5 March, 2017 Precision Rifleman 5 New NBRSA Club: Tehama Shooters Association by Richard Heinsohn The Tehama Shooters Association, also known as TSA, is a private membership club of over 500 active members and their guests. It was formed with just a handful of members 32 years ago in The shooting range expanded in 1992 and relocated to its present location at Manton Road (County Road A6) on the Long Ranch property approximately sixteen miles from the City of Red Bluff in Northern California. A short drive from beautiful Lassen Volcanic National Park. The range can be found using GPS coordinates of N, W. The following is a brief excerpt from the By Laws of our club and what the club represents:...the founding of the club is based on the encouragement of organized rifle, shotgun, and pistol shooting among citizens of the United States resident in our community, with the view toward better knowledge of the part of such citizens of the safe handling and proper care of firearms, as well as improve marksmanship. It shall be our further object and purpose to forward the development of those characteristics of honesty, good-fellowship, self-discipline, team-play and selfreliance which are the essentials of good sportsmanship and the foundation of true patriotism. One of several reasons for the club's existence is promoting youth shooting sports programs such as 4-H shooting Sports, Young Marines shooting programs, Trap & Skeet for our young people and much more. The TSA range is chartered by NRA and is affiliated with the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA), and the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). The club holds many scheduled events throughout each year, many of which are open to public. Some matches the club hosts include American Rimfire Association (ARA) benchrest, Pistol and Tactical Rifle competition, long range 600 & 1,000 yd benchrest, short range benchrest, Trap & Skeet, and Service Rifle competition. A schedule of events can be found on the club's website. Members of the board continue developing long term plans to make TSA range a premiere shooting range in Northern California and a place for shooters to come and participate in a gun friendly environment unlike that of many other ranges that are being threatened or pressured by growth from surrounding communities. Some of our long-term plans approved thus far include holding our club's first inaugural sanctioned 600 yard NBRSA benchrest competition. Check your NBRSA schedule. This event will be held in addition to our regular monthly 600 & 1,000- yard club matches. Another project approved includes construction of a new pistol bay area planned for competition or general shooting by members and their guests. Scheduling the NBRSA 600 yard match was two years in the making spear-headed by Richard Heinsohn, a fellow NBRSA competitor and club secretary of Tehama Shooters Association. With fellow long range shooters working with our club's board of directors and NBRSA regional directors, we have been successful on securing the date for the match to be added to the NBRSA schedule of events for the 2017 shooting season. In the near future, we will be looking at

6 6 Precision Rifleman adding our 1,000-yard competition to the schedule as well. This would give the members of the long range shooting community another place to further develop their skills and make new friends. The firing line is contained under a nice covered area out of the sun at an elevation of 822 feet above sea level. The 600-yard berm is slightly higher at 826 feet above sea level. The berm does not contain pits for target pulling. Rather we use clay birds and steel plates for shooters to sight-in to see their impacts. The club will be adhering to the NBRSA official rules for 600 and 1,000 yard Competition (rev 2) Section I identified as 1,000 and 600 Yard Benchrest Ranges without Pits. Using this method of sighters has served this club very well for many years. The course of fire remains the same per the rules. The surrounding area has much to offer those who would like to bring spouses or significant others. The City of Red Bluff has many fine hotels and dining establishments for everyone s taste in food and entertainment. If you want more of the city style of life there is Redding, CA a short drive north where you can find anything a big city has to offer. Both Red Bluff and Redding are premiere vacation places to visit if you want to stay awhile. If you re into fly-fishing, you are at the right location as some of the best steelhead, trout, and salmon fisheries in the world are here. A6) Red Bluff, CA GPS: N, W Arizona Benchrest Shooters Unlimited 5-Shot Invitational December 3-4, 2016 The 2016 Unlimited 5-Shot Invitational began in Visalia, CA in November and ended in Phoenix, AZ with the AZBRS Unlimited 5-Shot Invitational match on December 3-4, These two matches combined to create a 1-Gun Grand Agg between both clubs. In total we had 32 shooters out this weekend and some pretty challenging conditions. Practice started off with great weather and wind conditions for this time of year. Shooters were able to get their loads tuned and have a very relaxing two practice days. Unfortunately, nothing good ever lasts forever. As we moved into the weekend the wind picked up drastically. Saturday morning the AZBRS crew arrived to find the wind had picked up quite a bit. Gusts were constant throughout the morning, and before long one of the toughest issues we have ever had to deal with came up. Our metal target frames are put into concrete foundations. The wind was so strong that it pulled the frames straight out of the ground, concrete included! That s right. The concrete was pulled up out of the ground. Luckily we were prepared and quickly switched which benches we were shooting on this weekend and this didn t end up delaying our day at all. The wind continued throughout the morning, causing quite a few shooters to back out due to conditions. As the wind calmed down in the afternoon, most of these shooters rejoined us. While conditions were challenging, we still saw some amazing groups considering. In the afternoon, one of our local junior shooters, Tony DeBac-

7 March, 2017 Precision Rifleman 7 co, led the way with a.108 group straight out of match 1. He ended with a agg for the afternoon matches, putting him in first place for that agg. Sunday s wind was much better than Saturday. The 200 yard matches went by fast and before we knew it the day was over. In the end, Jack Childers took first place with a agg, followed by Joe Stanovich with a agg and Bud Mundy with a agg. When you combine these results with the Visalia match, Gary Ocock finished on top with a grand agg, followed by Jack Childers and Joe Stanovich s grand agg. We would like to thank everyone for coming out this weekend and sticking through the windy mornings. We hope to see you on January 7-8, 2107 for our 2017 SP-Unl5 AZ State Championship match. 11 Northern Colorado Score Match Augyst 6-7, 2016 by LuAnn Dill Howdy all! Wile E Coyote reporting from Northern Colorado Benchrest Shooters. On August 6-7 we held a Varmint for Score match. We had gorgeous weather for a busy weekend of shooting. Unfortunately this coyote was not present for this shoot, she was out sick. Saturday s 1st place 100yrd winner was Tom Evans with a x. Tom also claimed the high X- Count. Great shooting Tom! Saturday s 200yrd 1st place win went to Tom again with a score of x and the high X-Count. Tom was on a roll! Sunday s 100yrd 1st place winner was Ron Powell with a score of x. Ron also won the X-Count with 21x. Excellent shooting Ron! Sunday s 200yrd winner was Ron as well with a score of x. Again Ron won the high X-count! Hot dog Ron! Saturday s Grand Agg of score of x belonged to Tom Evans. Sunday s Grand Agg score of x was held by Ron Powell. The big winner of Saturday and Sunday s Aggs went to Tom Evans with his outstanding score of x! Superior shooting Tom! Even wearing proper ear protection, we wanted to hold our hands over our ear protectors to try to ward off the ear splitting roar of the Weatherby that was shooting in our midst. Jim Schmidt from Arizona Ammunition wanted to test out that cannon at 1,000 yards, so he was having one of our top shooters, Ross Herrick, putting it through it's paces, spitting out a 130 grain.30 caliber bullet at just over 4,000 feet per second. In addition to the thunder, it was a bit amusing watching the ball of fire coming off the muzzle, even in broad daylight, and seeing the stock jump completely out of the front rest with each shot. Although he didn't place in the top five, Ross put in respectable scores and groups considering that this is a hunting rifle and not a bench rest gun. We had a big crowd that showed up for the November Sahuaro match, so lots of people got to be entertained by the fireworks from Jim's big gun. The conditions did their usual skulduggery to sabotage our shooting, but in spite of that, there were six sub-moa aggregates in the Light Gun class, and we had thirteen sub-moa groups. John Benz shot a 4.56'' group and didn't even win for small group! Bill Warner was back with us and he was the only one to shoot three very nice sub- MOA groups for a 7.23'' aggregate, and he didn't take first either. It was Wayne McDonald's 4.37'' group, along with a 5.25'' (his 10.43'' didn't hurt him much) ended up with him getting a 6.69'' aggregate to win for Group Aggregate and smallest group as well. Bill Warner

13 was second and John Benz's 7.60'' agg. came in third. But in score it was a different story. It was John that kept all of his groups well centered to take tops in score with a 130. Mike Billotte, battling the switchy, 15+ MPH afternoon winds (and the thunderstorm a couple of benches over) was second with a 127-1X. Dale Arenson, also in relay 3, was third with a 125-2X. High single target score was Bill Warner, who's 6.87'' group was mostly in the ten ring for a 49. John kept it up in Heavy Gun and turned it into the John Benz show. Although we had seven sub-moa groups in heavy, John turned in the only sub-moa agg of all of us, winning handily with a 9.10'' group aggregate, with him also taking small group with a 6.62'' ten shot group. Mike Billotte did some excellent shooting in the tough conditions of relay 4 to come in second with a 10.87" agg. Dale Arenson's 11.25" was third. It was the same in score, John stayed in the center of the target and kept all three of his scores in the 90's, which is hard to do, (ask me how I know). John had a 96, a 94 and a 92 for a total of 282-5X and also took high single target score with a 96-3X. Steve Everson must have shot between the wind gusts in relay 4 to take second in heavy score with a respectable 254-1X, and Jerry Reisdorff's 239-3X was third. So there you have it, out of the eight trophies, John Benz walked away with five of them. Wayne Mc- Donald had two, and Bill Warner, despite a long absence, got the other one. At 11:38 A.M. we were already finished, with targets and supplies put away, trophies awarded, and heading just down the road to Cindy Lou's for our required hot lunch, cold drinks and a chance to hang out and talk, but we were disappointed to find out that this would be our last time. Cindy Lou's would be closing before the next match. Actually they will be reopening in Elfrida, Arizona, just a bit east of Tombstone, two hours and 125 miles to the southeast. Kinda out of the way for most of us on our way home. So now we will have to find a new March, 2017 Precision Rifleman 13 place to hang out after our matches. The local bar is out since most of us have a fairly long drive. And eating hot dogs at the gas/station convenience store is a bit short on atmosphere. But we'll come up with something, since getting together once a month and seeing each other is a big part of the fun, and one of

This is a four day shooting extravaganza. Jeff Summers began by winning the Unlimited and Light Varmint Grands. Tim Singleton won the Sporter Grand and Steve Lee won the Heavy Varmint Grand, Two and Three Gun. With all four aggs combined, Jeff Summers won the Four Gun. After the conclusion of the match, points were totaled to determine the Southeast Region Shooter of the year. 22 22 Precision Rifleman Holton Gun Club s Eastern Regional September 5-7, 2016 by Connie Wyant Shooters began arriving on Wednesday the 2nd, giving them lots of time to practice. As more arrived towards Friday, there was a hamburger meal waiting for them. Saturday morning 35 competitors were at the line ready to out do each other. The weather was beautiful all weekend, with Saturday night a steak supper waiting for them. Sunday evening s meal was beef tip and noodles and the Light and Heavy Varmint trophies were awarded. North Central Shooter of the Year NBRSA North Central Region Director Terry Meyer and Dave Brooks have joined forces to name a North Central Region Shooter of the Year for This is an NBRSA-sponsored event. Shooters must live in the North Central Region to be eligible for the award. Points will be awarded to shooters competing in five North Central Region matches during the 2017 season. The top 10 shooters at each of the scheduled matches will be awarded points to determine the Shooter of the Year. The first place finisher at each of the five matches will earn 10 points, with the 10th place finisher earning one (1) point. The qualifying matches are as follows: April 29: Oak Hills, Lt Varmint June 17-18: Minnetonka, Lt Varmint July 1-2: Prairie Dog Target Club HV 100, 200, 300-yard aggregate July 22-23: Webster City, Lt Varmint All qualifying dates are one gun only, yard aggregate except for Prairie Dog.
