3 The Aim of Krav Maga To educate and build people mentally, spiritually, and physically so that in a time of need one will be able to defend and attack with maximum speed and efficiency. To establish in one a sense of self-worth. To work toward the bringing together of hearts and ending violence around the world, between all peoples, irrespective of color, race, or religion. - IMI LICHTENFELD Founder Krav Maga May January 1998

4 Santa Barbara Krav Maga Family Self Defense Center Santa Barbara Krav Maga Family Self Defense Center opened in March, 2012, under the leadership of Chief Instructor Pedro E Sanchez. Santa Barbara Krav Maga is pleased to present you with this student handbook of Krav Maga self defense exercises and fighting techniques. As you may well be aware, Krav Maga is the official system of self defense employed by the Israeli Defense Forces, Israeli Anti-terrorist Units and various branches of the Israeli Security Forces. More recently the system has been taught to, and praised by the men and women of American law enforcement agencies. Krav Maga emerged in an environment where extreme violence was common. It has had ample opportunity to be tested and improved under real life conditions, proving to be an ideal and realistic means of defending oneself in the face of life threatening danger. No defensive tactics program in the world is more battle tested than Krav Maga. Although the curriculum contained herein is logically organized by way of a progressive belt testing system, the promulgation and distribution of belts is certainly not the goal of the system. The Krav Maga belt testing system has not only been carefully conceived, but also has been designed to motivate student participants, and foster and encourage a positive learning atmosphere. Most importantly, the belt system aids in the overall organization of subject matter and curriculum within the existing class levels. Our most important goal at Santa Barbara Krav Maga Official Training Center is to help you develop the ability to quickly and efficiently defend against any conceivable threat to you, a friend, or a family member. When reviewing the enclosed material, be mindful that students usually advance through the system at different paces. The most important thing is to attain the actual ability to perform realistic defenses against a variety of attacks, whether the assailant is armed or unarmed. While achieving an advanced belt level is important, it should be secondary to your pursuit of knowledge so one may walk in peace. About Santa Barbara Krav Maga Santa Barbara Krav Maga strives to lead the way along with its affiliates in providing the best, most realistic and cutting edge self defense training anywhere. Our motto is Train like your life depends on it, because it does. At SBKM, we are a community; a team who trains together, battles together, and no one gets left behind. Everyone is welcomed as part of the family Here at SB Krav Maga our goal is to have a healthy, successful company that is a leader in customer service and that has a loyal customer following. We are a community based family orientated company with a set goal of teaching and transferring the knowledge of the principle mindset of Krav Maga to our students. The aim of Krav Maga is to educate and build peoples mentality,

5 spiritually and physically so that in a time of need one will be able to defend and attack with maximum speed and efficiency. To establish in one a sense of selfworth. To work toward the bringing together of hearts and ending violence around the world, between all peoples, irrespective of color, race or religion. As well as physically getting in shape, a student can burn over 700 calories in one session. Ultimately promoting physical active, healthy living and prolonging life. Our most important strength at Santa Barbara Krav Maga Family Self Defense Training is to help develop the ability to quickly and efficiently defend against any conceivable threat to a student, a friend or a family member. Students usually advance through the system at different paces. The most important lesson is that one attains the actual ability to perform realistic defenses against a variety of attacks, whether the assailant is armed or unarmed. While achieving an advanced belt level is important, it should be secondary to the pursuit of knowledge So one may walk in peace. We are a team who trains together, does battle together, and no one gets left behind. We would like to welcome you to our family and we look forward to training with you. If at any time you need assistance we are here to help. Thank you for your patronage and loyalty. Remember the best compliment you can give is to tell a friend about our program. About Pedro Sanchez Pedro E. Sanchez has been involved in martial arts for over 13 years. He started his training in the Brazilian Martial Arts of Capoeria under his good friend Contra Mestre Gui at the Centrosul Capoeria Academy. Later moving on to Jiu Jitsu for a little over 2 years and finally finding his home in Krav Maga, The Israeli Official Self Defense System. In early 2005 he began training at Beach Cities Krav Maga under Master Beau Durocher. Mr. Durocher had just opened his location in Huntington Beach, CA. Coming from Chatsworth, CA as 5 th degree American Tong Soo Doo black belt and an Expert Level Civilian/Military/Law Enforcement Instructor in Krav Maga with over 18 years of training in KM and 25 plus years with traditional martial arts, Pedro always had a respect for the Krav Maga system and immediately found his passion in training and assisting classes. 6 a studio location off 17th street in Costa Mesa CA. There Pedro spent 2 years as a Manager/Lead Instructor growing the location. Pedro was then asked to open and manage the new Yorba Linda location at the Savi Ranch Shopping Center. Students will respect others in class and keep their comments to themselves or for the Instructors. Students will observe the following dress codes at all times: SBKM t-shirt, and shorts or pants to be worn on the mat. Students will attempt to refrain from usage of profanity. There is a zero tolerance for sexual harassment within the SBKM family. Everyone deserves the right to train in a fun, safe and non-threatening environment. Students will bring a towel to keep themselves dry for the benefit of their partner. Students will keep their personal hygiene at a level that is pleasing to others.
