New Zealand MESSAGE FROM SPECIAL OLYMPICS NEW ZEALAND S CEO WELCOME from Special Olympics New Zealand Soaring to new heights WE ARE thrilled to welcome you to the eighth Special Olympics New Zealand National Summer Games in Dunedin. Having observed the active training and competition that our athletes have undertaken over the last four years it is a real privilege to be able to see them finally reaching their pinnacle to represent their Club and local community here in the deep south. Thank you very much for attending the Special Olympics New Zealand National Summer Games 2013 to support our athletes. It would not be possible for us to stage an event of this size and scale without your incredible support. On behalf of our athletes, teams, volunteers and the Games Organising Committee, our sincere thanks for your valuable input. Special Olympics New Zealand has no membership fee to join and is open to competitors of all ages and ability levels. The focus is individual effort and striving to achieve personal best performances. While participation in sport assists our athletes in developing skills and confidence, we should never underestimate the impact that sport plays in enabling positive health and well-being. Also important is the fun and friendship that our athletes love as part of their sports competition. The athletes taking part in Dunedin have qualified in their chosen sport through participation in training and through competitions held locally and regionally over the last 12 months. They have been supported by many dedicated and passionate coaches, many of whom have also travelled to Dunedin to be part of the Club and School teams. This event is held every four years and our athletes are extremely excited to be taking part. Please enjoy your experience with Special Olympics New Zealand. It is a real pleasure having you with us in Dunedin for this event. KATHY GIBSON Chief Executive Officer 2 NATIONAL SUMMER GAMES 2013

DUNEDIN host city WHEN THE John Wickliffe and the Philip Laing sailed from London and Glasgow in 1847 with the first immigrants ready to build a city and a province for themselves, they found a stunning harbour settlement at the head of Otago Dunedin. Here immigrants found fertile soils, wooded hills and an abundance of wild life especially birds and wild pigs. By the 1850s, 12,000 immigrants had arrived and Dunedin was a bustling town. In the early 1860s, gold was discovered and the rush was on making Dunedin the richest and most populace province in the country, encouraging people from China and around the world to share in the wealth of the area. Today Dunedin is the main centre of, and the gateway to, the Otago region. Population 123,000 (student population 25,000). Dunedin is New Zealand s largest city by area and arguably the most spectacular in terms of contrasting landscapes. From New Zealand s largest city by population, to the largest city by area, Dunedin has always held a prominent position in our country. The city has always recognised the importance of its heritage and this can be found in the original architecture and prominence of memorials both to our fallen soldiers and to our pioneering forebears. QUIRKY DUNEDIN FACTS Dunedin is the world s fifth largest city in geographical size Dunedin is the Celtic name for Edinburgh. The only mainland breeding colony of the Northern Royal Albatross, large majestic seabirds with a wingspan of thee metres, is at the Otago Peninsula. Dunedin s Baldwin Street is the steepest street in the world. Larnach Castle, located on the Otago Peninsula, is New Zealand s only castle. Dunedin Railway Station is the most photographed building in New Zealand. University of Otago, New Zealand s oldest university was the first in the country to admit women to all its classes. It is also the South Island s largest employer. Otago Girls High School was one of the first state run secondary schools for girls in the world. New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame is, in effect, New Zealand s national sports museum, the only one of its kind in the country. New Zealand s first authentic Chinese Garden - only the third outside of China and the first in the Southern Hemisphere is found in Dunedin. Your Information Pack includes a Dunedin A-Z Visitor Guide and Dining Guide showing you how to make the most of your time in Otago. For more information on what to see and do in Dunedin, visit i-site Dunedin Visitor Information Centre,26 Princes Street (just South of the Octagon). NATIONAL SUMMER GAMES

SPECIAL OLYMPICS history EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER FOUNDER OF SPECIAL OLYMPICS BORN IN Brookline, Massachusetts, the fifth of nine children of Joseph P Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, Eunice received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Stanford University, California. Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a sister of President John F Kennedy. In 1963 Mrs Shriver started a summer day camp for children and adults with intellectual disabilities at her home in Maryland, focusing on physical activities and sports. In 1968 Special Olympics began and the first Special Olympics Games were held in Chicago. In 1988 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) signed an agreement officially endorsing and giving recognition to Special Olympics. Special Olympics is an unprecedented global movement involving three million athletes and many more supporters which, through quality sports training and competition, improves the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and, in turn, the lives of everyone they touch. Special Olympics empowers people with intellectual disabilities to realise their full potential and develop their skills through yearround sports training and competition. As a result, Special Olympics Athletes become fulfilled and productive members of their families and the communities in which they live. Today, Special Olympics stands as a world leader in the field of intellectual disability and has sharpened the focus on its mission as not just nice, but critical, not just as a sports organisation for people with intellectual disabilities, but also as an effective catalyst through sport for social change. Children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics exhibit courage and enthusiasm, enjoy the rewards of friendship and ultimately discover not only new abilities and talents but their voices as well. NATIONAL SUMMER GAMES

SPECIAL OLYMPICS New Zealand SPECIAL OLYMPICS New Zealand was founded in 1983 by Grant Quinn, he and his wife Wendy were introduced to Special Olympics and took the first New Zealand team (four swimmers) to the 1983 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. The first New Zealand National Games were held in 1985 at Lower Hutt. Incorporated in 1985 as a registered Charitable Trust, Special Olympics New Zealand is governed by a Board of Trustees volunteering their time and expertise. The organisation is licensed by Special Olympics International to operate in New Zealand. It is a unitary sports organisation consisting of a single legal entity operating nationally, regionally and locally. 6 NATIONAL SUMMER GAMES 2013

WHAT IS Special Olympics? SPECIAL OLYMPICS logo THE CURRENT Special Olympics logo has evolved since its creation in 1968; the logo consisted of a single figure (similar to the one in the centre front). The original logo designed by graphic designer Raymond Loewy, was designed to convey the impression of movement, play and activity. The figure is a symbol of growth, confidence and joy. Over time multiple figures arranged in a circle were added to convey the growth of Special Olympics and the fact it is a global movement. ATHLETES OATH Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt These words were spoken by Roman Gladiators entering the arena. The athletes recite the oath at the Opening Ceremony of each competition to remind everyone, themselves included that they are part of a brave tradition and that the goal is to compete to the best of their ability. NATIONAL SUMMER GAMES

HEALTHY ATHLETES Programme THE SPECIAL Olympics International Healthy Athletes Programme, Opening Eyes, Healthy Hearing, Special Smiles, and Fit Feet will operate for the duration of the Games. It is an established fact that the health needs of this group are going undetected and untreated. Clinicians from the field of Optometry will coordinate free health screening of the athlete s eyes, Audiologists will screen their ears and hearing, Dentists will look at the oral health and Podiatrists will check their feet and biomechanics. Lions Club International is a sponsor of the Opening Eyes Programme. The main base for the programme will be the Edgar Centre, however screenings will also occur at Moana Pool and Bowl Line. 8 NATIONAL SUMMER GAMES 2013
