When she arrived in Nashville, White inherited a young Vanderbilt team that featured only two seniors and relied heavily on five freshmen. White guided the Commodores to a overall record in her first season with the team, including a 4-12 mark in the SEC during the campaign. White s inaugural season on West End featured plenty of highlights, and was capped by a late-season surge that saw the Commodores win three of their final five games of the regular season. Other highlights included: * The Commodores were ranked among the nation s top-5 in 3-point percentage throughout the season, and finished the season ranked No. 6 after shooting 38.6 for the year. She took the Fever to the playoffs in each of her two seasons, including a trip to the WNBA finals in The opportunity to lead Vanderbilt s women s basketball program is an opportunity that I simply could not pass up, White said at her introductory press conference. The combination of Vanderbilt s culture, where achievement -- both on and off the court - is so highly valued, together with the institution s fan support, and a legacy of winning basketball to build upon, is incredibly exciting to me. I appreciate the support and understanding that I have received from the Indiana Fever, from management to the players, regarding my passion to coach college basketball at an elite institution. As a collegiate player, White enjoyed a highly successful career at Purdue, where she earned national Player of the Year honors after helping lead the Boilermakers to the 1999 NCAA championship as a senior. That season, she also received the Wade Trophy (given to the nation s top female player) and was named Big Ten Conference Player of the Year. Stephanie White has been a winner in every phase of her career, Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams said. She was the nation s high school player of the year, she was the NCAA s Player of the Year on a national championship team and she led her WNBA team into the finals in her first year. She was an outstanding scholar. She wants to coach at Vanderbilt and we believe she is just the person to lead our program back into national prominence. In-Season Birthdays Erin Whalen Nov. 14 (Gameday) Autumn Newby Dec. 27 Chelsie Hall Jan. 12 Myka Dancy Jan. 19 What People Are Saying About Vanderbilt On the development of the program... They are building. They are what we were 10 years ago In the next year or two they will be hard to deal with because they will be seasoned in the league. -Dawn Staley South Carolina Head Coach On the Commodores Youth... The players that she has right now, they re getting it they re just really young. It s hard to win basketball games with a young team. We re experiencing that a little bit now, because we have to play a lot of young players. But they grow up. They grow up. This team, this Vanderbilt team, in the next year or two, they re going to be hard to deal with, because they ll be seasoned in this league. And the schedule that they play is going to help them in the long run. It s just hard to see it right now. -Dawn Staley South Carolina Head Coach On Chelsie Hall... I ll be honest, she burned us in Knoxville and she s gotten better. She s been a great leader for (Vandy), too. That s what you want, regardless if she s a freshman or not. She s put this team on her shoulders and she s handled it really well. -Holly Warlick Tennessee Head Coach On Vanderbilt... I truly belive their talent is as good as five other teams in this league. What they need to do is get the chemistry piece together because they have the talent. Freshman Chelsie Hall is one of the best freshman in this league and if Chennedy Carter isn t here, she may be SEC Freshman of the Year. She s pretty special. -Gary Blair Texas A&M Head Coach AP Top 25 (Week 15) TEAM RECORD PTS 1.
