5 George Stothart Basketball Referee for 60+ years Fast Facts Born in Ottawa Father went to World War II 9 grandchildren involved in many sports football, fastball, athletics and basketball involved at the Canadian Deaf Basketball team at 1965 World Games for the Deaf refereed a game with former Edmonton mayor Stephen Mandel when he was younger, about 20 years ago Why did you want to be an referee? Father was a referee Watched and really loved how his father was refereeing all the games Started volunteering at 14 with intramural games and began working for money at 15 at his first referee game in Red Deer What is it about basketball that you love? Used to compete in athletics so the running back and forth during basketball was easy and loved being able to combine athletics and basketball in one What are the qualities that you need to have for this position? Start young Be sure to be involved in the specific sport know how to play, the rules and etc Follow the LTAD best way to be a good referee Referee exams every year always new rules following national and international events What do you like the least about being an referee? Arguments and complaints from players What do you enjoy the most about being an referee? Not being able to hear all the swearing and fighting so can stay neutral Ability to control the game Teach others how to communicate with deaf people Good exercise What advice would you give our youth who are interested in being an referee? Study hard Watch the higher level games like universities, etc Watch how the referees move Notice how 3 referees work together always opposite of other referees, taking turns to balance the game Know the game, play the game. 5
