JOHN ARENA BIG TEN NETWORK TRACKWRESTLING MATCH POINTS WISCONSIN BADGERS Rankings (USA/INT): 10/10 Head Coach: Chris Bono Record at WIS: 6-0 Overall: Wisconsin is undefeated in dual meets on the season (6-0), their longest undefeated streak to start a season since winning their first seven duals in This week they travel to Columbus, Ohio to face No. 2 (NWCA) Ohio State in their second Big Ten dual of the season, and their highest ranked opponent yet. Chris Bono takes over for his first season as head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers. Bono joined Wisconsin after leading South Dakota State's program to a massive resurgence during his six-year tenure as head coach for the Jackrabbits. Six of Wisconsin's starters are new to the full-time starting lineup. Sophomore Evan Wick returns as the starter at 165 pounds. Wick was an All-American as a freshman last season after finishing 3rd at the NCAA Championships, and is ranked 2nd in the country this year. Junior Cole Martin (149) and senior Ryan Christensen (174) also return to the starting lineup this year after qualifying for the NCAA championships last season. Senior Jens Lantz (133) is the final returning starter. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES Rankings (USA/INT): 3/2 Head Coach: Tom Ryan Record at Nebraska: Sophomore Evan Wick is looking to improve on his 3rd place finish at the NCAAs last season. He is currently 2nd in the country. Sophomore Connor Brown (125) and junior Tristan Moran (141) both transferred to Wisconsin this season, from South Dakota State and Oklahoma State, respectively, and are locked in as starters for the Badgers this year. Last weekend was a successful one for the Badgers at the SIUE Cougar Clash. The team took second at the tournament despite only having nine wrestlers register team points with no one competing at 125 pounds. The team had four individual champions, the most of any team at the tournament, with Tristan Moran (141), Cole Martin (149), Evan Wick (165) and Trent Hillger (HWT) winning their respective titles. The most notable was at 149 pounds, as Martin upset the No. 11 wrestler Josh Maruca of Arizona State in the finals by a 2-0 decision to take home first place. Wisconsin's second Big Ten dual of the season is also their second road Big Ten dual of the season. Two weekends ago, the Badgers went to Lincoln and upset then-ranked No. 11 Nebraska. The Badgers hope to pull off another upset this Sunday. Freshman heavyweight Trent Hillger continues his meteoric rise up the rankings, coming in at No. 9 (Intermat), the highest of ranking of his young career, after his performance this weekend. A total of 14 ranked wrestlers will be competing in Sunday's dual across both teams, including four matchups of ranked oppponents. A lot of talent will be on display and plenty of exciting matches are guaranteed. 8 Chris Bono is set to usher in a new era of Wisconsin Wrestling, as he takes over as head of the program this season. Before taking over at Wisconsin, Bono has had a successful career both as a coach and as a wrestler. Bono s coaching career began immediately after his collegiate career ended, as he joined his alma mater Iowa State s coaching staff in 1997 as an assistant. In 2002 he was promoted to associate head coach for the Cyclones, and won the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Assistant Coach of the Year Award the same season. In 2005, Bono joined the Tennessee-Chattanooga Moccasins as an assistant and was promoted to head coach the following season. Bono spent three seasons as head coach at UTC, and during that time, the Mocs dominated the Southern Conference, winning the regular season and tournament championships in all three seasons, and never losing to a fellow conference opponent. The Mocs also had two All-Americans and 19 NCAA qualifiers during his tenure, had their highestever team finish at the NCAA Championships (20th) and the program s first-ever Top 10 ranking in In 2009, Bono rejoined Iowa State as associate head coach for one season, before leaving wrestling to work in the private sector. Bono worked with Stryker in South Carolina, where he was in charge of selling millions of dollars worth of medical supplies, which he attests helped him learn how to best run a wrestling program, instead of just coaching it. Bono s return to the wrestling world came with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits when he was hired as head coach in When he joined the team, SDSU was a bottom feeder in the Western Wrestling Conference, and there was the potential of the program being cut altogether due to budget restraints. Every season under Bono s watch South Dakota State improved. In his first year as head coach, the Jackrabbits went 5-12 overall and sent one wrestler to the NCAA Championships. The next season, SDSU went 6-8 and sent three wrestlers to the NCAA s. In , Bono led the Jackrabbits to a record of 11-8, their first season at or above.500 since The team also sent three wrestlers to the NCAA s in The season marked SDSU s switch to the competitive Big 12 conference, but that didn t faze Bono and the Jackrabbits, as they improved to 14-6 on the season and sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, a program best at the Division I level. In , South Dakota State went 14-5 and Bono had his first individual Big 12 champion, as Seth Gross took the title at 133 pounds, and the team finished third out of 10 teams overall. Five wrestlers went to the NCAA s this season, with two, Seth Gross and Alex Kocer, earning All-American honors. SDSU also finished 16th overall. In Bono s last season as head coach for the Jackrabbits, the team went 14-2 and finished 3rd out of the now 12 teams in the Big 12, with two individual title winners with Seth Gross (133) and Nate Rotert (197). Of the seven SDSU wrestlers at the NCAA s, three earned All-American honors, including a national championship for Seth Gross, the first national champion in any sport at South Dakota State in the Division I era. The Jackrabbits placed 12th overall as a team. Bono was also awarded with Big 12 Coach of the Year Honors. Bono joins the Badgers with an overall record of , 43 NCAA Qualifiers, seven All- Americans and one national champion as a head coach.

9 A FLORIDA LEGEND Bono began wrestling at the early age of five when he accompanied his older brother Ernie to his wrestling practice in Philadelphia. After his family relocated to Florida, Bono would go on to high school at The Bolles School, where he became a prep legend. After placing fourth in the state championship as a seventh grader, Bono was a three-time state champion and led the team to three-straight District Titles and the 1992 Class 2A State Wrestling Team Championship. Bono his finished his high school career with a record, the most wins of any Florida wrestler in history. He also competed in freestyle wrestling in high school, finishing as the Cadet National Runner-Up and was a Junior National All-American. COLLEGIATE DOMINANCE As a collegian at Iowa State, Bono had a prolific career, posting an overall record of over his four seasons, currently holding the fifth most wins for an individual wrestler in Iowa State history. After making the NCAA tournament in his freshman year in 1994, Bono racked up three All-American honors in 95, 96, and 97. In 1995, he finished fifth at the NCAA Championships. He earned an NCAA title at 150 pounds in 1996, and then finished runner-up in 1997 to close out his college career. His NCAA title was the first-ever for a Floridian at any weight class. Bono was also a two-time Big 12 conference champion during his career. Bono was a member of the 2018 Glen Brand Hall of Fame Class, which was established in 2002 to honor individuals who have made an impact on the sport of wrestling at the national level or in the state of Iowa. The hall recognizes nativeborn Iowans and those who made their impact while wrestling or coaching in Iowa, like Bono. THE NEXT LEVEL Bono s career as a wrestler did not end when he graduated from Iowa State.
