4 After enjoying a little freshen up following his stint in Queensland for the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Voodoo Lad returned to the races and the winners stall on Saturday the 14th of July, producing a stunning last-to-first performance in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield. VOODOO LAD CLAIMS GROUP 3 With Brad Rawiller in the saddle, he was restrained to the tail of the field before peeling widest into the straight where he unleashed a powerful turn of foot to win by a length and a half over Inn Keeper and Jukebox. He showed his class in what was the eleventh win of his 27-start career and with a further nine placings to his name, he continues to prove himself as a terrific galloper. We finished Saturday s racing with a winning double after Mount Kilcoy took out the Ladbrokes Cash In Handicap over 2000m. Settling down just off midfield, he got a nice cart into the straight where he relished the rise in distance to win by an easy two lengths. The 3YO High Chapparal colt owned by Ian and Di McCauley has had a fantastic start to his career with two wins and three seconds from his 6 starts to date. FINALS DAY AT FLEMINGTON We had a successful Finals Day at Flemington on the 7th of July with the stable going home with a winning quartet including two Black Type races. The winning ways started with Sixties Groove who was very impressive stepping out to 2000m for the first time this preparation. After a string of pleasing performances he broke his Australian maiden in style, saluting by a comfortable three lengths in the $100,000 VRC-CRV Club Tour Trophy. ATB s Falago found his way back to the winners stall after twelve months when he proved victorious in the Banjo Patterson Series Final prevailing over stablemate Big Hammer, a quinella for the stable in the $120,000 event. It wasn t long before we had a winning treble for the day with the promising Nature Strip getting the job done down the straight in the Listed AR Creswick Final over 1200m. He had to do it the tough way, rolling forward to take up the lead and face the strong head-wind, but still managed to hold off his rivals and win by a length and a half. Waratah Thoroughbreds Camdus was our fourth and final winner for the day when he got his first stakes victory on the board, claiming the Listed Victorian Sprint Series Final.

5 MARCUS OLDHAM SCHOLARSHIP Darren Weir Racing are proud to be sponsoring a new undergraduate scholarship that will enable aspiring thoroughbred racing industry leaders the opportunity to study at Marcus Oldham College. Supporting a scholarship at Marcus Oldham is a good fit for us, it makes sense, said Weir. Over the years we have had several graduates work with us, and I have been impressed by their work ethic and the different skills they are able to contribute to our business. I m very excited to be able to give back to the industry and ensure that we encourage young people to pursue careers in the thoroughbred industry. Speaking from experience, it s hard work but a lot of fun. The $10,000 Darren Weir Scholarship is available to applicants enrolled or intending to enrol in Marcus Oldham s Diploma of Equine Management for the 2019 academic year. The applicant must be passionate about the thoroughbred racing industry, have a desire to further their learning and pursue a career in the industry. The Scholarship will provide financial support towards the tuition or residential fee and is available for the entirety of the one-year Diploma of Equine Management Program. There is also the opportunity to undertake the 8-week practical placement component of the course at Darren Weir Racing. Approximately 20% of students in their first year of study, across the three undergraduate courses at Marcus Oldham, are supported by the generosity of the sponsors and donors of the Marcus Oldham Scholarship and Bursary Program. The Darren Weir Racing Scholarship is a testament to our graduates success and an acknowledgement from Darren that our Equine Management curriculum is meeting and exceeding the benchmark set by the thoroughbred industry, said the Principal of Marcus Oldham, Dr Simon Livingstone. The Diploma of Equine Management is a year-long intensive course offered on campus at Marcus Oldham in Geelong, Victoria. A combination of lectures, local and international study tours, industry placement and hands-on practical experience has seen the College become Australia s leading educator in equine management. LIFE AFTER RACING DWR s Lee Purchase rehomes approximately 60 racehorses a year from our stable into equestrian or pleasure homes. This month we take a look at the striking Patanga Lodge Bentley, formerly known as Madica s Boy. He had a short racing career for the Porter & Pelchen families with only 8 starts but went on to find his niche for Sheridan Wilson in Eventing. Now an 8YO, he left the stable in 2016 and was purchased by Sheridan in April 2017 after a 12 month spell. He is now competing at 1* level in FEI eventing and successfully competed at the Melbourne International 3 Day Event this year. He tries his guts out for everything I ask of him! He is so trainable and an absolute pleasure to have around. Wouldn t give this boy up for the world!

6 TWO IN A ROW FOR SIXTIES GROOVE It was another great day out for Sixties Groove s connections at Flemington on Saturday the 23rd of July when he made it two in a row with yet another impressive performance. The Australian Bloodstock gelding saluted over 2000m with Damian Lane aboard in the $120,000 KA Morrison Handicap. The wins kept rolling into Sunday with two of our runners jumping into the winners stall in their hurdle assignments. It was Yu Long Investments 8YO gelding Killarney Kid who got our first win on the board as he lined up for his debut over the obstacles. Having trialled pleasingly over the hurdles in the past we went into the event hopeful of a strong showing and he certainly didn t let us down. As he peeled to the outside approaching the home turn and took over the lead, he made easy work of it to go on and win by a superb six lengths. Our second winner for the day came in the feature hurdle event, the $100,000 Brendan Drechsler Hurdle over 3600m where Bit Of A Lad continued his outstanding run over the obstacles and made it three in a row with yet another lengthy victory. The 4YO has shown a real knack for the caper this preparation having won three of his four tries over the sticks, but this was his most prestigious win to date. John Allen was in the saddle and he travelled strongly throughout the event, claiming victory by a massive eight lengths. Bit Of A Lad has tallied up a combined winning margin of over 33 lengths at his past three starts so we are very eager to see what he can produce next! We have some precocious fillies in the stable which look ready to hit the racetrack this season! 7 TRIPLE TREBLE SATURDAY It was the last Saturday of racing for the season and what a busy day we had. With runners saddled up at three venues across two different states, we finished the day with a total of nine winners. Mantastic was our first to get the job done at Caulfield and he did it in style. After finishing second in his first three Australian starts, the OTI import took out the Benchmark 78 Handicap over 1600m by a length. Zedinator had no trouble with the step up in class as he ran down the leaders to take out the $120,000 3YO Handicap before Snitzepeg showed a great turn of foot as he peeled four wide into the straight and went on to win by over two lengths. On the back of a double on Friday for Mildura Cup Day with Reward For Silence and Golden Song saluting, the success rolled into Day 2 of their Carnival where we ended up taking out a treble. Astrological and Savvy Star got the winning ways underway when they both claimed their maiden wins on the board in race one and two before Secret Reward took out the last race of the day - the 0-58 Handicap over 1400m. We also had a team head across the border at Morphettville where Red Choux s and Choisborder both proved too good in their races. The highlight of the day certainly came from star three year old Nature Strip who produced an astonishing performance to take his record to three from three since joining the Darren Weir stable. Although a touch slow to begin in the Listed $100,000 UBET Lightning Stakes he worked forward to settle outside the leader, Sunlight. As he approached the turn he was doing it easy and we watched in awe as he bounded clear upon straightening and went on to salute by almost six lengths.
