2 The Talepipe Materials for the Talepipe can be sent to: The TALEPIPE is the newsletter of the FALLBROOK VINTAGE CAR CLUB REGION of the AACA Incorporated as a California Nonprofit Mutual Benefit Corporation P.O. Box 714 Fallbrook, CA (special thanks to Jennifer Moosa for research and layout and to Chuck Tillotson for article submissions) Car Club member, Christine Moosa, who is also a close associate of Car Club president, Roy Moosa, along with her daughter, Jennifer, joined the Fallbrook Summer Nights Those Groovy 60 s evening. Christine won first prize for best costume. When asked how it felt to win best costume, she replied, I was surprised! I didn t even know there was a costume contest. At the AAA Speedway 44th Annual Antique National Drag Race in Fontana (limited to 1954 and earlier vehicles), Frank Hainey drag raced his 1940 Chevy. He s been participating in this race with his 1940 Chevy since Ron Mintle and Frank s brother in law, Steve Case, were his pit crew. There were at lease 100 vintage cars were racing. Frank did not win, but instead had great fun just being part of the event...(so he says. Rumor has it that he hit the Fontana bars after and caused a ruckus claiming that the race was fixed ) Page 2

3 Most Expensive Car Ever Sold Ed Buscis ( r), representing the Fallbrook Vintage Car Club presents a donation check to Courtney Hilborn, Vice President of Operations Showers of Appreciation. Car Club donates to Operation Showers of Appreciation The Fallbrook Vintage Car Club provided a donation recently to Operation Showers of Appreciation (OSOA) whose mission is to honor military families in a unique way by showering the expectant mothers with gifts for their soon to be born infants. Under the guidance of OSOA Vice President, Courtney Hilborn, six to eight showers a year are held for the Camp Pendleton and Miramar families which are funded by private individuals and such organizations as the Vintage Car Club. The donations go toward the purchase of storebought gifts including such items as diapers, baby shampoos, bottles, nursing supplies, blankets, clothing and various other items of necessities for the newborn. CARMEL, Calif. A rare 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO once owned by a famed racing driver and Olympic gold medalist has sold for $34.65 million. Thursday's sale at an auction in California during Monterey Car Week is believed to be a record public auction price for a classic car, topping the nearly $30 million paid for a Mercedes W196 last year in England. The Los Angeles Times reports the $38 million total price including 10 percent buyer fees is half of what experts said it could fetch. The car is one of just 39 Ferrari GTOs produced and was once owned by racer and retired Olympic gold medal skier Henri Oreiller, who died after crashing it into a building How things change after a divorce... 6 HERE IS A BIT OF HISTORY YOU DIDN'T KNOW... Hours after Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941, the Secret Service found themselves in a bind. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was to give his Day of Infamy speech to Congress on Tuesday, and although the trip from the White House to Capitol Hill was short, agents weren't sure how to transport him safely. At the time, Federal Law prohibited buying any cars that cost more than $750, so they would have to get clearance from Congress to do that, and nobody had time for that. One of the Secret Service members, however, discovered that the US Treasury had seized the bulletproof car that mobster Al Capone owned when he was sent to jail in They cleaned it, made sure it was running perfectly and had it ready for the President the next day. Al Capone's 1928 Cadillac V-8 "Al Capone" Town Sedan Became the President's Limo December 1941 Mechanics are said to have cleaned and checked each feature of the Caddy well into the night of December 7th, to make sure that it would run properly the next day for the Commander in Chief. And run properly it did. It had been painted black and green to look identical to Chicago's police cars at the time. To top it off, the gangster's 1928 Cadillac Town Sedan had 3,000 pounds of armor and inch-thick bulletproof windows. Page 6

7 "Previous Owner." Footnote: The car was sold at auction in 2012 for $341,000. Page 7
