2 Bombala Bike Show From Cheryl Cottrill, the Bombala Bike Show Secretary we ve received the following The 25th annual Bombala Bike Show will be held on Saturday 19th November from 10am till midnight. With over 35 food and trade stalls, live music, a show'n'shine competition, burnout & loudest bike comps, a motorbike gymkhana event and loads more. For more information you can contact Cheryl on her mobile at : or visit the following websites: and Southern Triples Rally The fifth Southern Triples Rally will be hosted by organisers Gerry Rowley, Geoff Kemp, Stephen & Joanne Kelly and Steve Cramp down in beautiful South Australia. If past rallies are anything to go by this should be a terrific event. The location is full of tarsealed roads ideal for motorcycle riding. This rally will be headquartered at the historic German town of Harndorf with accommodation available at the local Big 4 holiday park. The rally is scheduled for 10th 12th March If you d like to participate it s suggested that you get your accommodation sorted quickly by telephoning Of course there are plenty of other accommodation options in the area but you ll have to find those yourself. 3 Our 21st Rally went off beautifully with 139 registered entries by the start of day 2. Without a doubt, the Friday run was the best ever. That afternoon jaunt has really taken off and there were about 100 participants. The weather was ideal though a little warm with Friday then Saturday getting steadily warmer up to a high of about 36 o C at Taylors Arms where the lunch and judging took place. A cold beer was needed to cool many a parched throat! Thankfully Sunday was considerably cooler and quite a few riders enjoyed the short ride looping around the rivers before finishing with a BBQ at Hat Head. A pat on the back to all the club members who worked so diligently in organising the event. It all went off without a hitch, if you don t count the stuff up at the dinner on the Saturday night which was completely out of our control. A slide show has been uploaded to the club website with photos taken by Norma Flint and Rod Smart. It s was a quick production because Norma is away for the rest of November and early December so it s quite likely that once she returns it ll be changed. However, at least you get to see something of the rally in the meantime. 6 Many Thanks Rod for the great pictures! Change of venue for Taree Rally Ken Hoad has informed us that the Taree Rally is changing it s headquarters! He did announce it our rally but here are the details again in case you missed that. It will be over 4 days from 2-5 March 2017 with the rides on Thursday and Friday being older bike friendly. Others are however, most welcome to join the rides. The rally will be based at Happy Hallidays Caravan Park on Blackhead Road at Diamond Beach. All types of accommodation is available there. 7 What is this bike? It s an endangered species Norma Papworth handed a magazine to David featuring a bike that is quite rare, one that you may not have heard about, or seen. Here is a shortened article from a 1995 edition of Early Riders for your edification. What you see here is a 1927 McEvoy, a motorcycle so rare that this is one of only two still in existence. It is owned by John Stears who casually mentioned to a colleague his fascination with the all-but-extinct McEvoy motorcycle. This remark led him to meeting Michael McEvoy himself who owned but a single example of his design genius, a 980cc, overhead valve V-twin, built in The motorcycle was little more than a pitiful, halfdismantled heap, but John eagerly agreed to McEvoy s suggestion that they restore the bike together. Sadly, Michael died shortly after but John continued with the restoration. The result was this scrupulously restored classic, as clean and road worthy as the day it rolled out of the factory in Derby, England. Only one other is known to exist at the National Motor Museum in Birmingham, England. Although the bike received extensive refurbishing, the model KTOR/I engine, designed by the legendary J. Arthur Prestwich (JAP) required only a new set of BSA Gold Star pistons and liners. By the way, each character in the KTOR/I designation corresponds to one of the bike s specifications. The K signifies a displacement of approximately 1,000cc. The T indicates a V-twin (a 50-degree V in this case). The O stands for overhead valve design. The R signifies the racing model. And the I is the code for the year of manufacture. The restoration project involved casting a new case for the primary, restoring the black, red and gold paint job and fabricating a complete, new sidecar. John decided he needed a sidecar s third wheel on the ground after a skid on the way to a sprint meet left him underneath a car, shaken but uninjured. The car driver turned out to be his own brother on his way to the same meet! Today, the bike turns heads as John navigates the winding canyons about Malibu, California where he lives. The only complaint John has is that he must endure a relentless, teeth-rattling hammering from the bike s rigid suspension, while his passenger ride in comfort protected from the pounding by the sidecar s large coil springs.
