Sandown primed for Enduro Cup opener I t s time for the talking to stop and for the Pirtek Enduro Cup to begin with the annual endurance season curtain raiser, the Wilson Security Sandown 500. V8 Supercars visit to Melbourne s famous Sandown International Raceway signifies the start of the business end of the season with 900 points to play for at Sandown, Bathurst and the Gold Coast events. After recording 14 victories from from 23 races this year it is clear that Prodrive Racing head into Sandown as the favourites. Mark Winterbottom, Chaz Mostert and David Reynolds, partnered by proven quantities in Steve Owen, Dean Canto and Dunlop Series leader Cameron Waters are expected to provide a fascinating inter team battle. While Winterbottom continues to lead the championship, Mostert will be keen to apply even more pressure on his team-mate after cutting the deficit to 174 points in the standings. Ford s dominance aside, history suggests Triple Eight will be among the contenders to take out the Sandown 500 crown after three consecutive wins. Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell have won the last two although question marks remain over the six-time champion s new chassis which will debut at the event after a difficult pre Sandown test. In the opposite side of the garage Craig Lowndes and Steve Richards have shown strong form in the past and will be eager to halt Prodrive s charge. There will also be plenty of attention on the Holden Racing Team and in particular the #22 entry as Russell Ingall steps out of retirement to deputise for the injured James Courtney alongside Jack Perkins. The Enforcer completed a test at Winton last week and is confident he and Perkins will be on the pace at Sandown. Also returning to V8 Supercars this weekend is IndyCar star Sebastien Bourdais as he joins Lee Holdsworth in the #18 Walkinshaw Commodore. A star in open wheel racing with four Champ Car titles under his belt, Bourdais has also proven himself in V8 Supercars after scoring wins in 2011 and 2012 on the Gold Coast with Triple Eight. Bourdais joins fellow Frenchman Alex Premat (#33 Volvo) and Brits Alex Buncombe (#7 Nissan) and Oliver Gavin (#222 LDM Commodore) to complete the group of international co-drivers this year. Joining the V8 Supercars on a packed schedule of racing is the Australian GT Championship, Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship and the V8 Utes Racing Series. Triple Eight Race Engineering has won the last five pre-bathurst 500-kilometre endurance races covering Phillip Island (2010/2011) and Sandown ( ). 2If car #1 was to win the Wilson Security Sandown 500, Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell would take their third consecutive victory, which has not been done since Sandown became a twodriver enduro in Nine current drivers are former Sandown 500 winners Craig Lowndes, Todd Kelly, Jason Bright, Mark Winterbottom, Jamie Whincup, Warren Luff, Paul Dumbrell, Marcos Ambrose and the returning Russell Ingall. Lowndes, Whincup and Dumbrell are the only multiple winners. 4Lowndes has won eight of the annual pre-bathurst 500-kilometre endurance races the Sandown 500 (1996, 1997, 2005, 2007, 2012), Phillip Island 500 (2010, 2011) and the Queensland 500 (2000). 5Stepping into a Holden Racing Team Commodore for the first time, Russell Ingall s rise from retirement extends his record for most round starts in ATCC/V8SC history to 248.

5 V8 Supercars Wilson Security Sandown 500 I Did You Know 5 6Wilson Security GRM Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin makes his 100th V8 Supercars Championship race start this weekend, after debuting in 2012 at Sandown as co-driver for TEKNO s Jonathon Webb. 7Team CoolDrive co-driver Karl Reindler makes his 50th V8 Supercars Championship round start, in what is his first appearance in the category since 2013 s Gold Coast event. 9Two co-drivers have never competed at Sandown Raceway before French IndyCar ace Sebastien Bourdais and Super Black Racing s and Ant Pedersen. SBR main driver Andre Heimgartner has never raced there, either. 8Dunlop Series drivers Jack Le Brocq and Macauley Jones will make their V8 Supercars Championship debuts at Sandown with Erebus Motorsport and Brad Jones Racing respectively. V8 Supercar Hall of 10Famers Dick Johnson and John Bowe still hold the record for the lowest grid position for a winning car in the history of the Wilson Security Sandown 500. The duo started 15th in 1994 in an EB Falcon. Every year since the Sandown 500-winning car has started inside the top 10 on the grid.

Foxtel will televise every practice, qualifying and race live through its Fox Sport channels. Network 10 will broadcast six events live while providing same day highlights packages from the remaining meetings.
