It must be the time for the season to start with everything that s going on. Can I get any more involved? It started out with a cancelledatthelast minute auditing of the Region s financial records on Wednesday. Last minute meetings necessitated a postponement so, no sweat, we ll reschedule. On Thursday, Steve Pistora from Salina brought his Spec Miata down for me to do the annual on before he headed for St Louis. And he doesn t even get to drive it! He and his wife Teresa are both going for the double school on the 25 th and 26 th of March. She gets to drive their car and he has to make do with a rental SM. Think he has any problems convincing his wife he needs something for the car ;)? 3 3 (RERepeat continued from page 1) Saturday started with a meeting in Ponca City, OK for the AVRG to hammer out some of the final details for the Race season that s starting this month. It was a pretty good meeting except for the noticeable lack of anyone attending from the Oklahoma Region. Paul Sherman got to attend his first AVRG meeting and may now be sorry he got himself nominated as vicechairman of the Group. I think it s probably because the rest of us have been around long enough to not fall for something like that! Two things of note happened at the meeting. Racers, because of increasing costs, we ended up doing a $20.00 increase in entry fees across the board. It was a tough decision to make, but even with the increase, Hallett is still one of the cheapest places in the Division to race. The other thing was whether or not to go on with the PDX in conjunction with the School/Regional in August. One of things we have to consider is how many of the potential drivers will be going to Topeka for the Divisional Solo on the same weekend. If you re interested in doing the PDX (formerly know as a PDE, a PDC, a HPCCC, a....), please contact me within the next month to let me know. If we can t generate enough interest, it might not happen which would be a loss for everyone. Then I hotfooted it to back to Kansas to check out the Road Dog Rally. Arriving just in time to see the second, third and fourth cars leave the start, there wasn t much I could do to help man checkpoints, etc. I can hardly wait to read the results in this edition of the Wail. Brian Meyer said he ended up with a solid fourth place with six hundred and some points with only five checkpoints????? Then off to Raytheon on Sunday for our first Solo of the year! The car was ready, but driving an openwheeled, open cockpit car in 30 some degrees, 20 some mph wind and drizzle just didn t do it for me. I ended up working as Safety Steward all day, so I still had quite a bit of fun. And many thanks to the others who came out and worked all day but didn t run. But Lu and Jason neither one of you were standing outside in the cold all day! The rest of this week after the Wail deadline? Tuesday is the rescheduled audit and Wednesday is the Membership meeting. And David Levian still needs a logbook issued on his new race car. And trophies need to be picked up for the first race. And.... and..... Are we havin fun yet? SOMETHING NEW FOR APRIL TShirt Contest At the April 26 th Membership meeting we are going to have a dry TShirt contest. (Sorry guys, but it will still be a bit chilly for the other kind.) Just wear your favorite car related T Shirt. This might be your favorite because of the graphics on it. Or it might be the message it sends, or even because of a very special memory associated with it. Were you wearing it when you bought your first car or ran your first Solo? How about the one you had on when you won your first Rally, or worked your first race?. (If it shrank in your closet over the winter or the past few years, who cares, just bring it with you.) Sherry and I will be appointing an unbiased panel (yeah right) of judges for the contest. Of course, it is always possible that we will be the unbiased panel of judges. Who knows? At any rate first place will win a really cool (as yet undetermined) prize! So find that special tshirt and come to the April membership meeting. It s time to do Something New! Did You Go? Just wanted to let you know that if you missed the first Something New Membership Meeting that you really missed a great time. We had three door prizes that night. The first was really cool jacket donated by BG Products. Keith Pfautz won that. The second was a certificate for dinner for two at Red Mesa or Red Beans donated by Jim from Red Mesa. This was won by new member (that night) Doug LaMoureaux. The third was coupon for a free Solo. Now I know you won t believe this but Dave Geis won this. I really didn t have anything to with it. Also thank Brian Meyer for the Solo Course design class he put on that night. Hopefully we will be seeing some really great courses this year. We are hoping to have some fun stuff coming up at this years meetings so come on out!

8 The Witches Wail SOLO REPORT David Guilliams / Tom Urbanek Well, the first event is in the books. We had 46 total entries for the day, which is pretty good considering the weather conditions. For those of you who did not brave the elements, I ll sum it up for you: it was cold, windy and rainy. Sounds like fun, doesn t it? Top time of the day was placed by Brian Meyer in his 100% stock Mazdaspeed 6, which seems a little fishy since he was one of the main course designers Seriously though, I would like to thank all those who attended and stood out in the cold rain so we could all have a chance to play this wouldn t be possible without the dedication of everyone involved. And I would like to extend many more thanks to the following individuals: Dave Gird, Dave Geis, Paul Sherman, Jason Rogers, Mike Herrick, Brian Meyer, Lu Geis and my cochair Marcus Hidvegi. Our next event is April 23 rd at Strother Field in Winfield. This event will be chaired by first timer Jason Rogers. I have no doubt that he will do a great job. Hopefully it won t rain. Also, every 4 th Wednesday of the month we have our Solo Planning Committee meeting, headed by Kevin Anderson, at 6:30 at Red Mesa Grill on Tyler. This meeting is open to anyone and everyone. If you have something Solo related on your mind, or just want to hang out, come on in and stop by! Dave Guilliams davidguilliams@yahoo.com Tom Urbanek tjurbanek@hotmail.com Marcus The Flying Hungarian Hidvegi Sometimes things just do not go the way you would like them to go, but when it is said and done and you look back on it you see it really wasn t that bad, in fact it was really good. So came and went our first Solo of the 2006 season. It is spring break but somebody forgot to tell the weatherman that we were racing today and wanted seventy degree weather, sunny to partly cloudy and a five mph wind out of the south. Instead we got a wet surface (wet enough that we found a crawfish in the ditch that runs thru our course) to run on, along with cloudy skies, forty degree weather, and gusty winds. As the course was going down the parking lot was filling up, we eventually had 48 racers running in our first event for the 06 season. I think the coolest thing about the day was the turnout of new people to run their cars with us. Doug Lamoureaux from Washington ran his Subaru WRX STI in AS and looks to be a serious contender who will be at every event. Donnie Means brought out his 03 Ford Focus SVT and ran some killer times for his first solo event. Keep your eyes on this guy. I rode with him on his first run and while sitting in grid afterwards he said smiling from ear to ear I m hooked, that was a blast. Then after his second run with an even bigger grin he turned to me and said I m hooked! When is the next event, I ll be back I think he will be back. There were also several other new faces that I did not get a chance to talk to. Everyone I talked to enjoyed the course. I got to tech a few cars and cochair my first event along with Tom Urbanek who held top chair position. Thanks to Dave Geis for heading safety and making sure our course was good to go with very little changes. And thanks to all the workers who stayed and helped with teardown. So it wasn t sunny and seventy five with the birds singing and the smell of spring in the air. But it was a good day no a real good day of racing. And in my book that s a real good thing. Marcus The Flying Hungarian Hidvegi

9 RALLY NOTES Keith and Judi Pfautz Submitted By Bruce Bettinger Welcome to the ROAD DOG RALLY 2006! A charity fund raiser for the Kansas Humane Society! Man bites dog. That is weatherman bites the Road Dog. After the great tshirt weather we had for the Meet In The Middle, the bottom fell out giving us cold, drizzly to rainy weather. Also stacked on where the solo on Sunday after the Dog and WSU in the big dance on Saturday. I can t think of a worse placed event. Those of you who said I should have left the Dog on the 25 th may well be proven correct. On top of everything else we lost most of our checkpoint workers to one thing or another. At one point I had Greg Laws, Charlene and myself as workers. Carolyn and Jennifer Laws agreed at the last moment to help and Scott Bettinger got off work in time to help so we made it. Dave Geis and Paul Sherman made it back from their AVRG meeting in Oklahoma to help almost in time. Sweep car was still in Derby, but didn t know where to tell them to go. Keith and Judy Pfautz who were entered had agreed to also work as sweep. Just about everything that could stop a rally happened on this one. It all started out well as I was using most of the same roads as the last few years so writing it was simple. The new stuff I added was an odometer run out to Augusta and then down to Douglass for control 1. From there it was pretty much the same as before. Some how from being way ahead of the curve I ended up behind the eightball. Sunday a week before the rally Charlene and I went out to precheck and measure the event. (I preach to everyone that a rally should be complete and ready for precheck two weeks before the event. Maybe I should listen.) We were doing ok until coming out of Dexter on the last leg the car stopped running. Tried to call Scott to come and get us with his trailed, but he wasn t home. The car started so lets try to finish. It ran for awhile and stopped again. This time we called Greg Laws and told him our problems. He said he would hook up the twowheel dolly and come and get us. The car started again and we decided to continue while watching for Greg. A few more stops and starts and a wave to Greg as he passed us found us at Strother s field where the last control was to be. Parked at the last control with Greg behind us we though we were going to be ok. Not so. The odometer, which had been giving us trouble, was off again. No way to get the car and odometer working we gave up and put it on the dolly to tow it to Greg s. Scott would come down Monday and haul it back to Wichita. A mere $150 and several days later the car was back. So Thursday after work I ran down to Strother s to get those last two readings I needed. This was also the day the flu jumped on me at 9:00 in the morning. I got home and crashed. Friday too sick to go to work I figured I could do the final paper work. Slept till noon and then made myself finish in time to go get copies made when Charlene got home. All this time watching the weather get worse and worse. Like I said I have never seen such a stacked deck. This is where, in the Hollywood version, the weather would clear and thirty cars would show up for a grand rally with ten extra people coming out to work. Well Derby ain t Hollywood and it didn t happen. We did get four teams and six workers counting me so we had a rally. Brian Meyer with new navigator Adam Arnold placed 4 th. This was Brian s second rally and Adam s first. They would have done better but they are engineers and over thought some things. I had told Brian about time delays and he tried to use them. He turned in two and one helped and one didn t. They ended up with 605 points on a fiveleg rally. They got a 17 on the last leg so they are learning and will be a team to contend with if they stay with the game. (continued on page 11)

10 The Witches Wail (Rally Notes continued from page 10) Warren Meyer and Stan Smith were 3 rd with 405 points. They had one max and a 63 for their high and low. This is a good team and along with Brian have a shot at class C in the MIDIV Regional Rally Series if they can travel to the out of town events. Brian, Warren, and Stan went to the Meet In The Middle. Judy and Keith Pfautz were 2 nd and as I said also worked as sweep. They got a 6 for their low score and an 84 for their high. They are in class A, but use no equipment at all so it can be done. The best the MIDIV has to offer made it down form up north to win the rally with a score of 170 (boy do I hate these guys). They turned in single digit scores for all but one control including a ZERO on the last leg. Leg three bit them and when I asked what had happened I found out they had missed a speed change that was on the control sheet. That had them driving 20 when everyone else was at 33. (It s good to know they are human once and awhile.) I want to thank all the teams that came out. But most of all I want to thank all the workers. It was a good event and you all did a great job. The only errors that were caught (if they aren t caught I say they weren t there) were those of the rally master when he left the control slips for legs four and five in the trunk of the car with out telling the driver of that car CABIN FEVER IROC By Bruce Bettinger What is we held an event any nobody came? Well I almost found out. This years Cabin Fever IROC was held on the best day we had had weather wise for some time. In fact if I had not been the chairman of the event I probably would stayed home doing one of the many projects on a neverending list. The thing I like about the IROC is the forming of teams. Trying to team the hot shoes with the boat anchors. That way the hot shoes can help the anchors get better and the anchors can keep the shoes from running away with the event. We ended up with eleven entrants so we could have set up six teams of two with a little armtwisting or we could run with each entrant by them selves. The solo run was the way we went this year. The interesting thing this sets up is the set out. The track will hold eight cars at a time and the program that runs scoring will handle twelve or in our case eleven. So three drivers sit out and one comes in after the first heat and one that is running sits out. Every one still drives all eight lanes and all eight cars. The thing is the sit out makes it hard to figure out just where you are on the scoring board. You can be way ahead, but have three heats to sit out and have to hope to have a big enough lead to hold up, cause there is no more chances to do anything but pray. The position I like best is to sit out the first three and then work from behind to climb up through the pack. That s better than sweating it out. The sit outs did give us enough people to be corner marshals along with Scott Bettinger and Lee Woods and with the way we drive the track they were sure needed. Actually this year we did pretty well as I didn t see the spares on the track very much and the cars looked like they could be used as rentals later. Some years I have given you a heat by heat play back of the event, but this year I ll try to hit just the high spots. 11th Katelyn Timmons: Andy s daughter so she should have the genes as Andy is one of the shoes. Well it must be a learned skill as she did well, but did not shine. I think that this may have been her first time on the track and I know it was here first time in this event so she did well. 172 laps. 10th David Guilliams: Or G W as he is now know by his slot car buddies was out for the second time and it showed. He can claim the overall fastest lap with a time of He can claim it and the printout will support his claim, but as the next best times were in the 5+ area it is suspect. 174 laps 9th Rob Foster: Rob has run several times, but. He did make it to 4th and held it for a time. 185 laps. (continued on page 12)

11 (2006 Cabin Fever IROC continued from page 11) 8th Kevin Kruse: Kevin ran last year and made a point of being here this year. Big deal you say? Well yes it is as he is here from Texas. He got as high as 2nd for a while and turned in some good times, but he is from Texas. 190 laps. 7th Steve Schrag: He came in with Bill if that tells you anything. He did make up to 2 nd and set fast time in heats 5 and 7 (if we throw G W s bogus time). 192 laps 6th Bill Preheim: I will not say anything bad about Bill. If you have seen what he drives anything I could say would be redundant. Bill set no records. He did get up to 3rd, but then sat out and it was all down hill then. 201 laps. 5th Dave Geis: Our R.E. Our leader. Not on the slot car track. Dave did climb to 2nd and set the most laps in heat laps. 4th David Voth: He has been to several of these events and it shows. He did not set records for time or lap count, but was right there almost every heat. 212 laps. 3rd Mark Braun: Mark is one of the real hot shoes, but I think he sand bags this race planning to then clean up I we have a race after for the big bucks. He set high count in heats 1, 9, and 10 while setting fast time in the same heats. 219 laps. 2nd Gary Marchi: An other person brought in by Bill, however here was a ringer. He took over 1st in heat 3 and held it through heat 10 even while sitting out heats 9 and 10. He set high lap count for heats 5, 6, and 8 while setting fastest time for heats 5 and laps. 1st Andrew Timmons: Well this sure makes a Timmons bookend of this race. Andy has done this sport with the big boys for sometime and to be beat by him is no disgrace. He started out 1st for heats 1 and 2 then sat out and dropped to 9th, but what a climb back through the pack. He had high lap count in heats 1, 2, 9, and 11. He set fast time in heats 2 and laps. Well that s it for another year. I want to thank the Woods family for opening Rebel Raceway on their day off. Gary Woods who set up all the cars (frame, body and motor). Scott normally helps, but could not this year (building a real racecar or two). If I can get some bad weather and you want it watch for next year.
