4 TWC Star Stable Spring Competition Employee of the Month (Karaka) JULY NOMINEES Yearling Rocky Martin For showing continued commitment and enthusiasm in his role. Breeding/Stallion Maintenance Tana Shaw Martin Joslin For ensuring that the Foaling Unit was fully stocked prior to foaling starting. Worked really hard during July and gave a lot of support to Barry Bovill. Office Katie Seddon Has made an excellent start in her role at Westbury Stud. Katie developed a robust budget and has shown that she has excellent graphic designs skills. AUGUST NOMINEES Yearling Lee Favell Has settled into his role really well and has worked hard improving the quality of the sand yards Breeding/Stallion Maintenance Bubacarr Barry Robyn Mackwood- Smith/Martin Joslin Has fitted in really well. Is very good with the stallions, is a hard worker and always has a smile on his face. Both Robyn and Marty stepped up while Barry Bovill was on leave. 5 Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes Second in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup to Terravista Third place in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes to Gordon Lord Byron & Speediness The 2012 Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes saw Sacred Falls take the win, scoring by a length and stamping him as a class act. An O Reilly colt out of Iguazu s Girl (Redoute s Choice), Sacred Falls has gone on to achieve multiple Group 1 successes, taking out the Group 1 New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas in his three-year-old season, and scoring back to back Group 1 Doncaster Handicap wins in 2013 & 2014, Saturday 13 September 2014 sees the running of the Listed Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes at Ruakaka. The Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes has become a major attraction for the country s leading three-year-olds in recent years with high class horses Sacred Falls and El Roca the most recent winners to kick off their spring campaigns at three. Originally run as a two-year-old feature in July, the Whangarei Racing Club chose to reposition the race by two months taking it to a spring 3YO feature which has seen the race gain prominence as a preferred target for the quality 3YO s looking to begin their new season. The 2013 edition of the Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes was taken out by Westbury graduate El Roca (pictured) in the hands of jockey Mark Du Plessis, for trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young of Cambridge. The son of Fastnet Rock, from the Rubiton mare Rubimill, El Roca has since raced with distinction against the very best of his age in Australia, earning more than A$410,000 in stakes to date with high class performances including; Winning the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes and defeating dual Group 1 winner Dissident Second in the Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas to Dissident & defeating Eurozone Second in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude to Éclair Big Bang & defeating Long John In addition to his Group 1 victories, Sacred Falls posted wins in the Group 2 Hawke s Bay Guineas and the Group 3 Waikato RC James & Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes. Scared Falls has also been placed in Group 1 Rosehill Guineas, Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Group 2 Schweppes Crystal Mile saw Antonio Lombardo (Pins x Petit Verdot) putting in an outstanding performance to claim his third stakes victory by 5½ lengths. Antonio Lombardo then went on to claim victory in the Group 2 Hawke s Bay Guineas and Group 3 Waikato RC James & Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes, and placings in the Group 1 Levin Classic and Group 3 Hawke s Bay Traderacks Stakes.

6 Breeding Report This weekend Westbury graduate Tiger Moss (Mossman x Just Platonic), now a five-year-old mare, is entered at Ellerslie in Race 2 - the Rating 85 over 1200m and she should be very competitive. Trained by Lance O Sullivan and Andrew Scott from their Matamata stable, Tiger Moss was an impressive last start winner on a heavy track at Pukekohe. This was the mares fourth win from only eleven starts, and with rain expected this weekend, she has winning form on a testing track, and has also been an Ellerslie winner at only her second start. Part owned by New Zealand identities Sir Colin (Pinetree) and Lady Meads, Tiger Moss was a $220,00 purchase at the 2011 NZB Select sale by Wexford Stables. Just Platonic (Danehill Dancer) and her half sister Lucastrine (Encosta de Lago) were two of the original mares sent here to Westbury by Gerry Harvey soon after he purchased the property in From Sales Manager Gareth Smith Pictured: Tiger Moss as a yearling Photo Credit: Lesley Warwick One of the most satisfying things I enjoy in my job as Sales Manager for Westbury Stud is following the racing progress of the yearlings we sell at the sales. Seeing them win a race is very satisfying and celebrating the win with the racing owners is a great thrill. At a post race celebration with excited owners I am often asked to recall something about the young horse while it was being raised at Westbury. Both mares are out of the Kiwi bred race mare It s Platonic (Trustful), a classy mare trained by Matamata trainer Graham Richardson that was good enough to win 10 races, including 5 in a row and over $500,000 in stakes. It s Platonic s wins included two listed races in Melbourne and a 3rd placing in the G2 Sunline Stakes at Moonee Valley. She was purchased by Gerry at the end of her racing career. Tiger Moss has a Cecconi half brother racing in Singapore out of the Bruce Marsh stable that was a $85000 Ready To Run purchase. This year we sold a half sister by Westbury Stud stallion Swiss Ace to David Ellis s Te Akau Racing. Lets hope we are celebrating another race win on Saturday by this talented Westbury graduate. Without hesitation I can recall the months of education and care our dedicated and skilled staff have put into the rearing of the horse that has just rewarded its owners with the ultimate thrill - a race win.
