6 Vanderbilt WBB Storylines Second Year Under Coach White Coach White looks to take the Commodores to higher heights in her second year. The Commodores return 77.5 percent of their scoring from a year ago and added some height to the roster, with four players checking in at over 6-4 or taller. Bree Horrocks, Blessing Ejiofor and Mariella Fasoula lead the way registering at 6-5 while Paige Warren checks in at 6-4. Shooters Touch Last year, the Commodores were ranked among the nation s best in three-point field goal percentage. Vanderbilt closed the season ranked No. 6 nationally, shooting at a.386 clip from long range while leading the SEC in triples per game with 7.1 per game. Youth Movement The Commodores will be very young with just four upperclassmen on the roster this season in Rachel Bell, Myka Dancy, Christa Reed and graduate transfer Bree Horrocks. In total, of Vanderbilt s 14 players just seniors Bell, Dancy and Reed have donned the Black and Gold for more than a year. Summer International Experience This summer several Commodores got international experience. Sophomore Kayla Overbeck spent some time with USA Basketball s Women s U19 team that competed for World Cup in July, winning a silver medal while transfer Mariella Fasoula played on the Greek national team that advanced to the semifinals of the FIBA European Championships and also played on Greece s U20 FIBAS team at the FIBA Under 20 European Championships. 25th Anniversary of 1993 Final Four Team This season marks the 25th Anniversary of the 1993 Vanderbilt team that went to the NCAA Final Four. Vanderbilt, under the direction of Jim Foster, reached the Final Four for the first and only time in program history and were a No. 1 seed out of the SEC. Vanderbilt defeated Cal, Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Tech en route to the Final Four in Atlanta They were defeated by eventual national champion, Texas Tech. The Commodores will commemorate this team throughout the season. The Commodores will celebrate that team the weekend of Feb. 3-4 when they take on Tennessee in Memorial Gym. Purdue Connection Several members of the the Vanderbilt coaching staff are connected through Purdue University and the 1999 National Championship. Current Vanderbilt head coach Stephanie White, associate head coach Carolyn Peck and assistant Kelly Komara are all a part of the 1999 Purdue women s basketball team that won the national championship. Peck, was the head coach while White and Komara were teammates on that team. They are reunited on the Vanderbilt sideline in and as White said She helped us win a championship for our alma mater, and we would like to help her do the same her at Vanderbilt. Peck is a 1988 Vanderbilt graduate and member of the women s basketball team. Additionally, graduate transfer Bree Horrocks comes to Vanderbilt from Purdue. We Be Jamming The Dores will head to the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in November. This will be the first time Vanderbilt has played a regular-season game outside of the continental US since a trip to Puerto Rico in 2012 for the Puerto Rico Shootout in San Juan. The Commodores will play George Washington (Nov. 23), Syracuse (Nov. 24) and Wisconsin (Nov. 25) in the 19th annual Paradise Jam.
