Our guests have a unique opportunity to get to know, and also participate in these traditions. The Christmas season in Wagrain-Kleinarl is both reflective and festive. Wagrain, home of the lyricist of Silent Night, Joseph Mohr, combines a nurturing of regional customs with cultural exchange: The Silent Night events are supplemented by artistic and culinary contributions from guest countries. This year s guest country is Slovenia. A very special Saint Nicholas tradition, a romantic Advent market, and community celebrations to mark the high church holidays: Kleinarl celebrates Christmastime with authentic religious and secular traditions. Rites that are a matter-of-fact part of life in Kleinarl granting guests deep insights into the soul of this beloved vacation region. Silent Night exhibition Pupils of Joseph Mohr elementary and Karl Heinrich Waggerl middle schools in Wagrain conjure up wonderful drawings and creative projects on the Silent Night theme. These works can be admired at the following locations: Raiffeisenbank Wagrain, on market square, in the windows of the Wagrain elementary and middle schools, as well as in the newly built gym at the Kirchboden in Wagrain. 6

7 > Advent markets on market square in Wagrain Highlights of the Advent Program The Wagrain Wishing Linden A magical sight: Lit up by illuminated wicker baskets, Wagrain s village linden tree becomes a place to leave Christmas wishes for the Christ child to read. Silent Night Children s Bakery While the adults are ambling through the Wagrain Advent market on Saturday, the youngsters are busy helping out the Christ child with Christmas preparations. In the children s cookie workshop, dough is turned into small works of art. After they have been baked, everyone decorates the wonderful smelling together and then wraps them up to take home. Joseph Mohr der Vikar von Wagrain Since 2006, a room at the Karl Heinrich Waggerl Museum has been dedicated to the lyricist of the song Silent Night. This permanent exhibition focuses especially on his life and works as Wagrain s parish priest. Open on all Saturdays during Advent from 2 until 6 pm. Waggerl Museum in Wagrain Open on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7, 14 and 21 from 2 6 pm, as well as from Dec. 25: Tue, Thu, Fri from 2 6 pm. For groups of 20 or more, visits outside of these times are also possible. Please make appointments well in advance. 8 > Advent markets in Wagrain-Kleinarl Advent and Christmas Program SATURDAY, 30 NOVEMBER 2013 Advent Market Market square in Wagrain from 4 pm Today, Saint Nick will pay a visit to the Advent market with a sack full of small presents for the waiting children. The grown-ups enjoy delicious treats from our farmhouse kitchens, homemade punch and Christmas gift ideas created by local craftsmen and women. Children can bake their own cookies in the children s bakery. SUNDAY, 1 DECEMBER 2013 Torchlight hike to the Bauernstüberl pub with Advent music Meeting point Market square in Wagrain from 4 pm A romantic torchlight hike on the 1st Sunday in Advent, a great way to begin the peaceful, reflective Advent season. Meets at 4 p.m. on market square in Wagrain from there, a short hike takes us in the direction of Kleinarl to the rustic Bauernstüberl. Once there, you will be greeted by the wonderful romance of Christmas, along with hot spiced wine and punch. Enjoy the festive evening atmosphere with music performed by Hochleitner 2-Gsang along with food, drink and truly pleasant company. 8

THURSDAY, 5 DECEMBER 2013 St. Nicholas Day in the village of Kleinarl from 4 pm Kleinarl practices a very special tradition on St. Nicholas Day. Saint Nicholas and his dark companions, the Krampusses, visit all families in the village. Saint Nick is certain to reward everyone for waiting patiently! Hike by torchlight to the castle hill in Wagrain, with befitting music. In the glow of the castle lights, those Christmas baked goods, homemade Glühwein and hot punch taste even more delicious, while a Nativity play and Wagrain s original Search for shelter tradition provide for an atmospheric backdrop. 9

10 >Advent Concert of Cultures at Wagrain parish church Advent and Christmas Program SUNDAY, 8 DECEMBER 2013 Walking through Advent Kleinarl meets by Öbristbrücke bridge at 6 pm 6 pm Group hike to lake Jägersee. Here you will experience the magic of Advent far removed from the hustle and bustle typical of bigger cities on December 8th: Religious traditions are kept alive and well in Kleinarl thanks to the dedication of countless volunteer helpers. At around 6:30: Worship service at the Jägersee wayside altar with live music. Followed by a friendly get-together at Gasthof Jägersee. FRIDAY, 13 DECEMBER 2013 Advent Concert of Cultures followed by a Christmas market Parish church and Kirchboden in Wagrain 8 pm Advent concert featuring the Pavel choir from Slovenia. At the Naschmarkt market which follows in Kirchboden, Christmas treats and culinary samplings from Slovenia meet regional favorites from Wagrain-Kleinarl. SATURDAY, 14 DECEMBER 2013 Christmas Post Office at Waggerl Museum Wagrain 2-6 pm It isn t just philatelists who take advantage of the opportunity to send Christmas letters bearing the special Silent Night Wagrain Christmas stamp. On this day, when the Waggerl Museum is turned into a Christmas post office, practically all of Wagrain shows up. Wrapped up in snug blankets, our sleigh will glide through Wagrain-Kleinarl and the idyllic winter countryside. Your gaze will roam across picturesque villages, imposing mountain scenery and broad expanses of snow. Once we have arrived at Gasthof Jägersee, we will step inside and warm ourselves up with a glass of Hunter s Tea.
