All levels of shooters are welcome, so talk it up with your teams and let's have a good turn out from the Hudson Rod Gun and Archery Club this year. Membership Cards The new membership cards have been ordered by Cal and are in the process of being printed. 5 Hudson Raiders Trap Shooting Team The new team was organized in May and has 17 trap shooters. The Raider coaches are: Rick Persinger,Tom Hellmers & Mike Cravens. This was their very first competitive outing of the year. Rick Persinger and wife, Mike Cravens, Scott Holden & Patrick Vizenor took 7 kids from Hudson to the state shoot which was held in Waukesha WI on June 16th. Matt, Zach and Jordan all placed in the top 50 of all shooters in their divisions. Matt Lohman Jr Varsity division, Zach Lohman- Jr Varsity division, Jordan Persinger Rookie division, Nick Persinger Intermediate/Beginner division, Josh Mattis - Jr Varsity division Austin Vizenar - Jr Varsity division & Luke Holden - Jr Varsity division Left to right :Jordan Persinger Nick Persinger Matt Lohman Luke Holden Zach Lohman Austin Vizenar Josh Mattis Stillwater Area High School Clay Target Team Stillwater Area High School s Clay Target Team coached by Ken Bjorlin & Eric Walstrom just concluded its first year as part of the State High School League (for kids in grades 6-12). The culmination was the State High School Meet recently held in Alexandria. In our inaugural year, 18 kids (both girls and boys) joined the team. The skill levels were varied, and we had many kids with very little organized trapshooting experience. We are proud to say that we went from starting out 7 th in our conference and worked our way up to finishing 2 nd! We even had a number of kids that shot a perfect 25 ; they were beaming with pride! Arguably more importantly, the kids were encouraged to give back to the communities in various ways. Our first season saw kids volunteering their time to help promote Kids Outdoors at a Youth Expo in Hugo. They then literally rolled up their sleeves and cleared brush here at the Gun Club as a small way to say Thank You for the clubs great support! A number of the HR&GC members commented on how well the kids handled themselves. As a Thank you and a season ending celebration for both the Team and the Gun Club, the Pheasants Forever Lady Slippers provided a rib and chicken dinner on the final practice for all involved. It was a nice way to end a fantastic first season. In summary: The Hudson Rod and Gun Clubs support from many of the long time members made the season a success! The SAHS Clay Target Team is already looking forward to next year, but you may see them soon as many of the kids are now hooked on shooting! The Clubs support and the team s commitment is sure to provide growing opportunities to attract and keep more kids shooting for our long-term future. In a society that sometimes tries to take away opportunities for the shooting sports, the SAHS Clay Target Team is extremely appreciative to the Hudson Rod and Gun Club s support in expanding opportunities for kids to shoot.
6 Comments from Club Members High School groups were great. Nice to see them shoot. Well behaved group of youngsters Ralph Nelson We enjoyed watching the high school kids shoot. The groups were courteous and polite. It was great seeing them improve their skills over the weeks that they were here at the Hudson Rod and Gun club. Need to encourage them to keep up their enthusiasm for trap shooting. They are the future of trap shooting Marge Nelson We should all encourage the High School Shooting Teams to keep up their good work. Who better to carry on the shooting tradition of this club and the nation. They are being taught the right way - Jerry Clare The High School shooting squads What a great bunch of kids. And their instructors WOW!! Students are well behaved, respectful of other shooters and more importantly respectful of their handling of guns. Encourage them to keep up with what they are doing because they are the future of this club!!! Susan Clare RSO Training On May 23 and 24th, 2012, the Hudson Rod and Gun Club had an NRA Chief Range Office Tom Erwin, provide Range Officer Training to the following. Jim Gullickson, Kieth Hanson, Michael Herron, JD Hilton, Scott Jorgenson, James Knorn, Patricia Knorn, Mark Leyde, Jason Phillips, Melvin Reed Jr. & Scott Wukawitz. Mel Reed & Scott Jorgenson both provided On The Job Training after the class. Looking Back June 20th 1976 (Fathers day) the St Croix Rod and Gun Club ran a benefit trap shoot for the Variety Club Heart hospital in Minnesota dubbed "Shoot Down Heart Disease". This shoot was one of a series being held in WI and MN to raise money for the hospital. Chuck Darrow manager of the Metro Gun Club in Blaine and Bill Shirley treasurer/secretary of the St Croix Rod and Gun Club of North Hudson were two key figures spearheading the event for the hospital. The event was the idea by a group of people to show the public that shooters are not "all bad guys" as the anti gun anti shooters would have the public believe. 102 shooters from Wisconsin took part in this shoot to throw 8,750 birds. They had pledges to mass $7, for the hospital. Top score registered was 99 x 100 by Bill Shirley for pledges of $ Milt (Chub) Forsyth a sporting goods store owner at Roberts WI confined to a wheelchair doesn't let a physical handicap stop him from enjoying his favorite sport, shot a 91 x 100. with a remarkable display of dexterity. A similar shoot took place at the Metro Gun Club the week of August 21 29, The Beaverbrook Sportsman Club and the Minnesota Game & Fish Club. One thing to note is that all the birds thrown were hand set on single throw machines by kids known as setters in the trap house.
