8 Alder Growth and Yield Modeling Co-operative Current Status And Plans (adapted from Barri Herman)
9 Red Alder Growth and Yield Modeling Rationale Expanded acceptance of red alder as both a tree crop as well as an important biodiversity component in stands New environmental constraints on harvesting riparian areas Perceived increase in value of red alder versus Douglas fir or hybridpoplar have been strong Information exists relating to silvicultural practices for stand establishment and tending But the most notable technological gap is the lack of a good growth and yield simulator for forecasting future yields of managed red alder stands (both intensively managed red alder plantations and mixed species stands) Having this capacity is critical to assessing the potential value of silvicultural investments and making decisions to manage forest-land
10 Red Alder Growth and Yield Modeling Concern that there is no freely available, high quality growth and yield model for red alder There is a need for a growth and yield model(s) that handles both pure and mixed species stands (e.g, Douglas fir and red alder mix and mixed species in riparian zones) In addition, there is a need to have the capability to link the growth and yield model to other analysis programs that can help landowners evaluate the financial implications of regime options, etc.. There have been several agencies, companies, and cooperatives that have collected data on red alder culture and stand management This effort is to gather all the interested parties and compile the scattered data into a coherent data base that can be used to construct the growth and yield model

15 Current and Future Plans The Data contributing members have agreed on the data available The SMC has created a protocol for data submission format to facilitate transfer to the data base. A preliminary database design, based on the existing SMC database has been developed The SMC will request the data be sent from the cooperators by the end of June 2003 Partial funding, $15k of an estimated $30-32k, for SMC to complete the database effort has been provided by CMER The data will be compiled into a coherent, consistent database set by the end of 2003 Once compiled into a coherent data set the information will be used to create a public Red Alder Growth and Yield model
