1 The Witches Wail June 2005 Volume 05, Issue 5 Sports Car Club of America - Wichita Region Special Interest Articles Solo Mid Div 5 Solo, Rally, Racing, Reports. Calendars and Schedules RE-REPEAT Dave Geis So did you try to get a discount at O Reilly Auto Parts when you were rebuilding the <insert parts here> and find out that the discount wasn t there? Well, there s an explanation and the fix has been made. It turns out that O Reilly corporate won t allow discounts for Clubs. As soon as Jason found out about this, he got some things changed so Wichita Region members can have the discount on hard parts. The new account is still the same number (515242) but it s now listed under D & L Racing. And don t forget that this discount is good at any O Reilly s in the 25 states that they re located in. (Hmmm... how s that last sentence for bad grammar?) And speaking of money, I m sure you ve heard all the talk about how expensive Racing/Rally/Solo is, but have you ever figured out which is the most expensive? Since I ve got a lot of time on my hands, I thought I d do the figuring for you. However, with all of the variables of what type of car, the level of prep, etc., etc., etc., let s just do entry fees vs. time on track for SCCA SOLO CHAMPIONSHIPS GET NEW HOME, DATE IN 2006 Individual Highlights RE PEAT continued 2 BOD Minutes 3 Solo Report 4 Club Racing 5 Rally Report 6 Calendar / Schedules 7 Solo MidDiv 5 Report 15 TOPEKA, Kan. (May 5, 2005) Sports Car Club of America, Inc. has announced that the 2006 The Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships and The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Finale will be held at Heartland Park Topeka, utilizing its paddock areas and road course. Additionally, the event dates move back one week and will be contested in late September. We re very happy to partner with Heartland Park to create nearly a month of SCCA Championship competition in 2006, SCCA Director of Solo Tasha Goodale said. Cont page 11

2 2 The Witches Wail RE REPEAT cont. WANTED!!!! Lake Afton T-shirts Do you have a drawer full of Lake Afton T- shirts that you no longer want? If you do, please donate them. I would like to make a quilt (or two or three) to be raffled off at the MidDiv Convention with proceeds going to a charity such as Ronald McDonald House or the Wichita Children s Home, etc. I would appreciate receiving them as soon as possible. Please contact me at or bring them to the monthly meeting. With much thanks, Linda Timmons now. It comes as no surprise that Road Rally is the least expensive of the three venues we do in this Region. Not only can you take your unprepared street vehicle, your probably won t even break anything. Let s take a $20.00 entry fee. If we spend 2 ½ hours going through all of the instructions, we ve spent an average of.22 cents per second. Notice that that says, point 22 as in less than a quarter of a cent per second. Club Racing brings up a not-so-close second place, but it s also a lot of track time. For a $ Regional/National race, you ll get Saturday practice of 15 minutes, 20 minutes of qualifying, and a 14-lap race. Just for the heck of it, let s say you average 1:25/lap at Hallett, which makes a 19:50 race time. That makes Saturday times of 54 minutes and 50 seconds. Sunday s 15 minute practice/qualifying and the same minutetwenty-five lap times x 25 laps (35:25) bring the total track time for the weekend to 95 minutes and 45 seconds. Which makes $ divided by 5745 seconds equal 4.96 cents per second of track time. And let s say we have a Solo course that you average 50 seconds per run on, and make 4 runs. That $15.00 entry fee works out to 7.5 cents per second! Of course, your mileage may vary. I ve made the mistake of keeping track of everything I ve spent on the Vee over the years and kept track of my track time. Since Volkswagen parts are relatively inexpensive, our total expense runs (Lu, don t read this you don t want to know!) almost 58 cents/second. And unfortunately, that doesn t even include consumables; tires, fuel, oil, etc. Lessee... we ve had the car about seven years, had about 34, seconds of timed competition. Uhhh... I ll let you do the math cause I really don t want to know. But, yep, we re havin fun!

4 4 The Witches Wail Solo Report Tom Urbanek The month of May has been pretty quiet in the SOLO department here locally. There was the first Midwest Divisional was held down in Oklahoma City at the beginning of the month and another one will follow at the end of the month in St Louis. I know several of our drivers went to OKC for the first Divisional. Congratulations to all that went. I m sure less will go to the St Louis event, but I wish the best of luck to any that do make the journey. Well it wasn t really SOLO, but it was directed at getting the SOLOists exposed to road racing. I m talking about the PDE held down at The Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Oklahoma on May 21 and 22. Several local drivers attended, including myself. Even though it was hot I know I had a great time. I m really looking forward to doing many more track events like that. For those that didn t go but were on the fence about it, you really missed out. Don t let the next event like this pass you by. Our next event locally is scheduled for June 12th at Boeing chaired by Bill Preheim and Bruce Sargent. Make sure to check the website the day before the event to make sure we are still having it at Boeing. With the pending sale of Boeing, we could be forced to change sites quickly. If we are forced to change sites we will go to either Strother Field or Raytheon. Also coming up is our own Divisional held up in Salina at the East Crawford Recreational Area on June 25 and 26 chaired by Bob Cummings. 5 5 Club Racing Scott Bettinger We had our second event at Hallett May 21/22. The weather was HOT, the racing was HOT and the PDE was COOL. There were 43 entries in the Driver School/Regional and 27 entries in the PDE. Three of our new local drivers decided to go for a three day event by going to a Stephens Brothers Driver s School Friday: David Leivian, in his EP Alfa, Dave Gird in Paul Sherman s SSC and Sam Parsons in his ITS BMW. All bared with the heat and all three completed both schools and raced on Sunday. The PDE, I felt, was very well attended. As stated above, we had 27 drivers out having fun. They all did a very good job and, I think, had a good time. They maybe learned a few things. I would like to thank the Wichita Region members. You asked for the PDE and supported it very well. Over half the entries in the PDE were from Wichita Region. This was my first time as a Chief Instructor and I learned a lot. I hope to make improvements for next year. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Now for the races: We had three race groups. This first group would the biggest with IT, SM, IT7, and T3 cars. Wichita had five drivers in this group. Rick Harris, SM, finishing highest overall in 8th position and 1st in class. Rob Roytas was 14th overall and 1st in class. Bernie Mermis was 15th overall and 3rd in class. Dave Gird was 16th overall and 1st in class. Last of all five drivers was Sam Parsons. Sam was running well; having a great race with a Miata until a slight mistake took him off at turn one and through the tire wall. Sam was ok, but the car was damaged. Sam was told this is where the test starts: If you fix the car and come back, you are a true racer. Sam said he would definitely be back! Group two had two Wichita Region Drivers: David Guinn in an AS Mustang and David Leivian in an EP Alfa. Guinn took the lead immediately and stayed there. Guinn finished 1st overall and 1st in class. Leivian finished 3rd overall and 1st in class. Group three was Open Wheel and had no Wichita Region drivers in it. The weekend was hot, but we all had fun! I would like to thank all the workers. We were shorthanded, but made it through. Things ran pretty smoothly. If you missed this event, please come and play with us July 4th weekend (July 2 & 3). This will be your last chance this year to have fun at Hallet.

6 6 The Witches Wail Rally Report Mid Div Rally - Bruce Bettinger Three up and three down, two to go or just maybe three to go. Round one was the Road Dog with the Wichita Region taking us down into the Winfield, Dexter area. I can t say too much about the Road Dog because the rally master sees things the competitors don t (at least I hope so). Every one seemed to have a good time and that s what counts. Round two was the Kansas Regions Spring Break. They found some really good rally roads where I never would have thought there were any. They also tried a new way of running their controls that was really slick. They used palm pilots to clock cars in and out and then feed that data into a program that had results ready almost as soon as the last car came in. There were a few problems, but they may hit on some thing we may all want to look into. Charlene and I were very impressed with the growth of expertise the Kansas Region has made. Two seasons ago we made some of their events and while we had a good time, we could see areas where they needed to improve. We were unable to make any last season so we were very impressed to see just how far they have come. Round three took us down to northeast Oklahoma. NEOKLA s Gary Deaton wrote a rally for beginners before the series really was firmed up and then added it to the series. He was concerned that it would be too simple for experienced ralliest. Well simple isn t bad. Charlene and I had a great time. As normal Gary gave us some great roads that were fun (except the state or county set the speed limits too low). Have You Lost Your Shirt Because You Just Didn t Know The Rules? Not a problem. Just give Lu a call and replace that shirt with a brand new Wichita Region T-Shirt. And while you re at it ask her about the 2005 Solo rule book so it doesn t happen to you again. Assorted patches, decals and stickers also available. Call Lu at or , or at lgeis@scz.org. So we have seen three events and they have all been a bunch of fun. We have two more scheduled for later in the year. Route 66 Ticks and Kicks which is turning into a neat event using as much of the old route 66 as Bob Stratton can in. The Witch s Ryde with Keith Pfautz as rally master will I know have some interesting twists. Now wouldn t be really really great to have a third event? After Kent Prather s Spring Break and the fun we had on that I would like to see them add their July 9th rally to the calendar. September is too long to wait for the next event. If you think they should add this event to the calendar please help me convenience them. Call, write, and / or Kent and every one you know in the Kansa region and ask for it. Here are the results so far. I think it will be real hard to take class A from Rich Bireta and Albert Weaver or who ever Rich finds to run with on the next events, but maybe. You could take class B from Charlene and I as we are in first only because we have been to three events and no one else in the class has. Class C is wide open and could go to any one that wants it. In each rally a different team has won C so it s any bodies win to be had. There is also a whole bunch of people who have worked and event that if they run could jump in with a bunch of points. This could really turn into a great season of good rallying and a bunch of fun

11 11 New Solo Location Cont. The new facility will provide ample room and amenities for the competitions and an improvement in the course surface. We re also able to move the events a week later without stepping on the Club Racing Runoffs, which will also be held at Heartland for the first time. The 2006 events will begin the weekend of Sept with The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Finale. Following the traditional Monday off, the four-day The Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships begin Tuesday, Sept. 26, concluding Friday, Sept. 29. We hope to continue the tradition established by David Stremming and the Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority of hosting a wonderful Solo event, Heartland Park Topeka Owner Raymond Irwin With the Runoffs and now the Solo event coming to Heartland Park Topeka in 2006, we are thrilled to be hosting the two largest amateur motorsports championships in the world in the same month. Forbes Field has been a wonderful host for the last 10 years and will host this year s events as well, Goodale added. We have to extend a special thanks to Dave Stremming and the entire MTAA for being a strong supporter of the Solo program for so many years. That said, we re excited to move down the road to begin the next chapter of National Solo history. 12 12 The Witches Wail MIDDIV Convention November Just a short note to let everyone know the Wichita Region is hosting the Midiv Convention this year. This means we need the support of all our members to work on and attend the convention. We have some things planned that we hope will make the convention attractive to you. We are planning tire seminars, shock seminars, Solo Car Prep, Race Car Prep, Solo Course Design, the usual Flag and Communications, Rally, Timing & Scoring and Registration, Race Tech Training School, Solo II Safety Steward School, Midiv Executive Committee Meeting, Race Town Hall and Solo II Town Hall just to mention a few things planned plus a Saturday Night Banquet and Awards and Keynote Speaker. We have a Solo scheduled for Sunday the 13th and those who attended the convention, will be able to enter the Solo FREE. Make plans NOW; MARK your calendars to attend Midiv Convention. We plan to have something for everyone. PS If there are any seminars you want to have at convention, let me know and we will see what we can do. Can t promise anything, but will try if there is enough interest. Charlene Bettinger MINOR WAIVERS Just a reminder: Minor Waivers are only good for one calendar year. If you had one on file for your minor last year, you will need to do a new one for this year. The Minor Waiver can be used for all events in 2005 if both parents/guardians have signed the release and it is either notarized or a current member witnesses the signatures. A minor will not be allowed in a hot area unless twelve years of age or older and have the Minor Release with signature of both parents/guardians on it. We can do an event release for minors that will not be in a hot area with the signature of one parent/guardian, but that release will be good for that event only. You should have two copies (if you down load off the net) made and after presenting at the first event, you keep one copy and bring it to all subsequent events. You need to show that copy to the registrar at each event the Minor attends. You could also be asked to show the Minor Waiver to an event official at any time. If you use the form provided by National (not from the internet), it is has a carbon. You will keep the carbon copy after presenting the Minor Waiver at the first event. If the registrar forgets to give you back a copy, be sure to ask for it. It is very important you have a copy of the Minor Waiver form for each Minor you bring to an event. 15 15 R&S Racing and Solo Performance Specialties Midwest Division Solo Series 2005 By Greg Reno Oklahoma City--Event #1 (SoonerTime) of a 5 event series. That s right, we have 5 Divisionals this year. Oklahoma City, St Louis, Salina (Hosted by Wichita), Kansas City, and the Championship event in Topeka. It will be a great season. I m looking forward to it. Thanks to everyone on the Happy Team for putting on a great event. And Thanks to all the competitors for making the trip, and making the event a success. Please check out the St Louis Divisional May 29th and 30th. Oklahoma City, last years Divisional of the year, took the challenge again this year. The Happy Team once again, did a great job. The OKC guys do specialize in Hospitality. They do everything with the entrant in mind. They arranged a nice event hotel, secured a great site, fed us excellent food, and the give-aways..my lord.i think they got donations from every corporation in OKC. Everyone at Saturdays banquet had to of left with something. And the grand prize of the evening worth $100. An entry to the 2005 Solo Nationals, was won by Travis McMillan. I think everyone in the room was hoping for that one. I know I was. Another thing that the Happy Team came up with, that must have taken a lot of work. They went to all of the local car dealerships from each manufacturer and asked for donations, to be given away to the marquee leaders as of Saturday. For instance, the fastest Honda driver may have gotten an insulated thermos, and the fastest Ford driver got a ball cap and so on. Again, there were even more awards given away. Very creative. And if that wasn t exciting enough we had an on stage marriage proposal, and acceptance! So on to some racing action. We had 113 drivers take on the weekend. SS 2 drivers 1 trophy. Frank Wietharn from Topeka KS in his Z06 had his way this weekend. He had a very fast AS 2 drivers 1 trophy. Jim French put on a great show. With a combined time of BS 5 drivers 2 trophies. Andy Hohl, driving Christopher Hammond s 350z, had an amazing weekend. He lead both days. He was faster than AS and SS with a ! Which earned him a 3rd place finish in the PAX. Asher Wunderl in a BMW M3 was about a second back in 2nd place and also in the Top 10 PAX. Christopher Hammond was one spot out of trophies by just over a tenth. CS 5 drivers 2 trophies. Seam Grubb in his izoom graphics Mazda Miata had a comfortable lead both days with a combined time of , and he also placed 7th in the PAX. But 2nd place was a battle, a MR2 Spyder battle. John Larandeau was leading day1 by.071 If that wasn t close enough. Day2 Michael Elliott actually had the faster time, but not quite enough to even make up even that slim margin. And John ended up in 2nd by a mere.034sec. CSL 1 driver 1 trophy. Ann Commerford from Omaha NE had a in her Toyota MR2 Spyder. And she did so, without hitting a single cone. DS 1 driver 1 trophy. Eric Marusa of OKC ran a in his street tired Subaru WRX. ES 3 drivers 1 trophy. Ron Williams drove great as always to a total time of He lead both days over his wife Tina Jag Williams in the family MR2. Ron also earned himself a 9th place finish in the PAX. And George Walker rounded out the field in his Mazda Miata.

16 16 The Witches Wail GS 8 drivers 3 trophies. One of the event s largest classes. Craig Wilcox drove his well driven and well prepared Mini Cooper S to the win. With a total time of , it earned him 2nd place in the PAX index. Ryan Barnard co-drove Craig s Mini to a 2nd place class finish and a 4th place PAX finish with a Greg Reno barely sneaked into 3rd over fellow Celica driver Chris Ketter. Greg finished with a (good for 5th in the PAX) over Chris , a.158sec margin for 3rd place and the final trophy spot. Chris Ketter also got made the Top10 with a 6th place PAX finish. GS will be a good class to watch in the coming events, with some great competition. GSL 1 driver 1 trophy. Linda Mitchell drove her Ford Mustang to a without hitting any cones. Very nice. HS 4 drivers 2 trophies. Bob Michalski drove his Honda Accord to the class win, both days, with a combined time of over Dave Patton in his 1969 Austin Mini, the original Mini, and a right hand drive model at that. Dave finished with a Lawrence Duty was just out of the trophies in his Protege5. ASP 2 drivers 1 trophy. Jeff Ivers drove his beautiful 1967 Lotus Elan (boy I d like to have one of those.) to a win with a over Craig Mitchell in his 1974 Porsche BSP 3 drivers 1 trophy. Jim Harrison had a nice weekend in his 1972 Corvette. His total time was a comfortable over Darren Garvin s very nice Z, and Chris Howe s new 350Z. CSP 6 drivers 2 trophies. Mazda ruled the class this weekend. Miatas were in the top 4 spots. Jason Judd was in 2nd after day one, behind Brent Clark by about 5tenths and some cone problems. But on Sunday, Jason turned it up a notch, and ended up winning with a to Brent s CSPL 3 drivers 1 trophy. Again, all Miatas. Trisha Clark had a great weekend with a comfortable lead both days. She finished with a DSP 3 drivers 1 trophy. Pat Lipsinic s Subaru 2.5 RS was definitely the car to have with the cold temps and the low grip surface that the 1st heat had to offer. Even with 7 cones over the weekend, he managed to keep his fast runs clean, and that clenched the win over Mike Holtz s Merkur XR4Ti. ESP 8 drivers 3 trophies. The other large class of the event provided some great competition, Subaru s were on top. And we had some shake ups in this class that definitely caused some excitement. After Saturday s runs we had James Elterman in 1st in his Sti, Mark Jorgenson only a tenth back in 2nd, and Jeff Templton co driving Elterman s Sti was in 3rd. But on Sunday Jeff was sitting on 3 dirty runs, then went out on his 4th run and just put the smack down. A clean fast run. Fast enough to move him from 3rd to 1st! Way to go Jeff! His total time was That also earned him an 8th place finish in the PAX. In 2nd place was the car owner, James Elterman with a and 3rd was Mark Jorgenson with a ESPL 2 drivers 1 trophy. Beverly Carlile was the clear leader both days, and was clean both days. She finished with a in her Mustang over Maureen Wallace. FSP 1 driver 1 trophy. This turned out to be a 1 car class after Greg Laws broke his tranny in the Phrog, making him unable to attend. I m sure he ll have it ready for StL. But Mike Glass didn t seam to mind. He still drove that MGB GT like he stole it. He finished with a FSPL 1 driver 1 trophy. Rhonda Glass ran her 2nd divisional of her racing career, and you can see the confidence building. She ran a STS 6 drivers 2 trophies. After day 1, We had some of the closest competition of the event, right here in STS. Eric Denissen was leading over David Avard by a very slim.055sec. Followed by Julie Avard by.058, followed by Jim Rowland back another.015sec. So that made 4 drivers within a tenth of a second. Wow! Day 2 David Avard

17 17 really stepped up his game, pulling up a spot with a nine tenths lead, and took the win with a total time of The rest of the field still remained pretty close to one another. 2nd place was filled by Eric Dennisen with a total time of STS2 2 drivers 1 trophy 1 marriage. It was husband vs. wife. This time the man got to win. Rob Seelig s total time was to Michelle s of SM 10 driver 4 trophies 3.5 no shows. Yes that right 3 people didn t show up for the event, and another didn t show for the second day. That makes for more trophy spots for the 6 that did show up. Brandon Jackman pulled himself up from 3rd place after day 1, to take the lead with a total time of Micheal Lieberman remained in 2nd place both days with a Grady Wood slipped from 1st to 3rd with a And accepting that 4th and final trophy spot was David Cole with a CP 4 drivers 2 trophies. Mustangs took both trophies. V8 vs Turbo 4cyl. Dave Whitworth s V8 powered SoloPerformance.com car proved to work. (Thanks for your sponsorship Dave!) He had a total time of Chris Miller took second with a total time of CPL 1 driver 1 trophy. Beth Whitworth drove very well this weekend. She was fast enough for a 3rd position in the open class. But this way she got a trophy. She was clean all weekend with a Great Job! DP 1 driver 1 trophy. What happened to all the DP guys? This is usually a competitive class. Well, I guess we have to wait until the next event to see the DP action. But that didn t stop Bill Cutrer and his X1/9 from having some fun. Bill ran a FP 3 drivers 1 trophy. Jonathon Jackson took the win in his Porsche with a over a couple Mazda RX7 drivers. Mark Akridge was leading on Day 1, but Jonathon put together a couple really fast runs on Sunday, to take him to the top. DM 2 drivers 1 trophy. Lee Mabee in his Super 7 replica was cone free both days, and plenty fast to take the win with a over Travis McMillan s Neon. EML 1 driver 1 trophy. Past National Champion Ann Vogel is trying her hand in the husband s Subaru Sti. She was cone free, and took home a trophy with a FM 5 drivers 2 trophies. FM is going to be a great class to watch this year. We have some great drivers with fast cars in our division. Steve Pistora took home a gallon jug of hot sauce at the banquet for being Hot Driver. This was earned by having FTD. His time was a , so naturally he won the class too. Vern Maxey of KC was not far behind with his beautiful formula V, ran a to take 2nd place. FML 1 driver 1 trophy. Theresa of Salina, ran a very fast in the family Red Devil. FJ1 1 driver 1 trophy 1 fast Lawn Mower. Here is your #1 PAX driver of the weekend. That s right it s a Junior Kart driver. Way to go Spencer!!! Spencer Elliott drove his kart to a very fast STX 4 driver 2 trophies. It was Lexus vs Subaru. Dan Crank was leading with his WRX on Saturday by.020sec. But Kyle Walther s IS300 came out on top. He drove very nice on Sunday to pull out a full second lead. Way to go! STU 4 drivers 2 trophies. New Daddy, Brandon Burkhart had his STI hooked up this weekend on Street Tires!! Wow, very nice. In 2nd place was Andrew Watts in his STI with a SM2 3 drivers 1 trophy. Charles Watts Supercharged Infiniti G35 led the way in SM2 all weekend. He ran a That Supercharger sure does sound nice!

Duty May seemed to be a very quiet month for the most part around our house. Of course a lot of things were going on in the club with the PDE, Club Racing, etc. And of course I did go to Oklahoma for the Divisional, as previous they put on a good event and we had a great time. We have been to a couple of cars shows over the last few weeks, we have a brand new one here in Newton at the Historic Fox Theater, had a good turn out, beautiful day for it, and always fun to have main street blocked off. I have been way too busy to even think much about cars stuff this month. But the next few months look to be extememely busy for us. Please make sure to give Greg Laws a call if you can assist with the All Wheels Car Show at Lake Afton on June 12 th. Everyone I have spoken with said they really enjoyed the PDE at Hallett and are all planning on attending next year. I would like to give kudos to all those who helped bring that about, great job. I had a fiery respsonse to an issue I ran across that I was going to print from my available soapbox, but having weighed the pro s and con s of carrying on a printed war of words, have decided to not waste any more time on it. I think the people who caused my heartache know how I feel, even though they did not all respond, and those that did said they really did not care how I felt about it. Not a problem for me, they just won t see me at THEIR events. I would not be all that surprised if others will act the same way I do, at least that is what several have told me. Take care and be safe, respect and support your fellow SCCA members.
