Letter from the editor Sue Thurlow I am trying to get each newsletter out near the beginning of each month, but this is an extra early edition as I need to go away immediately after the Fraser Coast All Breeds Show which is this weekend a very big show in the Covered Arena at the Maryborough Showgrounds Saturday - Led and Ridden Breed classes Saturday Evening - Freestyles to music and ridden Challenge classes Sunday Led and Ridden Show Horse and Hunter classes There have been record entries and we are expecting some very high quality horses (and riders!) Also in the July newsletter Some photos from the 24 th June Dressage Training event Carl Hecter s tips for improving your Dressage Guidelines for etiquette in the warm up area And much more. 4 24 th June Dressage Training Day There were a good number participating, mostly in Prep and Prelim, but with some Elementary and Medium entrants. Thank you to the judge, Sue Dale, who is not only an experienced judge, but she has trained her own horses to compete successfully at the Advanced level, so she was able to give well qualified (and sympathetic) feedback to the riders. It was lovely to see Anna Szyszka competing for the first time with Dergharty (aka Daz). Although her main aim was for a quiet and positive experience, they scored above 60% in both Prep tests. Donna Woodward and War Song (aka Sorrento) did well for a 1 st and 2 nd in the Preps with 66% and 66.75% at only their second training competition outing. 4
Kay Bradford and Maggie showing nice form in their Prep Monique Bonus has Mahaaro Shotgun nicely round and soft and forward in their Prep too Madison Hose and Pirate scored Petrea Bates and Land Grant look good at halt and % in Novice centre line in their Prelims for % and % Horse Rug Repairs Pick Up and Delivery by arrangement Prompt Reliable Service - Same Day Service by arrangement Phone Petrea Bates or Always leave a message and I will return your call 5
Pam Ward and Tuscan Shadow have a good effort in their Elementary Lynne Larkin with Law and Order achieved % and70.135% in their Mediums! The program for the Fraser Coast Dressage Championship 11 th & 12 th August is on the MARC website and nominations are open through Volunteers are still needed to assist with erecting arenas, pencilling, scoring, collecting test sheets, etc. Volunteering 3 hours or more will get automatic entry in the draw for $50. We know that most volunteers would do so anyway, but there is also a chance for financial reward to the workers. Contact Lynne Larkin larkin26@bigpond.com or Other inspirations for Dressage Aspirants / Addicts Carl Hester will be hosting a Through the Levels Masterclass on Sunday 22 nd July 2018 at the Qld State Equestrian Centre (QSEC) at Caboolture. This will follow the 2018 Brisbane CDI which will be from 18 th -21 st July at QSEC. Carl will also commentate the Young Horse Education session on Saturday afternoon, 21 st July, at the CDI 6
Some Tips from Carl Hester Even if you can t get to see Carl Hester at Caboolture on 22 nd July, you might benefit from these tips which he shared at a packed British Dressage national convention in It may be 6 years later, but they are still relevant!! Whether you are just starting out in dressage, want to improve your dressage for eventing, or are an experienced dressage competitor, Carl Hester s clear and easy to understand advice includes useful tips to help every rider improve their horse s way of going. Warming up Obedience to the hand and leg must start in the warm-up If a horse won t stretch at the beginning of session, work on a contact at first and then stretch when he is ready You should ride about 200 transitions per session forward & back to make the horse rideable & on the aids Straightness Riders blame saddles when the problem is usually that the horse isn t straight and throws them off to side. If horse isn t even in both reins don t keep pulling the heavy one work to put the weight in the empty rein If horse is stiff on outside rein, use renvers to soften them up and add weight to other rein. Everybody should have to ride quarter lines they show if the horse is contained in the outside aids. Improving paces The only way to improve/influence horses paces is to ride forward in a balanced way. The trot is the easiest pace to change & improve but you need to buy a good walk and a good canter Use half transitions to bring a horse back in trot and teach him to wait in balance rather than full half-halt Use lots of forwards and back transitions within the canter to spice up the hindleg Half-halts are invisible or should be that s why they re so hard to explain. It s what works for you. Strong/tense horses If horse is strong, don t go in straight lines, circle & circle until he s not pulling & is balancing himself A tense horse s lateral suppleness can be improved by very forward canter leg yields. Other useful tips For lateral work always remember to sit on your inside seatbone. Horses in self-carriage will get tired especially if not used to holding themselves so intersperse with stretching If you carry a whip just to make your horse go, you shouldn t carry one. They are just for small corrections. It doesn t matter what type of horse you have, you can teach it square halts they re free marks. 7
Click on the links to see videos of Sonke Rothenburger and Cosmo just beautiful!! 82.82%!! Those soft attentive ears with the relaxed swinging tail. Laura Graves and Verdades at the World Cup finals not too bad either! And for us mere mortals, here are some reminders about etiquette in the warm up arena As there can be many horses warming up in a restricted area it is important for all riders to be aware of the etiquette of riding in a group which improves the safety &harmony for all! Safety is paramount and a collision should be avoided at all times Mounting, dismounting, and adjustment of gear should not be done on the track or in the midst of a busy warm up area Consider the behaviour of other horses that may upset your horse (and try to keep clear of them) Riders SHOULD pass Left shoulder to Left shoulder when on the track, and when not on the track riders should give way to horses on the Left. (However not all riders may realise this, so if in doubt, call out to advancing rider keeping Left to Left or I am on inside / outside to help avoid collision / confusion). Passing Left to Left and Giving way to the Left is the opposite of how we drive in Australia so just imagine you are driving in Germany or USA The more progressive pace has priority on the track o Halt should not be on the track o Walk should not be on the track and never has right of way o Trot has priority over walk o Canter has priority over trot Lateral work has priority over all paces (but again common sense indicates if I was practising leg-yield in trot, and another rider is doing sequence flying changes towards me, I would give way to the more advanced / difficult movement) When circling, anticipate your return to the track so as not to stop the flow of others LOOK UP ahead and around you (not at your horse s neck/withers) so that you are aware of what is happening around you If your horse misbehaves, DO NOT shout at it, as that can frighten other horses and cause an accident for someone else But it is OK to use your voice (politely) if unsure what another rider is going to do or to warn them of your approach ( I will go on the inside, I am coming up behind you ). It may be courteous or necessary to leave the area if your horse is causing considerable upset to others 8
