1 In October 2016 Darren obtained the final piece of his training puzzle when making the purchase of the 400 acre property Trevenson Park at Maldon. Darren s long-term vision for the property was to develop it into an Agistment and training complex, and slowly but surely this plan is coming to fruition. The property is not yet complete but it has come a long way in just over 12 short months. Recent upgrades and modifications have helped ensure Trevenson Park evolves from purely an Agistment property to Darren s latest registered training complex. Darren has had his maintenance crew hard at work building a training track, a pool, new fencing, paddock shelters, a second home on the property, and so much more. The property is nothing short of a Horse Haven, with paddocks of varying sizes, suitable to any horse with any need at any stage of their preparation. It can now accommodate spellers, rehabilitation needs, and horses in pre-training and full work. The recent installation of a deep sand track resembles the conditions found at the beach, so this gives Darren another dimension to his training. An uphill sand track extension is still under construction, but once this is complete Darren will have the ability to gallop horses up a 700m straight hill track at the property. To see a video of Darren explaining the property please visit: there you will find a link to Trevenson Park. Tosen Stardom has been a thrill for Darren to train and a dream come true for his fantastic group of owners. He is an extremely well bred horse with exceptional looks which resulted in his sale topping result as a yearling in Japan when selling for over three million Australian dollars. He is a very tough, sound horse who has an explosive turn of foot. He was able to show all his attributes in his last start in the 2017 G1 Emirates Stakes where he took the race out with a mind blowing win with Damian Lane aboard. After his Emirates Stakes win he headed to Millwater Farm for a well-deserved rest before recently coming back to the stable in preparation for a huge autumn campaign. Congratulations to his great group of owners who include, Australian Bloodstock, Doonaree Racing, Power Thoroughbreds, Get The Dukes Out Racing, T Shimakawa, K Yoshida, A Kheir, J Bromley, A Brogan, J Stumer, G Barnett, Mrs M Barnett, J Hunter, C Renshaw, T Ginnane, M Johnston & L McKenzie and we wish them all the best for Tosen Stardom s autumn campaign Tosen Stardom 7yo Stallion, Deep Impact x Admire Kirameki by End Sweep Breeder: Northern Farm Japan Sales: 2012 Select Yearling Sale Japan. 4 It all starts at the break of dawn while most of the world is still sleeping. Our dedicated crew of talented track work riders don their riding gear and head out in the early hours of the morning to put the Darren Weir racehorses through their paces. This is not a job for the faint-hearted, as it takes courage, bravery, patience and of course skill to sit atop half a tonne of racehorse. It also requires a lot of dedication and love for the horses - without these attributes it would be a near impossible task. The first lot of racehorses are saddled up and trotting out to the sand track by 5am each morning regardless of what the weather brings - rain, hail, heat or snow the horses and their riders are always on the go. This occurs 6 days per week for all 52 weeks of the year in order to get the horses race day ready. Darren writes the training program for each horse every day and it is then the rider s responsibility to follow these instructions. Sometimes this can be more challenging than at other times depending on the horse and the conditions! From the first lot of horses the riders know for the next 6 hours they will ride another 8-10 horses each, all at different stages of training, of various ages, and following different routines. Sometimes they may be working on their own, or with a partner, or even in a small group, all of which is determined by Darren s worklist. These riders need to be ready to handle horses with all sorts of personalities - strong, timid, playful, quirky, moody, cheeky, lazy and anything in between. The riders need to take the time to learn about each horse and to know if they have any particular issues which require their focus. Our track work riders are educators for the young horses and exercise riders for the older ones. The riders do the hard yards getting the horses fit, maintaining their condition, and keeping an eye on any changes which may occur. They help ensure the horses are all sound and feeling well. Occasionally a track work rider may suffer a tumble but they always do their best to get straight back up to try again. This crew works hard behind the scenes, they risk injury every day, and they are probably not recognised enough for their deeds. The jockeys, trainers, and strappers may get the glory on race day, but the contribution of the track work rider has been just as significant. Our appreciation for our team of dedicated track work riders is huge. Without them the horses could not perform on race day. A lot of blood, sweat and tears may be shed throughout a morning track work session, but at the end of the day, the riders must love what they do and have an unspoken bond with the racehorses.
5 As another year draws to an end we take the time to reflect on what s been an OUTSTANDING and RECORD BREAKING year full of plenty of highs and memorable moments. The year began with a bang when Unfurl got the job done in the annual $20,000 Burrumbeet Cup held on New Year s Day, our first of many country cups for We entered February with a huge 43 winners already on the board and headed down south for the Tasmanian Carnival. Parthesia flew the flag high after taking out the Listed Tasmanian Oaks at Launceston before Big Duke continued on with his unbelievable first Australian campaign saluting in the Group 3 $200,000 Launceston Cup three days later. We knew he was the real deal back then and he definitely didn t disappoint. As we raised the bar at each of his runs in both campaigns he continued to perform, before running out of his skin when he produced that exciting fourth placing in the $6 million Emirates Melbourne Cup an amazing thrill for his big group of owners! Black Heart Bart had a fantastic start to his 2017 going back-to-back at Group One Level saluting in the $500,000 C.F. Orr Stakes before returning to Caulfield two weeks later and proving just too good again in the $500,000 Futurity Stakes. Whilst Bart was notching his fifth career Group 1 win, Renew was breaking droughts of a different kind 816 nonwinning day droughts. Having not made it to the winner s stall for almost two and a half years the OTI gelding finally saluted at Morphettville on February 11 th before going on to have a very successful campaign over the obstacles. He won four of his five hurdle starts with a combined winning margin of almost thirty lengths and adding over a further $200,000 to his prizemoney tally. Not bad for his first jumping campaign! Humidor sure made his presence felt this year at his second preparation in Australia. He won his first Group 1 with an impressive performance in the $1.5 million Australian Cup in March, and after a well-deserved break he got his second Group 1 win on the board in the Makybe Diva Stakes during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Despite these victories he will probably be best remembered for his heart-in-the-mouth effort in the $3 million Cox Plate when he came oh so close to causing racing s biggest upset by chasing down the mighty mare Winx to within a neck in that epic battle down the Moonee Valley straight. We certainly had an eventful and highly successful Spring Carnival on top of this with some of the other highlights being Gailo Chop s almighty effort in the $1 million Caulfield Stakes on Guineas Day, making his way back to Group 1 glory and leaving the memories of an almost career ending injury in the past. Tosen Stardom taking out the Group 1 Toorak Handicap before ending the carnival with a jaw dropping victory in the $2 million Emirates Stakes on the final day at Flemington. Lucky Hussler s dominating three length victory in the Group 2 Crystal Mile. Snitzepeg going back-to-back at Listed Level, whilst Savaheat broke his maiden at Black Type level making it a great three weeks for owner Peter and Winnie Law. Having three representatives in the $6 million Melbourne Cup. Another Coldie winning his sixth race for the year when he saluted over his stablemate Night s Watch in the $200,000 Country Cup Final at Flemington on Oaks Day. Winning a race on every day of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
6 Burning Front became a million dollar man in April when his seventeenth career win in the Vobis Gold Mile at Caulfield saw his prizemoney break the $1 million mark! Quick enough the 2017 Warrnambool May Racing Carnival was upon us and as always was a highlight of the year. There were winners a plenty over the three days for the Darren Weir Racing team. Fourteen runners returned home victors with three of them taking out feature races Renew in the $125,000 Galleywood Hurdle, Ulmann in the Listed $150,000 Wangoom Handicap, before High Church followed in the footsteps of Akzar, Tall Ship and Master of Arts when he took out our fourth Warrnambool Cup in a row! We waved goodbye to two of our stable favourites as they entered their stud careers. Two-time Group 1 winner Palentino departed the stable after a stellar racing career that earned his owners over $1.3 million. Stratum Star was another who wasn t unfamiliar with Group 1 glory. His career spanned over 38 starts and just months before his retirement he made it three wins in a row in three different states saluting in Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria all just a month apart from each other. He earned over $2.4 million in prizemoney.. what a warrior! With the ending of the 2016/17 season in July, Darren smashed his own record from the previous year by a huge 101 wins. After 2686 starters we finished with 449 winners, 355 seconds and 324 thirds an almighty achievement which couldn t be done without our amazing staff. Speaking of staff, they too were earning themselves accolades at the third annual presentation of the Australian Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards. From twelve possible finalists across six categories, our Racing Manager Jeremy Rogers and Stable Foreman Angela Taylor-Moy were finalists in the Dedication to Racing Award, whilst Lee Purchase was again a finalist in the Thoroughbred Care and Welfare Award. Not only is it an amazing achievement to even be nominated for these awards, but Jeremy went on to win the Dedication to Racing Award as well as the overall Thoroughbred Excellence Award chosen from the other category winners. We ve had plenty of success throughout the year on and off the track and after Stellar Collision delivered us a late Christmas present with his victory in the Listed $120,000 Christmas Stakes at Caulfield on Tuesday (Boxing Day) we hope the success and winners can continue on well into 2018! From everyone at Darren Weir Racing we wish you a happy, safe and successful New Year!
