THE B1G STAGE WISCONSIN S REGULAR SEASON DUAL STARTERS WT. Name Ht. Yr Career Notes In a match that fans have been anticipating since the start of the season, No. 2 Connor Medbery and top-ranked Kyle Snyder of Ohio State lived up to the hype in the final bout of the Big Ten Championships at Indiana's Assembly Hall. Medbery's second-place title highlighted the final session for the Wisconsin wrestling team that finished in a tie for eighth place. After trailing 4-1 following the first period, Medbery held 2016 Olympian Synder scoreless in the second. One final escape and riding time handed Snyder the 8-5 decision in the battle of the undefeated. The second-place finish marked Medbery's best finish in the Big Ten tournament. However, the Badgers immediately turned the tides, winning the next five bouts. u Connor Medbery (HWT) had a standout performance for the Badgers, adding five points to the board with a 15-0 tech fall. The victory was Wisconsin's lone bonus-point win of the night. u In the second match, Hunter Ritter got the Badgers back on track. He came out strong with two takedowns in the first period and kept control throughout to finish the 5-4 decision. u Ricky Robertson (197) continued the Badgers successful rhythm starting with his first takedown in the first period. He attacked late in the second to take a 4-0 lead into the second period. He was taken down early in the third after escaping, but retaliated with a reversal at the last second to close the 7-2 decision. u The Badgers' winning ways continued through Medbery's win to defining decisions at 125 and 133 by Johnny Jimenez and Eli Stickley, respectively. u Andrew Crone ditched his "Comeback Crone" persona and attacked first for a 2-1 edge after the first period at 149. He slipped out of Trimble's grasp more than halfway through the second and then tacked another takedown. Trimble hit Crone with a reversal late in the third, but the Badger escaped and held off to clinch the 6-3 decision. u Seniors TJ Ruschell and Isaac Jordan both came away with victories at 157 and 165, respectively, -and secured the Wisconsin victory. 7 Wisconsin ends the season 7-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in non-conference duals. UW also improves to 3-5 against ranked teams and 3-2 at home duals this season. The Badgers ended the season with three-straight wins and tied their longest winning streak of the season. Ricky Robertson has won his last three after snapping a six-match losing skid. He finishes with 23 wins on the season and six dual wins. Cole Martin, Andrew Crone and Isaac Jordan started every single match this season in their respective weight classes. UW won eight out of 10 matches on the night against Michigan State, marking the fourth time Wisconsin has won five-or-more matches in a dual and also marking the most bouts won in a dual this season. For the second-straight year, UW ended Big Ten dual season with a win. The Badgers trumped Northwestern last season, Wisconsin improved to in the all-time series with Michigan State and in duals in Madison. Hunter Ritter claimed his third-straight victory over a Big Ten opponent with his 5-4 decision over MSU. Connor Medbery matched his career high for Big Ten wins in a season with nine. Evan Wick was named the No. 4 redshirt in the country by The Open Mat. He has compiled a 16-3 record with 15 bonus-point wins. TJ Ruschell was featured as one of the Big Ten Network s top matches of the week after upsetting the first top-10 opponent of his career in his thrilling 5-3 decision over No. 9 Jake Short of Minnesota. Junior Andrew Crone got back on track, clinching his first two conference wins of the season over Nebraska's Collin Purinton (10-7) and Minnesota's Carson Brolsma (13-3). After Isaac Jordan just hit the milestone the last time UW was in the Field House, another Badger is on the brink of hitting the 100-win mark in his career. Connor Medbery is sitting at 99 wins and has the potential to clinch his 100th career win in front of a home crowd on Friday night. The OSU dual began in a familiar place, starting at 165 pounds with the Buckeyes for the second year in a row. But this time it was a little different and a bit of a relief, as senior Isaac Jordan did not have to wrestle his Buckeye cousin, Bo, for the first time in two years. Bo moved up to the 174-pound weight class, pairing Isaac with fellow Ohio native Cody Burcher. Jordan took the win, 4-1, but it wasn't just any ordinary win. It was the 100th of his successful career. One of the Badgers' most riveting revelations of the night was the return of Johnny Jimenez after initially being redshirted. And the return did not disappoint as Jimenez upset No. 9 Jose Rodriguez with a 14-2 major decision. A total of six Badgers earned spots at the podium at the 54th-annual Midlands Championships. The Badgers finished in seventh place with 70.5 points. True freshman Evan Wick and junior Ricky Robertson had the highest placings for the Badgers, finishing in fourth place at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Senior Connor Medbery (heavyweight), Wisconsin's only semifinalist was forced to forfeit both of his matches due to illness and finished in sixth place. Cole Martin was also forced to forego his match in the consolation rounds due to illness in the second session. Five Badgers have five-or-more pins this season. Senior Isaac Jordan leads Wisconsin with six falls, while Connor Medbery, Mason Reinhardt, Eli Stickley and Ben Stone have tallied five. STICK IT TO 'EM: Wisconsin freshman Eli Stickley has recorded the most matches so far this season against other competitors with 35. The conference announced Medbery won the award in two consecutive weeks on Tuesday, making him the first Badger to win the award in back-to-back weeks. It is also just the second time in program history that Wisconsin has had weekly Big Ten honors two weeks in a row. The first time was in 2008 when Zach Tanelli and Kyle Massey garnered the accolade. Having already accumulated two Big Ten weekly honors in a single season, UW ties for second in program records for the most weekly praises in a season. PINNED YA AGAIN: Isaac Jordan has the most pins of any starter with six falls and the fastest fall in 0:38. Cole Martin has the second-most pins of any Badger this season with five falls. Ricky Robertson had a bonus-point win in all three of those duals. WINNING THE WOLFPACK: Ryan Christensen, Andrew Crone and Isaac Jordan each earned first-place finishes to lead the 17 members of the 11th-ranked Wisconsin wrestling team to a third-place team finish in the Wolfpack Open. POINT TAKEN: Isaac Jordan had the most points of any wrestler at the Wolfpack Open with 25 total points in the tournament. He was followed close behind by teammate Ryan Christensen who had 22.5 points and Ricky Robertson who had Both Andrew Crone and Connor Medbery had 19.0 points. 45 @BADGERWRESTLING NOTES HEAD COACH BARRY DAVIS Barry Davis begins his 23rd season officially at the helm of the Wisconsin wrestling program, but enters his 24th season as part of the Wisconsin wrestling program after serving as interim head coach during the season. Davis has an overall dual record of In the 2016 season, Davis coached junior Isaac Jordan to clinch his third All-America honor, second Big Ten championship and an NCAA runner-up finish at 165 pounds. The 2015 season saw Davis help sophomore Isaac Jordan earn his first Big Ten championship and second All-America honor. Davis also helped sophomore Ryan Taylor and junior Connor Medbery to claim their first All-America honors. Under Davis, three of the seven NCAA qualifiers clinched All-American status, tying for the fifth-most All-America honors in a single season and the most for the program since In his 20th season at the pinnacle of the program, Davis squad received multiple All-America honors for the first time since Senior Tyler Graff (133) became the program s fourth four-time All-American after a second-place finish at the NCAA championships. Freshman Isaac Jordan (157) earned an All-America honor after seventh-place finish, becoming the fourth member of his family to acquire the accolade while wrestling at Wisconsin. The 2013 season saw Davis help Tyler Graff earn the third, and highest, All-America honor of his career, placing third at 133 lbs. Under Davis, Graff became the ninth three-time All- American in Wisconsin history. Davis also helped Jackson Hein and Connor Medbery qualify for their first NCAA championships appearances. Davis led the Badgers to their third-straight top 10 finish at the NCAA Division I Championships in 2011, and coached four of the seven wrestlers who qaulified to All-America honors. In 2010, Davis won the biggest accolade of his coaching career when he was named the National Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Davis helped Wisconsin to a fourth place finish at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, tying for best finish in school history and best under his reign. In addition, he helped aid thensophomore Andrew Howe to his first NCAA Division I title at 165 lbs. and a perfect 37-0 overall record. His Badgers finished the dual season with a overall mark and 3-5 mark in the Big Ten. The season marked the 11th time (and 10th-consecutive year) Davis s teams have won at least nine duals. More impressive, Davis s squad finished ninth at the NCAA championships, tying for the best finish in his 15-year tenure. Five wrestlers qualified for the 2009 NCAA Championships and Wisconsin brought home three All-Americans including runnerup at 165 lbs., Andrew Howe, Kyle Ruschell (3rd at 149 lbs.) and Zach Tanelli (4th at 141 lbs.). Davis reached a milestone during the season by recording his 150th career win with an victory over Oklahoma on Feb. 21, This made him just the second UW coach to do so, joining George Martin who coached for 32 years and finished Davis was installed as the 15th head coach in Wisconsin history on March 4, 1994, after serving as the program s interim head coach for the season. During his tenure, Davis has coached seven individuals to 11 Big Ten titles, including the latest, Andrew Howe, who captured the 165 lbs. title as a true freshman in Howe is the only true freshman during Davis s tenure to win a Big Ten title. Davis also coached Donny Pritzlaff (165 pounds, 1999, 2000, 01), Keith Davison (190 pounds, 1994), Matt Hanutke (118 pounds, 1994), Eric Jetton (126 pounds, 1997, 98) and Kevin Wilmot (167 pounds, 1997) Tom Clum (125 pounds in 2004 and 133 pounds in 2006) to conference championships. Additionally, 21 of Davis wrestlers have earned All-America honors while two have claimed NCAA titles. Pritzlaff won back-to-back national championships in 2000 and 2001 and Jeff Walter won the 1996 heavyweight title. Sixty-two wrestlers have qualified for the NCAA championships under Davis direction, including current Badgers Tyler Graff, Jackson Hein, Connor Medbery and Cole Tobin.
