1 Class Spotlight: Aviation Class by Taylor Reis The definition of aviation is the operation of an aircraft. Although the Seniors in the aviation class are not actually flying the real plane yet, they are getting a chance to learn how to fly. The Seniors in the aviation class include Jesse Schwab, Jordan Voller, Cole Nieuwsma, and Kyle Roth. They all really like the class is what the kids said. ELECTRONIC PRESENTATIONS CLASS THE CLIPPER The flight simulator costs on average of about two thousand five hundred dollars. That may sound expensive, but compared to other flight simulators that can get as high as forty-thousand dollars! 2 NORTH DAKOTA HUNTING H unting has been around for thousands of years it has already not only became a way of survival but even a sport. Hunting season is many things, for some it is there favorite time of the year, and for others it is just a nuisance. There are more accidents involving deer, during hunting season then any other season. Many people from other places come from a far distance just to participate in Strasburg hunting. I ve found many reasons why people love coming to Strasburg to hunt and not staying at there own towns. People love coming to Strasburg cause of the friendly people and all the good land for them to hunt on. Many people have family here and they join them for hunting. In the past years you have seen numerous amount of hunters out in Strasburg but this year the numbers have dropped abundantly In North Dakota there are many different types of species to hunt such as Big Game which includes deer, pronghorn, moose, elk, and bighorn sheep hunting. Water Fowl witch includes geese, duck, and swan hunting. Upland Game which include crow, dove, grouse, partridge, pheasant, sand hill crane, snipe, woodcock, wild turkey, and tree squirrel hunting. There is also Furbearers which include coyote, fox, and mountain lion hunting. Lots of people in Strasburg also love participating in winter hunting like trapping species such as muskrats, beavers, many North Dakotans also go ice fishing witch which people love to do in the little town of Strasburg. By Scotti Scherr There are many things to hunt in North Dakota but the major ones in Strasburg are, Deer, pheasant and coyote. Deer which has three different opening dates the first opening is for archery hunting which opens on August 31, January 6, Then there is the main rifle hunting for deer which opens on November 9 to the 25. The last season that opens for deer is muzzleloaders which opens on November 30 through December 16. Pheasant season is the most famous to Strasburg and it brings the most people to the small town, they come form afar some even from out of state come to hunt pheasants in Strasburg. Most people of Strasburg love to shoot coyotes which is all season lone, they especially hunt coyotes in the winter when there fur is prime and can make up to around thirty dollars a coyote. There are so many more things to do in North Dakota for hunting and other actives that you can participate in, in Strasburg. Fun Fact: ND issues more then 90,000 deer licenses each year since 2008 for bow and rifle hunting, the number of issued licenses has dropped more then 40% in 2012.
3 Clipper Football Coach: Robert Bubach Though this year was not a great one for the Strasburg-Zeeland Clippers, Coach Robert Bubach held our team together through the rough season of eight losses and one win. Robert s strong motivational speeches and his intense conditioning kept this team moving forward every time they were all together. Robert Bubach is by far the most intense football coach this school has ever seen and is a man with love for the game itself along with his players. Although the Strasburg-Zeeland football team may not be the best when it comes to the scoreboard, as far as sportsmanship and respect goes they are an outstanding team. 4 The Strasburg-Zeeland Clipper s 2012 volleyball team came into this season with a bang with three wins in a row. All with the score of 3-0! Losing only six out of the seventeen games they played this year and it s not over yet. Still to be played are the regionals in Lamoure on November 5th-7th and the state tournament in Minot November 15th- 17th. Their coach, Joann Ternes, has been providing the organization and encouragement that these young female athletes need to go all the way to the state championship as well as just making it through the next grueling practice. Joann, as well as all of the girls on the S-Z volleyball team, understands that to be the best you must dedicate very much of your energy and heart to this team. From what I understand, being on this team is not just being on a team, it s a lifestyle choice. PINK OUT By Eric Schall Number 14 Drew Ellingson in Eureka. 5 C lose is a great organization. Close Up s first program year is a small but successful one. The Washington High School Program begins with 554 students from Oklahoma, Texas and Florida. As close up went on, it kept expanding and more people joined the group.. Steve Janger founded the Close Up Foundation in While there were other programs available at the time that catered solely to high-achieving students, he understood the need to involve all students in the democratic process through current issue debates, collaborative learning, and the development of citizenship skills. For over 41 years, Close Up has strived to fulfill that mission and the goals of its founder by inspiring, empowering, and engaging young people and educators from across the United States and the world. O n 2013, the close up group which include the juniors and seniors of Strasburg High School, will be leaving on March 17, 2013 and come back on March 23, The kids have to get up very early and head to Bismarck. From Bismarck they go on a plane and head to Washington DC for the fun to begin. Six days later, after they are all done learning and exploring Washington, the group will return to their homes. D uring the seven day period at Washington D.C., they will be shown the white house. Students will also be taken to several museums. Students also have one independent day during which small groups can visit points of interest of their choice, including college campuses and dozens of museums. They will be staying at a hotel that is very secured. No one is allowed to leave account of getting lost or serious injury. If the close up group of Strasburg were to raise enough money, they could go to New York. Y et Close up is expensive, it is worth it after two years of raising money. The advisor and chaperone of the Strasburg close up group is Brain and Nicole Grove. We do several activities to raise enough money to go on this great trip. At least 50,000 dollars has to be raise in order to go to Washington DC. That is not including New York. Some of the fund raisers done by the close up group are raking leaves, working at weddings, selling food on special events, and working concessions at the sporting events. There are little odds and ends where we help people out, whatever it takes to raise the money. By Cody Wald
6 POD Presidential Election By Jennifer Schneider The Strasburg High School Seniors running for President in the Strasburg High School Presidential Election are Emme Hulm and Holly Krumm as her Vice President, Kyle Nieuwsma and Mason Kramer as his Vice President, Matthew Schaefbauer and Jennifer Wickenheiser as his Vice President, Kyle Roth and Cole Nieuwsma as his Vice President, and Jon Stabler and Jordan Voller as his Vice President. The election will be held Monday, November 5 at Strasburg Public High School. Each person was asked what their plans are if they become president. These were their replies: Emme Hulm- If I am fortunate enough to be elected president by my friends and family at Strasburg Public School, I will personally see to it that Strasburg kids are full, have fun, and excited about being at school with their friends. Thankyou for your consideration and for making my time at Strasburg High amazing! Vote for Emme Kyle Nieuwsma Good food. The students need better food and more to be healthier. Matthew Schaefbauer- The first thing I will do when I become president, is limit and regulate government programs. There are way to many people who are dependent on government o programs that do not need them. America needs some tough love to help encourage people to get back to work again and stop being so dependent on government programs. This does not mean that we completely get rid of government programs, it only means that we need to get stricter rules for these programs. Jon Stabler- My plans are to give more freedom to the students by letting them have Gatorade and juice in class. I also want to improve our lunch problem, by getting the cooks to make more, and better meals. Kyle Roth- If I become president I will make education a number one priority, and in order for students to learn they need FOOD. I will get rid of the current lunch plan and make sure kids get to eat meat again. Serving sizes will also be increased as most kids are athletes and need lots of energy to perform well. China and many other countries have passed America. They have better technology to solve the world problems. If I become president, America will be the leader once again. The second thing I will do if I become president is invest in the nation s resources. The Bakken reserve has enough oil to supply the whole nation s demand for many years. Lets use this precious resource instead of buying from foreign countries. If I become president, I will put in place an effective farm bill that will help out the small farmer, and not the big corporations. Also, welfare and many other subjects not related to agriculture will not be included in the farm bill. If I become president, I will make government local. No national healthcare plan and no federal interruption with the states. The states know best how to govern their people. Lastly, I will protect religious liberty. I will not allow the government to interfere with the church. One last thing I won t do, I will not remove God from out coins or the Constitution of the United States of America. 7 Trick Or Treat Halloween has been around since ancient Ireland. Now almost everyone celebrates it. Trick or Treating doesn't just happen in the U.S. It also occurs in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, parts of Saudi Arabia, and most of Europe. Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause bad luck such as sickness or bad crops. Strasburg celebrates Halloween every year. The Strasburg Elementary throws a party every October 31st. They have done many different things in the past few years like haunted house, pizza parties, and many different games. According to Mrs. Larson, this year they will be having another annual party on Wednesday, October 31. The kids will all dress up in their favorite Halloween costumes. Then they will walk through the high school to show off their creative costumes. After that they will then walk up to the nursing home. Then they will show all of the people either living there or working there how they dressed up this year. After that the kids will go to the north gym. At the gym, they will have many different games that they can play. The games will be out on by the Strasburg Elementary teachers. While the kids can play these games, the sixth grade class is putting on a haunted house that they have worked on the week before. After all these games, the Strasburg Elementary is putting on a dance for its students. The dance will go until the end off school at 3:15 p.m. Halloween is a great time for little kids to dress up and have fun but it can be very dangerous. Many kids get hit by a car every year. If you are driving, please try to be careful and drive slow. By Nic Kramer
