1 TAKE OVER SOUTH AUSTRALIA Darren Weir Racing had a rewarding period over in Morphettville with the wrap up of the South Australian Racing Carnival. A select team of horses headed across the border each week to take part in the action and there was a lot to celebrate. It all started back on Saturday April 28th where we finished the day with Peaceful State and Leicester highlighting a treble when they both took out Black Type events. The next week, exciting filly Sopressa proved her dominant earlier win in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes was no fluke when again she outstayed her rivals to secure her and jockey Harry Coffey s maiden Group 1 win in the $500,000 Schweppes Oaks - an outstanding day for everyone involved! But the success didn t stop there! The following week it was the boys turn in the South Australian Derby and with three stable representatives in the race it was bound to be an exciting day. It was the favourite Leicester (pictured above) who continued on his winning ways and come away with his maiden Group 1 in the $600,000 feature, making it Darren's third South Australian Derby win in a row. Earlier in the day, the stable celebrated wins by Camdus, first-up after 10 months off the racing scene, and the impressive Peaceful State (picture below) again proved Continued INSIDE MAY ISSUE 1 Take Over South Australia 2 Welcome to the team Richard Cully 3 Iconoclasm All class on a rewarding Saturday! 4 Silentz is Golden! 5 When Harry Met Sopressa 6 Warrnambool Wrap Up 7 May Winners 8 Financial Matters
2 Continued too good when he made it back to back Listed victories in the $150,000 Adelaide Guineas. Welcome to the team Richard Cully The success continued for a fourth straight week with a further three runners saluting in Black Type events - the stable's third treble in four weeks! The honest Yogi (bottom picture) kicked off the day producing an effortless performance for his sixth career victory with an easy win in the Listed Port Adelaide Cup. Pleasuring was rewarded for her consistency with a welldeserved victory in the Group 3 South Australian Classic, before Land Of Plenty produced an outstanding turn of foot to take out his third race in just his first preparation with the stable to win the Group 3 R A Lee Stakes. It was a massive few weeks over in SA, and a huge congratulations must go to everyone who was involved in the success! Talented jumps jockey Richard Cully and his partner Lisa are the newest recruits to Darren Weir Racing. They ll become familiar faces helping with the pre-trainers at Darren s top stable beside Ballarat s grandstand. Here s a bit more about Richard... I was born in Sydney to Irish parents, and lived there until I was 15 when I relocated to Ireland with my family. I started riding over jumps as soon as I finished school. In 2005 I returned to Sydney and worked for Gai Waterhouse at Randwick before going to New Zealand to ride over jumps in I rode there for 2 seasons before returning to Ireland to train for 2 1/2 yrs, but then decided to go back to New Zealand in 2010 to ride over the jumps for a further 3 seasons. In 2012 I travelled with NZ trainer John Wheeler s jumps horses and had the opportunity to ride at Oakbank which prompted me to decide to move to Victoria the following year where I joined Ciaron Maher s team at Caulfield and also rode work for Paddy Payne. My biggest achievements in the saddle have been in winning 2 Grand Annual Steeplechases for Paddy Payne and 2 Grand Nationals on a horse called Wells, and I also won New Zealand s biggest steeplechase, the Great Northern Chase, on a horse called Jack Romanov. My partner Lisa and I have recently relocated to Burrumbeet, just outside of Ballarat, and we re looking forward to our new role with Darren Weir Racing.
3 Iconoclasm all class on a Rewarding Saturday! When Harry met Sopressa Iconoclasm continued his outstanding first campaign scoring his fifth win from just seven starts at Flemington. The promising colt made it three wins in a row when he took over at the 250m mark and broke clear to salute by 1.5 lengths in the Three-Year-Old Handicap over 1600m, in the process securing a Flemington double for the team after First Among Equals had earlier taken out the Listed The Straight Six in stylish fashion. A big congratulations to everyone involved! Silentz is Golden! On Sunday May 27 th at Geelong in Race 8 the Darren Weir team jumped out of their seats as Silentz took home the 400 th win for the season! Congratulations to everyone involved in this memorable moment! When Sopressa crossed the line first to win the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks over 2000m at Morphettville on May 5 th, it was a dream come true for her young jockey Harry Coffey. Of course, every jockey wants to win Group 1 s and as many races as they can, but for Harry this win had extra special meaning given what he has to go through each day just to be able to ride and stay healthy. You see, the affable 22-year-old from Swan Hill was born with the debilitating genetic disorder cystic fibrosis (CF). This means his body produces an abnormal amount of thick and sticky mucus which affects the proper functioning of his lungs, airways and digestive system, leaving him prone to breathing difficulties, recurrent infections, and problems with processing food. His daily routine is therefore a ritual of medications and treatments which includes tablets a day, consisting of antibiotics, vitamins and enzymes, as well as using a nebulizer, and puffers twice a day. Then there s the regular hospital visits each year which Harry likens to having a tune-up for his body to help ensure it s functioning as well as can be. There s currently no cure for CF, so for Harry it s just a matter of managing his condition as best he can for as long as he can. Despite all this, Harry s certainly not one to shirk hard work, whether that means going back to Swan Hill to ride for his father - trainer Austy Coffey, or turning up for jumpouts for Darren, or taking race rides wherever he is required. His positive attitude and determination has won him a legion of fans, especially amongst the CF community who, due to the nature of the disease, don t usually have too many sports people to look up to. Congratulations on your Group 1 success Harry. You certainly deserve it and let s hope there s many more in store for you. 4 Warrnambool Wrap up And just like that our countdowns were over... Tuesday May 1st had rolled around and we had a big team of horses ready to take on the famous Warrnambool May Racing Carnival. Instead of wind and rain, the sun shone down on the track as thousands of racegoers entered the gates for Day 1 of the three day carnival. The unusual May weather only added to our pleasure as the winners started rolling in, eventually finishing the day with a winning quartet - a brilliant way to start the carnival! Night Falls got the ball rolling when he broke his Maiden in strong style before Big Hammer broke through for the first time this preparation with a dominant performance in the Benchmark 78 Handicap over 2350m. After pleasing us with his first two Victorian starts, Tradesman showed class to prevail by three lengths and with a winning treble already, Jaws Of Steel topped off our day when he saluted in the final event. Following a night of celebrations in town we were quickly back at the course for Day 2 and it didn t take long before we had a win on the board with Truly High narrowly defeating his stablemate Champagne Friday in the first race. Big Bad Baz also got his Maiden victory on the board and before we knew it the feature event of the day had rolled around, the Listed $150,000 Wangoom Handicap. We had four runners lining up with all horses running fantastic - Handsome Thief finished on top, narrowly defeating his stablemate Stellar Collision with Ozi Choice and Ulmann kicking off their campaigns in great fashion, finishing fifth and sixth and both being beaten under 2 lengths. Lucky For All continued his great start to his Australian racing career making it back to back victories and securing our fourth win for the day - our eighth for the carnival. Under a ground saving ride from Dean Yendall he went on to salute by threequarters of a length. As Thursday came around, the weather had changed and, after a much needed coffee or two, we were ready to face the wind and rain and take on the final day. Thunder Cloud proved himself to be a good omen when he produced a big winning margin again and made it two from two this preparation. Exciting gelding Furrion continued his undefeated streak with yet another impressive victory in the Benchmark 70 Handicap, saluting by an easy 2.5 lengths. Darren had won the previous four editions of the Warrnambool Cup, and Gallic Chieftain (pictured) made history when he followed in the footsteps of Akzar, Tall Ship, Master of Arts and High Church by taking out our fifth Cup in a row - an amazing achievement on Darren s behalf. Under a nice ride from John Allen, he peeled out deep into the straight and ran down the leaders to narrowly salute over his fast finishing stablemate Yogi. Fifty Stars capped off a magnificent three days, impressing in the final race of the carnival to remain unbeaten. And with that the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival was all over again for another year. Thirty races stretched out over 3 consecutive days, and with a total of 12 winners - including the two feature flat races - it was another outstanding effort by Darren and all the team. A huge congratulations to everyone who enjoyed success with us!...now the countdown begins for the 2019 May Racing Carnival.
