Victoria Vivians 63 are fifth in league history for a rookie. With two games to play, each is just a hot streak from challenging the WNBA rookie standard of 76, held jointly by Crystal Robinson (1999) and Tamika Catchings (2002). 130 NEW WNBA RECORD Total 3FGs by Kelsey Mitchell (67) & Victoria Vivians (63) are a new WNBA 3-point field goals record by a rookie tandem. Just as the Fever began the season with a backto-back weekend and three of their first four games against the Sky and Mystics, so too shall Indiana close its season with a back-to-back weekend and three games against Chicago and Washington. Prior to Wednesday s loss to the Mystics, Indiana had not seen either club since May 24 when the Fever fell to the Mystics for the second time in five days. The Fever are 2-4 since the All-Star Break. Indiana s recent two-game win streak was its first since June 15 and 18, 2017, at home against Atlanta and at Chicago. The Fever led Washington through three quarters Wednesday night, shooting 42 percent overall and 3-of-10 from 3-point range. But in the fourth, the Mystics took advantage of eight Indiana misses from beyond the arc and outscored the Fever 18-2, for a win. Natalie Achonwa paced Indiana with 15 points and Candice Dupree became the ninth player in league history with 6,000 career points. At New York on Aug. 4, it was Indiana that outscored the Liberty 17-2 in the fourth quarter. Wednesday, it was the Fever on the down side of an 18-2 margin. Both matched the second-fewest points ever scored in the fourth quarter of any WNBA game. Ten Indiana 3-pointers were not enough to get past Las Vegas 46 percent shooting and a rebounding edge, as Indiana lost in the Nevada desert. Erica Wheeler paced the Fever with 13 points and Kelsey and Tiffany Mitchell both added 11. Tiffany Mitchell was perfect on three attempts beyond the arc, Wheeler also made three 3-pointers and rookies Kelsey Mitchell and Victoria Vivians each made two. The Fever is the first WNBA team ever to have a pair of rookies both eclipse 60 3-point field goals. Similarly, the Fever is the seventh club in league history with a pair of players to eclipse 60 3FGs. Indiana is within reach of becoming the second WNBA team ever with two players reaching 70 3-pointers. With Indiana s triumph over Dallas, 8/2, the Fever have beaten the current No. 2 (Atlanta), No. 5 (Los Angeles), No. 7 (Minnesota) and No. 8 (Dallas) teams in the WNBA standings, with two of them on the road. All five Fever victories have come while holding opponents below 80 points. Prior to Wednesday s loss, Indiana was 4-0 during 18 games since June 24 when opponents fail to reach 87 points; and 0-14 in all remaining games. Since June 24, opponents topped 90 points nine times. Candice Dupree is three points shy passing Lauren Jackson (6,007) as the eighth-leading scorer in league annals. Kelsey Mitchell (3) or Victoria Vivians (4) have made five 3-pointers on seven occasions. The Fever rookie record is six by Tamika Catchings (7/3/02) and the WNBA rookie standard is seven by Crystal Robinson (7/24/99). Prior to 2018, a Fever rookie made five or more 3-pointers just nine times in 18 seasons. L, All times ET Series Notes Indiana began the 2018 season with a home date against the Sky on May 19, and ends the campaign with home and road dates on consecutive days against Chicago. Both clubs have played 31 games in between seeing each other. Indiana has beaten Chicago in 18 of 25 meetings in Indianapolis, though Chicago has won two straight games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, counting an Aug. 4 decision late in A Chicago win on Saturday would mark only the second time the Sky have ever won two road games in the I-65 series in the same season (Chicago swept a four-game series in 2015). Conversely, Indiana has won its last three road games at Chicago and boasts a 16-8 record all-time on the road against the Sky. The Fever and Sky both are playing with a pair of rookie first-round draft picks, with Indiana selecting at No. 2 (Kelsey Mitchell) and No. 8 (Victoria Vivians) last April; and Chicago with consecutive picks at No. 3 (Diamond DeShields) and No. 4 (Gabby Williams). A quick stats comparison shows Mitchell starting 17 of 32 games and averaging 12.8 points for Indiana, with Vivians starting 24 of 32 and scoring at an 8.8-point clip. For the Sky, DeShields has started 31 of 32 contests with 13.7-point scoring. Williams has started 28 of 32 games and averages 7.3 points per game. Sky scoring leader Allie Quigley had a short, three-game stint with the Fever in 2010, before signing a free agent deal with her hometown Sky. She has since become a two-time All-Star and the WNBA s two-time 3-point contest shooting champion. Playing the Sky always is a homecoming of sorts for the Indiana coaching staff headed by Pokey Chatman. Chatman was Chicago s head coach and GM for six seasons from Assistant coach Christie Sides was at her side for each of those seasons. Assistant coach Jessie Miller was a four-year starter at nearby UIC, and was Chatman s video coordinator with the Sky in 2015 and When the Fever visit Wintrust Arena for the first time on Sunday evening, it marks the third first-time arena at which Indiana has played this season. The Sky s new homecourt will be the 34th different arena at which the Fever have ever played. Other new venues in 2018 included Westchester County Center (New York) and Mandalay Bay Events Center (Las Vegas).

Prior to the acquisition of Cappie Pondexter, only three players on Indiana s roster (Candice Dupree, Kayla Alexander and Shenise Johnson) had more than three years of WNBA experience. Following a July 22 loss at Las Vegas, the Fever were eliminated from 2018 playoff competition, its second straight season out of the playoffs. Next steps? Planning and preparation to keep getting better, of course! Based on this season s record plus last season s 9-25 record, Indiana already is assured of top odds during the upcoming draft lottery. (Indiana s two-year record will include no more than 16 wins.) WAY TOO EARLY TO TALK EARLY DRAFT CANDIDATES? Yes, probably. But for sake of curiosity and because we ve been asked, some very unofficial research was conducted. Two different way too early 2019 mock drafts already on the Internet revealed some consistent top prospects. For sake of conversation, here is a look at some top U.S. college seniors, in alphabetical order, three months prior to the start of the season: Top Prospects: Kalani Brown, 6-7, C, Baylor; Napheesa Collier, 6-1, F, Connecticut; Asia Durr, 5-10, G, Louisville; Megan Gustafson, 6-3, F, Iowa; Kitija Laksa, 6-0, F, South Florida; Teaira McCowan, 6-7, C, Mississippi State; Arike Ogunbowale, 5-8, G, Notre Dame; Katie Lou Samuelson, 6-3, G/F, Connecticut; Jessica Shepard, 6-4, F, Notre Dame. Honorable Mention: Kristine Anigwe, 6-4, C, California; Alexis Jennings, 6-3, F, South Carolina; Marina Mabrey, 5-11, G, Notre Dame. CANDICE & CAPPIE: CHART-CLIMBING ALL-STARS Acquired via a three-team trade from Phoenix in February 2017, Candice Dupree served as the Fever s lone veteran leader through May and June this season. Last year, she became the fourth different player in club history to average at least 15.0 points per game over a full season, joining Tamika Catchings (11 times), Katie Douglas (four times) and Tamika Whitmore (2006). She averaged 15.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game to lead Indiana in Currently, she averages 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Dupree is a six-time All-Star who was the No. 6 pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft. She now is joined by the No. 2 pick in the same draft, seven-time All-Star Cappie Pondexter, who inked a free agent deal with the Fever on July 1. Together, they were the cornerstones of a three-team trade on March 30, 2010, that sent Pondexter from Phoenix to New York; Catherine Kraayveld and Shameka Christon from N.Y. to Chicago; and Dupree from Chicago to Phoenix. Former USA Basketball teammates with Pokey Chatman as an assistant coach (World University Games, 2005), now they are professional teammates for the first time. Pondexter averages 9.9 points in 15 games with the Fever, reaching double-figure scoring nine times. Games Points Rebounds 1. Former Notre Dame star Natalie Ace Achonwa has had a resurgent 2018, her second year in the Fever starting lineup. She currently averages 9.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest, easily the finest season of her fouryear career with increases over last year (7.1 ppg, 3.7 rpg) of 2.7 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Through July and among players with at least three years WNBA experience, Achonwa joined Natasha Howard (Seattle) and Cheyenne Parker (Chicago) as the league s only players with increases of more than 2.5 points and 2.5 rebounds from Howard and Achonwa were the only players with increases of more than 3.0 in both categories. She just missed another at Atlanta, 6/14, finishing with 10 points and nine boards; again at Minnesota, 7/3, with 17 points and nine caroms; and at Los Angeles, 7/20, with 15 points and nine rebounds. She is the fifth different player in Fever history to collect at least five double-doubles in a season: Single-Season Double-Doubles in Fever History Tamika Catchings, Tamika Catchings, Natalie Achonwa, Tamika Catchings, Tamika Catchings, 2013; 2009; Tammy Sutton-Brown, Tamika Catchings, Erlana Larkins, Natalie Williams, Erlana Larkins, Tamika Catchings, Tamika Catchings, Natalie Williams, KELSEY S CAMPAIGN With the second pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft, the Indiana Fever selected one of the most prolific scorers in college basketball history in Ohio State guard Kelsey Mitchell. The Fever s No. 2 pick matched their highest selection in franchise history. After scoring only five points on 2-for-9 shooting in her WNBA debut against Chicago, 5/19, Mitchell scored 167 points over her next eight outings - a 20.9 points per game average. Mitchell scored 20 points against Los Angeles, 5/22, and followed that with 25 points against Washington, 5/24, to become the first Fever rookie since 2003 to score 20+ points in consecutive games. Her 25 points tied the seventh-highest scoring total by a Fever rookie, and was the most by a first-year Fever player since She scored 26 in consecutive games against New York, 6/2, and Dallas, 6/8; and again vs. Seattle, 7/24, and at Phoenix, 8/10. Mitchell reached the 100-point mark in her sixth career game against New York, 6/2. Only six players in WNBA history have reached 100 points in fewer than six games (Ruthie Bolton, 1997; Nikki McCray, 1998; Tamika Catchings, 2002; Seimone Augustus, 2006; Cappie Pondexter, 2006; A ja Wilson, 2018). Named as a participant in the WNBA All-Star Game Three-Point Shooting Contest, Mitchell currently averages 12.8 points per game. Her 67 3-pointers are the third-highest figure in league history among first-year players. TORI S SCORING Not to be outdone on the rookie scoring and 3-point ladder is the No. 8 pick in last year s WNBA Draft, former Mississippi State star Victoria Vivians. Starting slower than 3-point partner Kelsey Mitchell, Vivians did not eclipse 20 points until June 16 and her 63 3-pointers, fifth in WNBA history by a rookie, trail Mitchell s total. She entered the starting lineup 24 games ago and averages 8.8 points per game overall, with highs of 21 against Atlanta, 6/16; 25 at Connecticut, 6/27; and a career-high 27 against the Dream, 7/1. Her 27 points against the Dream represented the most points by a Fever rookie not named Catchings; and matched Catchings for the fourth-highest rookie scoring figure in club history. Four times, she has registered five 3-pointers and she joins Kelsey Mitchell as the WNBA s most prolific 3-point shooting rookie tandem in history. Her five first-half 3-pointers against Seattle, 8/7, were one shy of Sami Whitcomb s rookie record of six in a half. She took over the point guard role last season to record 138 assists, the second most ever by a Fever player, and now ranks fifth among Indiana s all-time assist-makers. She also has shown flashes as an explosive scorer, including 33 points at New York on August 8, 2017, in which she tied the second-highest scoring total in franchise history with a career-best 12-for-18 shooting. She also tied a single-game franchise record with seven 3-pointers. She averaged 13.3 points and 4.5 assists per game after June 7 last season, and finished the year as one of just six WNBA stars to average over 11 points and four assists per game. This season, Wheeler entered training camp as the incumbent starter at point guard for the first time in her career. At Atlanta, 6/14, she dished a career-high 10 assists to become the sixth different player in Indiana history with 10+ assists in a single game. She currently averages 7.7 points and 4.2 assists. HIGH ACHIEVING UNDRAFTED FREE AGENT RARELY SEEN Erica Wheeler is only the second player to debut in the WNBA since 2007 and score 1,000 career points. She needs just seven assists to become only the sixth undrafted free agent in WNBA history to reach 1,000 career points and 400 career assists. Wheeler and Becky Hammon are the ONLY undrafted free agents in league history every to score at least 33 points in a single game. Wheeler s 10-assist game at Atlanta, 6/14, was just the seventh in WNBA history by an undrafted free agent: Hammon, Michelle Cleary, Edwige Lawson-Wade, Kiesha Brown, Annie Burgess and Coquese Washington. QUEEN AND PRINCESS They have nothing to do with basketball, but it s fun to note a couple personality monikers common among Indiana s rookie class. Presenting to the WNBA in 2018, both the QUEEN and the PRINCESS. Yes, these are real, embraced and accepted nicknames for young players whose personalities and reputations precede them. The Queen is Victoria Vivians, noted for her selection as the 2017 Homecoming Queen as a senior at Mississippi State. Queen Vivian was common nickname throughout the Bulldogs run through the NCAA Tournament last season. Her Twitter handle (@VictoriaVivians) has 14,000 followers. She is more casually known as just Tori. The Princess is Stephanie Mavunga. Her own Twitter account (@SMavunga_23) is titled as Princess StephMav. She adds an extra layer of lip gloss before TV interviews and her beaming personality almost always includes a smile and a witty jab. A native of suburban Indianapolis who was born in Zimbabwe before her family migrated to the U.S., she is the younger sister of another pro basketball star, Julian. Julian, who has twice played with the Indiana Pacers summer league team, is an overseas star in Japan and won a state title (2008) with the same Brownsburg High School at which Stephanie earned Indiana Miss Basketball honors (2013). Did we mention that Julian married former Fever star Jeanette Pohlen and that Gordon Hayward was the best man in the wedding? Indeed, Princess Steph is a princess among local hoops royalty. POSTSEASON STREAK SNAPPED AT 12 With Indiana s loss to Washington on Aug. 20 last season, the Fever were eliminated from playoff contention after 12 consecutive playoff berths. Last season marks only the seventh losing season in Fever franchise history, and only the third over the past 13 seasons. The Fever s 12 straight appearances ( ) set a WNBA record and was the second-longest active playoff streak among major American professional sports leagues entering the 2017 regular season. The San Antonio Spurs have made the playoffs in 20 consecutive seasons. Indiana s 12-year mark was longer than any playoff streak in NFL or MLS history, and shorter than only the Atlanta Braves (14) and New York Yankees (13) in MLB history. The Fever have reached the playoffs 13 times over the first 18 seasons in franchise history, tied for the third-most postseason appearances in WNBA history. FRANCHISE SUCCESS DESPITE THE LOSSES For 12 consecutive seasons, the Indiana Fever reached the playoffs and, inspired by the play and off-court interaction of star player Tamika Catchings, the franchise was regarded as a league leader in metrics measuring attendance, corporate partnership and fan engagement. Even despite mounting losses in 2018: - Indiana has maintained a proactive fan engagement level. Through June, Indiana ranked No. 3 in league marketing metrics that measure database growth, new social media followers, total engagement, video views and unique visitors. - Through July, Indiana remained near the top half of league attendance leaders (7th), with two of its top three home crowds coming well after the club fell into last place on the court. - What s more, Indiana s corporate partnership revenue ranks fourth in the WNBA. - The Fever remain among the league s most active teams in community circles including an annual bowling tournament which raised over $18,000 for the Fever Cares Fund in 2017; and an annual Breast Health Awareness Auction that has raised over $200,000 for breast cancer non-profits since its inception in DONOVAN COACHED FEVER S FIRST TEAM The Indiana Fever are deeply saddened by the loss of Anne Donovan, a legendary figure both on and off the basketball court and remembered specifically as the Fever s first coach. Anne Donovan meant a great deal to me, professionally, personally and to our franchise, said Kelly Krauskopf, President of the Fever and the only chief executive in franchise history. Krauskopf hired Donovan as the team s interim coach for its inaugural season in 2000 while general manager and head coach Nell Fortner concluded her stint as coach of the U.S. Olympic Women s Basketball Team. First and foremost, she was a personal friend of mine, added Krauskopf. I have lost a friend and someone who s had an impact on the basketball world, certainly with the Fever. She ll forever be part of our history. She s always been a part of our family.
