VARROA MITE ALERT Hope a of you had a reativey successfu bee year with strong hives and significant honey production, and have prepared your hives for successfu overwintering. I just wanted to take this opportunity to aert/caution you about possibiity of high mite popuations in the coonies this year due to an unusuay ong bee season. As you a are aware we had a ong bee season this year (at east in the Wiamette Vaey) as a resut of warm weather that prevaied for amost more than 7 months. Longer brood cyce (abundance of arvae) usuay resuts in higher mite popuations, as the mites get a greater opportunity to breed and increase their popuations reative to bees. Most of you might agree that this year was a year with ongest brood cyce seen in the recent past (I have been in Oregon ony for the past 6.5 years, so can t go beyond that number). It has been reported that mite popuations coud increase exponentiay (up to about 50-fod increase) in years when the brood is present in coonies amost round the year (Martin 1998). The economic threshod to treat Varroa mites in genera for temperate areas is considered to be about 3% or higher in Fa, but as economic threshod depends on severa factors it is not idea to aways rey on this magic number. In Oregon during the past six years we have documented mite intensities ranging between 3 % and 5% in Fa (August samping). We observed significanty higher mite intensities this year (2015). The average mite intensity observed in backyard beekeeper coonies was 7%, whereas average mite intensity documented in commercia beekeeper coonies was about 3%. In few backyard beekeeper coonies we observed mite intensities as high as 32%, which is aarming. If you treated your coonies for Varroa on time during Juy or August then probaby you may have your mite popuations under contro, but sti I urge you to monitor mites one more time before overwintering to make sure that the treatments that you used were effective and your current mite popuations are not at damaging eves. If your mite eves are sti high then pease consider using an oxaic acid treatment if feasibe when there is no brood (possiby during November). If you did not use any Varroa mite treatments yet, then pease assess the mite popuations using acoho wash or powdered sugar method as soon as possibe and consider treating your hives with oxaic acid when there is no brood in the coonies. Oxaic acid was recenty approved by EPA and is avaiabe from the bee suppier Brushy Mountain Bee Farm ( com/?gcid=clzrqirb98ccfuiefgods-gj6w). Foowing are some consequences of inadequate or no Varroa mite contro this fa: a) Bee popuation may decine significanty or the coonies might totay coapse. b) Coonies that survive the winter wi start upcoming year/season with higher mite oads and hence coud reach damaging eves soon by ate spring or summer. c) High mite infested coonies may contribute to higher mite drifting via robbing bees to other beekeeper coonies and your existing heathy coonies, as your mite Continued on page 5

2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The honey harvest is over, mite treatments are getting wrapped up, the bees are stuffing their hives with syrup and getting fat for the winter. Time to sow down a bit and start thinking about what I need to be doing over the next few months. I wi aso be getting ready for conference, registering, making hote reservations and paying my OSBA dues. I wi aso be renewing my membership in the American Beekeeping Federation, the organization that watches out for beekeepers at a nationa eve. I fee the nationa visibiity is important and having them watch out for a beekeepers at the nationa eve is something we can not afford to take ighty. As a member of the OSBA I woud encourage you to aso become a member of the AFB. Likewise if you know beekeepers that are not members of the Oregon State Beekeepers Association you shoud be encouraging them to join. In addition to the obvious benefits ike The Bee Line, raising money for research, the State Fair and the fa conference there are the ess visibe benefits ike testifying before the egisature on four different bis just this year that coud or wi have an impact on beekeeping. Severa oca municipaities had been considering beekeeping ordinances that through the OSBA members testimony were either made much ess restrictive or voted down competey because of that testimony. I woud aso ike to mention that at the conference this year we are going to make an effort to recognize the oca branches that donate to research. The OSBA matches funds up to $500 for donations made by any of the oca cubs/branches to the OSU honey bee research ab. This year we are going recognize those donations during the research uncheon at the conference. A representative from your oca cub can come to the uncheon and present the funds there, or if this won t work for your cub you can send a check to the OSBA treasurer and we wi recognize your donation at uncheon. Take care, keep your bees fat and I hope you at the convention this year. Pau 2

Currenty, there are four OSBA credit cards. This number wi be reduced and changed after the new Board is voted in this November. There is a zero baance on a the cards with the exception on one which pays the monthy storage fees and one that paid the cub insurance and website fees. The new IRS ruing makes it mandatory that a business credit cards are tied to persona socia security numbers. Another new IRS aw is, OSBA has to spend at east 30% of tota income on the OSBA Mission and Purpose. We must document our education effort; the Regiona Cubs shoud track their hours and efforts toward this purpose. Grants Jan Lohman reported on a new USDA Speciaty Crop Bock Grant Program. This is a Muti State Program. This grant was announced on September 4, 2015, and the USDA is seeking appications for this new opportunity. The ink beow is for the press reease: Oregon has not yet decided if we wi become a host state for this program. If anyone fees strongy that Oregon shoud become a host state, then pease share feedback indicating this and why. Send emais to: Shannon Brubaker, Speciaty

Box 20548, Keizer, OR The next Oregon State Beekeepers Board Meeting wi be hed on November 6, The motion was made to adjourn. The motion was passed and the meeting ended at 6:56 pm. Varroa Continued from page 1 Respectfuy submitted, Bunny Cramer-Carter infested dead coonies may be robbed by other strong coonies and aid in greater mite dispersa. Aso, pease continue feeding protein to your coonies if poen stores are not adequate in the coonies. Protein feeding not ony heps with brood rearing, but aso heps boost the immune system of bees. We have observed coonies to consume protein unti October 25 in the Wiamette Vaey and few other ocations in Oregon when the weather is sti OK (temperatures around 55 to 60 F). Foowing is a question reevant to Varroa mite bioogy that an Oregon beekeeper asked me few months ago: Question: How many days is the femae Varroa mite outside of the capped brood before it re-enters another ce for reproduction? Do the young femae mites that emerge aong with the new bees aso take the same amount of time to re-enter another arva ce for reproduction? Answer: The time a femae Varroa takes to re-enter (reinfest) a new ce depends on the avaiabiity of oder arva (ready to be capped) to enter, and aso on the number of bees in the hive at that point of time. One study showed that on average femae mites take about 4 to 6 days to reinfest new arva ces. In a ab study, femae mites that were artificiay reintroduced into new ces with appropriate aged arvae (ready to be capped) immediatey after emergence from a ce were abe to reproduce successfuy without any probems. Young femae mites that emerge aong with the foundress mite (parent mite) need time to achieve fu maturity and hence may take a itte more time to enter a ce for reproduction than the parent mite. Research pertaining to these new young mites is scarce, hence providing an average time for infestation is difficut. 10 REGIONAL NEWS Regiona Representatives North Coast The Tiamook Beekeepers were peased to have Dan Speers of Bee Rite Apiaries as our guest speaker. Dan has 18 years of experience and is a mentor for the Oregon Master Beekeeper Program. His presentation was on the Varroa destructor mite. It incuded history and infestation eves but the emphasis was on treatment options. Each option was thoroughy evauated with emphasis on the use of oxaic acid. Dan expained in detai the three oxaic acid options: spray, drip, or vaporize. He brought with him many visuas incuding syringes and a battery powered vaporizer. Dan is avaiabe at dspeers2@yahoo.com for presentations to other beekeeper groups. His presentation was highy organized and comes highy recommended! Eections for next year wi be hed at our November meeting which is aso our annua honey tasting event. It is aways amazing how muti-fora honeys from the same genera area can taste so different. A few arge swarms have happened recenty. One was in progress whie one of our beekeepers was driving down the road. It anded on tree next to the road and by time he got back with his box it had formed its iconic shape and was an easy catch. How ucky those bees are to have such a veteran caretaker! Caire Moody South Coast Overwintering was the subject of a fascinating presentation by a coupe who has aways supported their famiy by commercia beekeeping and, iving in Idaho, but visiting the south coast for the summer and attending the three meetings at OSCBA, shared their experiences of deaing with the cod. One winter the hives were covered over by snow and when the famiy members dug through to the hives, they found that the warmth of the bees had meted the snow around the sides of the hives and since it was warm down there under the snow, the bees made extensive tunne systems through the snow and were fying a around down there. The famiy shipped their bees to Caifornia for wintering, but then decided to change to keeping them ocay, indoors. Now they put a the hives into a buiding that is kept at 42 degrees and in tota darkness. The hives aren t cosed up, since the bees won t fy in those conditions and the buiding remains seaed up for the entire time, from October to February. The bees generate so much heat that it is chaenging for the air conditioners to keep the temperature down. The hives are weighted before and after the overwintering and coonies consume an average of ony about 6 8 pounds each of honey during those months. That aone is a huge savings 10 for keeping thousands of coonies aive for those months of dearth, compared with the expense of feeding them through the winter previousy. Cub members were gad to hear that this commercia beekeeper famiy uses essentia ois. It doesn t get rid of the mite probem, they say, but it heps. When we asked how much they add, it was ike about size of an ice cream scoop Then we reaized that they were deaing with barres, buying arge quantities and mixing into arge vats. They are using a mixture of sugar and corn syrup. They are not entirey in favor of the ater. Corn syrup they store, sugar they brood up, they said of the bees, We want new bees going into the winter, they expained. Ideay the doube deep Langs, the 20 frames, wi weigh about 130 pounds. They aso suppement with Honey Bee Heathy as we as the peppermint and other essentia ois. They now aso add a bit of Corox. That reay heps, they say, to prevent the white mummies... the chak brood. Members reacted in surprise, about the Corox, but soon reaized that we are drinking chorine in our water so that must be simiar. The essentia ois the famiy adds in packets. They used make their own, but now get them from a company in Montana. Cara Fetcher pointed out that when oi is added to the syrup it foats, so that when the syrup gets ow, then there can be such a concentration of the oi that it can have a toxic effect. A visiting beekeeper pointed out that honey is a natura emusifier for the ois, so mix we. The coupe passed around a jar of anise honey that was about forty years od and had been gifted to them. Members each used a disposabe spoon to sampe the dark rich icorice favor. Cara, as has been her custom for years, passed around straws of honey, this time one of the few dark ones that she favors, Coriander. It won many praises aso. Mureen Waker Regiona Associations Cascadia Queen Breeders This year at the OSBA conference the CQB wi be having a few Lunch tabes with Queen Breeders present to hep open communications between queen breeders and the bee keeper community. We are asking this group to submit questions that wi be asked of the queen breeders during the uncheon to hep transfer information to others at the tabe. If you have a question for the breeder, pease send it to Pau Maresh using his emai address pmaresh@spiretech.com. Ken Anthony John Day River Beekeepers The John Day River Beekeepers booth at the Grant County Fair was a big success. The observation hive generated a ot of interest and excitement. Specia thanks to Sarah Russ and Ron Phiips for staffing the tabe on Friday and Saturday. We had a fied day August 29 to tak about fa mite treatment, combining weak hives, and winter prep. There were ony 4

11 peope present so everybody got a ot of hands on time. The big news in the region has been the Canyon Creek Fire. A tota of 39 homes were ost. Severa beekeepers in the area had to move bees but to my knowedge, no managed hives were ost. Not the case with fera coonies. One afternoon I got a phone ca from a woman in the Seneca area who was experiencing strange bee behavior. She was not a beekeeper hersef, and did not know of any in her region. What she described was every afternoon honeybees woud custer, severa meon sized custers, on the posts of her front porch. She said it had been very smokey. The bees were docie and not a bother, but they woud be gone in the morning and back again in the afternoon. Sounds to me ike the bees got the Sheriff s evacuation notice, I tod her. She was mosty curious and concerned for the bees. I tod her I coud come out, or send another beekeeper out, except a the roads en route were cosed due to fire activity. Fortunatey, the fires seem to be subsiding thanks to a bit of rain (and snow in the high country). Rabbitbrush is booming and there is penty of poen avaiabe but the nectar fow seems to be over and done and the bees are getting robby. Matt Aen Kamath Basin Beekeepers Heo from the Kamath Beekeepers! The ate booming ornamenta asters were undaunted by the freeze but the sunfowers and other asteraceae boomed 1½ months eary and have aready petered out. Trusty ate fowering rubber rabbitbrush and grey rabbitbrush (the yeow fowering brush seen aong hwy 97 in centra Oregon) are strongy fowering and the bees are packing in the poen. Now is when centra Oregon beekeepers are puing off honey supers and treating for mites. This year my mite counts are ow, but not ow enough to ignore. So out with the treatment of choice. This year we are considering treating again in the broodess period from November through February with the newy approved oxaic acid vaporizer as you do not have to open the hive to affectivey treat, so the cod weather doesn t matter. As a itte aside... My daughter keeps three hives in Eugene and has approximatey 5 apiaries in cose proximity on her 2 bock-ong street. She is the ony one that treats for mites (which she routiney does 2 times a year after a bad experience with Parasitic Mite Syndrome). And she has ten fod the mite oad that we do in rura centra Oregon. Mite it bee (puns intended) that those bee havers that do not treat their hives may be the reason beekeepers have not been abe to competey contro this probem.... Interesting food for thought. Gen Andresen, who Bi Cathera refers to as our Beekeeper extraordinaire and master gardener was back this month showing off his new inventive way to cean od diseased frames. Consoidation and profiing of the brood nest for winter shoud be mainy compete. As the month progresses, foraging opportunities are few and far inbetween. Did the beekeeper do their job earier on in the year with the assessment of stores? If not, drastic measures are in order that may or may not work to insure winter surviva. The ast syrup feedings in eary October is the best time to incude Fumigian for Nosema contro. 12

13 October 2015 When returning to hives to pu miticide strips, beekeepers can mark hives with bright survey ribbon that fee ight and give them a few more shots of syrup if weather permits. Feeding syrup too ate in the season when temperatures are beow 40 o F can resut in fermented honey in the feeders and frames. Dysentery often foows. Queeness hives can be combined or have nuceus hives instaed. But specia care must be taken to maintain the tight, consoidated brood nest and area above with stores. Late season samping for mite eves, post treatment, give very good information on the efficacy of treatments used. Many beekeepers ike to perform an oxaic acid dribbe, or a fa cean-up ater on in the year when the brood is at its owest eve. Samping in October can hep in the decision making of such measures. Mouse guards instaed in hive entrances, are very cheap insurance for your very vauabe comb. They are aso a big part of an annua IPM for varroa contro. What? Mouse guards as a method of varroa contro? Mice that winter in honey bee hives often deface severa frames of comb as they feed and make their nest. Such frames wi be reconstructed by the bees in the coming year with very arge areas of drone comb that wi serve as varroa generators. Don t et it happen! Whie insuation of hives is not necessary in Oregon, many beekeepers insta covers of various materias over the entire paet of hives in order to shed rain and snow. This reay heps with moisture contro as we as heps preserve hive materias. Once you have done a that you can do for your bees, how about doing something for the beekeeper? Sign up for the Oregon State beekeepers Association Fa Conference. Do it now! A ot of very vauabe information wi be presented there that you just cannot afford to miss! 150TH OREGON STATE FAIR & 2015 ANNUAL OSBA CONFERENCE HONEY SHOWS Dewey M.
