In ULM s first game ever in Sun Belt postseason play, it fell on a devistating Troy layup with four seconds remaining. Last season the Warhawks avenged the defeat with an upsetting win over the defending champions Western Kentucky in the No. 10 vs. No. 7 matchup. They eventually fell to second-seeded UALR in the quarterfinals in Hot Springs. THE OTHER BENCH AND WHAT THEY BRING Denver (17-12) finished the season on a three-game winning streak, including a victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in the season finale. In the contest Kaetlyn Murdoch scored a game-high 24 points and blocked a game-best six shots, while Ashly Robinson hauled in 12 rebounds. Murdoch finished the season ranked fifth in the nation and first in the Sun Belt in field goal percentage (62.5). She also led the league and ranked 12th in the nation in blocks (87, 3.0 per game). Britteni Rice and Brianna Culberson each averaged 14.5 and 13.9 points per game, respectively. Murdoch and Rice were also named to the Sun Belt Conference post-sesaon teams. A TRIPLE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS The countdown began prior to the season and heated up over the past several games for Jesse Carrier and her quest to become the all-time greatest 3-pointer shooter in ULM history. Carrier s first 3-pointer in the opening half of the Feb. 10th contest at UALR pushed her into sole possession of the 3-point makes record. She added another triple latter in the half and now has 182 career long balls. In addition, she has drained her 3-pointers at a 36.0 percent clip, which ranks fourth in ULM history. 2 THE WARHAWK STATE-ment WINS While the ULM women have faced stiff competition this season, it has played well against in-state foes. Since joining the Sun Belt in , the Warhawks have compiled a 23-9 record against their instate foes. The Warhawks are 6-3 record this season against teams from the Pelican State. MS. CLUTCH IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT When the game is on the line, there is one player head coach Mona Martin wants to have the ball -- Priscilla Mbiandja. During the Warhawks recent victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, Mbiandja calmly stepped up to the foul throw line and sank four free throws in the final 36 seconds to preserve the victory. It takes a player with nerves of steel to be able to step to the charity stripe and have a sense of tranquility. Mbiandja has that ability, as she has knocked down 86.5 percent of her foul shots in the final five minutes of games this season. On the season Mbiandja has an 81.0 free throw percentage. MOVING UP THE RANKS FROM DOWNTOWN People who know ULM women s basketball are familiar with the outside shooting abilities of Jesse Carrier. Since Carrier worked her way into the starting lineup her sophomore year, she has become the go-to shooter when it comes to the 3-point shot. She is not only one of the best 3-point shooters in the Sun Belt Conference, but in the country. It is not uncommon to see opponents faceguarding or even double-teaming Carrier to prevent her from gouging them with triples. On two occasions this season and five times in her career she has disheartened opponents with five 3-pointers in a game. On Feb. 10th at UALR in the first half, Carrier s first 3-pointer of the night gave her 178 career long balls and moved her into sole possession on the alltime 3-point makes list in ULM women s basketball history. As it is impressive she can make the deep shot, she is doing it at a 36.0 percent clip, which ranks fourth all-time in program history. On a side note, Carrier also holds the top spot in program history in terms of free throw percentage with a career 92.5 percent rate at the charity stripe. WARHAWKS - TWO OF A KIND Around the country there are many interesting collegiate athletic nicknames, but the Warhawk logo is among the rarest. Only one other university in the country bares the same Warhawk nickname that ULM uses - University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The most common nickname is an Eagle, as a whopping 55 schools use it to represent their sports teams. ATTACKING THE BOARDS While the Warhawks field goal percentage has dipped to a conference-worst 34.3 percent, there has been one bright spot, ULM s ability to rebound the basketball on both the offensive and defensive glass. Entering Saturday s matchup, the Warhawks rank first in the conference with a 41.9 rebounding per game average. In total, they rank first in offensive rebounding (16.6 per game) and tied for fifth in defensive rebounding (25.4 per game). Individually, Sannisha Williams is hauling in the sixth-best rebounding total (8.3 per game) in the league and 78th in the nation. Priscilla Mbiandja also ranks 15th in the league with a 6.2 per game average. Overall, ULM holds a 3.8 rebounding margin, which ranks first in the Sun Belt and 63rd nationally. WE WANT TO PLAY AT HOME Every team in the NCAA would like to play all of its game at home and that holds especially true for ULM. The Warhawks finished last season 10-4 overall and 6-3 against league foes inside the friendly confines of Fant-Ewing Coliseum. During Martin s career she is (62.9 percent) all-time at home and (63.7 percent) at home during conference play. Martin s best overall season at home came during the season when the Warhawks went 14-3 overall at home and 11-0 inside the friendly confines of Fant-Ewing Coliseum during conference play. BASKING IN THE SUN Of all the schools the Warhawks play against, Florida programs have been one of the most kind over the years. ULM first battled a school from the Sunshine State in 1982, South Florida, and came out in front, Since that game, the Warhawks have tallied seven victories compared to four defeats against the Alligator State schools. Against FIU and Florida Atlantic, both Sun Belt schools, ULM is a combined 4-4 since joining the league in and is 3-3 alltime when playing in Florida. COACH MARTIN BECOMES TOP DOG Head coach Mona Martin is in her 15th season at the helm of the ULM women s program. During her time, she has won a record setting 217 games, including seven winning seasons and two years of 20- plus wins. Martin moved into the top spot after ULM held off Troy for a win on Dec. 30. The Warhawks led by as many as 15 points, before finding themselves in a battle during the waning seconds. Sannisha Williams sank a pair of free throws with 4.9 seconds to preserve the win and push Martin into the No. 1 spot. She passed former ULM head coach Linda Harper, who won 213 games from CARRIER EXCELS IN THE CLASSROOM In a special commencement ceremony held on Dec. 10, ULM President Dr. James E. Cofer, Sr., conferred a degree to Warhawk basketball player Jesse Carrier. Carrier earned her bachelor s degree from the College of Education and Human Development in kinesiology in three-and-a-half years to become the second women s basketball student-athlete to do so in as many years. Jesse exemplifies the term student-athlete in every sense, head coach Mona Martin said. She is not only a leader on the basketball floor, but a leader in the classroom and in life. A person like Jesse doesn t come around often. ARE WE THERE YET? The Warhawks will see a decrease in the total miles they will travel compared to last season. During the campaign ULM will see 13,008 miles of the American countryside. The Warhawks will travel more during their non-conference schedule than last season (4,297 to 3,567), but will ride on the bus less than last season when battling conference foes (8,339 to 10,740). SUN BELT OPENERS After the Warhawks suffered a heartbreaking double-overtime loss in their first even Sun Belt Conference opener, they have come upon good fortune the past two seasons. ULM defeated Louisiana- Lafayette (72-59) in the season and New Orleans (64-61) in , with both games coming inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Warhawks, however, weren t as lucky in the opener as they dropped a contest on the road at North Texas. ULM is now 2-2 in Sun Belt Conference openers. 4 CUTTING OFF THE PASSING LANES It appeared that Elizabeth Torres was destined to set a new school record in steals at intermission against McNeese State. She was all over wreaking havoc to the tune of six steals. While the pace of the game changed in the second period, Torres still managed to nab a pair of passes to finish with a career-high eight steals in a victory over the Cowgirls. OUCH! THAT HURT I am so aggravated right now, Martin said after her team lost by 20-plus (56-88 vs. Lamar, Dec. 5) for the second-consecutive time on the season. This is the second game in a row that we haven t given our full effort. We need to figure it out quickly, because our play is not only embarrassing for ourselves, but for our fans. It was the 37th time in her 15 year history at the helm of the Warhawks that they suffered a loss of 20 or more points. In Martin s career she has fell by 20 or more points in 40 contests. HOME OPENING HIGHS AND LOWS During head coach Mona Martin s 15 years at ULM, her teams have delivered a few home-opening thrashings and have received a few thumpings. During Martin s 14 home-openers she is 9-5 overall and has won the last six inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Below is a list of the top two defeats and victories during season openers: DEFEATS: L, South Alabama L, Arkansas VICTORIES: W, McNeese State W, Memphis MBIANDJA SAVES ULM WITH FTs During the Warhawks victory over Youngstown State they built what appeared to be an insurmountable 17-point lead. The Penguins wouldn t go away quietly, however, as they chipped away got to within five points before Priscilla Mbiandja took over. In the final five minutes she knocked down 7-of-8 free throws and in total 12-of-14 to preserve the win. HARASSING DEFENSE ULM came out on the night of Nov. 24th and harassed Centenary all game-long with its full-court pressure defense. Within the first six-plus minutes of the game, the Warhawks caused nine turnovers. ULM s stifling defense caused Centenary to turn the ball over 40 times. It was the highest turnover total in the past five seasons. The last time the Warhawks forced their opponent into 40 or more errors was on Dec. 7, 2004, when Southern Miss coughed the ball up 48 times, 27 in the second half alone. WHAT A STREAK THAT WAS Senior captain Jesse Carrier is known for her outside shooting abilities. Entering the season-opener against Tulane she had an impressive streak of 23-consecutive games with a made 3-pointer, which was a school record. Along the way she finished with 19 games of two or more 3-pointers, including a 5-for-10 performance against Louisiana-Lafayette last season. While her streak was impressive, all streaks must come to an end, and hers did against Tulane. Carrier finished 0-for-5 from behind the arc and scored eight points. CARRIER SCORES IN A DIFFERENT FASHION Most people know Jesse Carrier can stroke the long ball with the best of them, but Nov. 20, against Northwestern State she appeared to be going in a different direction. Carrier detoured from her usual offensive game, shooting 3-pointers, and took the ball to the rack. In the process she netted a careerhigh 27 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe and two 3-pointers. DOUBLING UP Last season Sannisha Williams went tore up the second half of the season and finished with four double-double performances. Priscilla Mbiandja became the second player on the roster to record a double-double. Below is a list of double-doubles: Sannisha Williams 12/21/08 at Louisiana-Lafayette 18 pts rbs. 01/18/09 Troy 13 pts rbs. 01/31/09 at Middle Tennessee 11 pts rbs. 02/04/09 Western Kentucky 13 pts rbs. 11/20/09 at Northwestern State 14 pts rbs. 12/28/09 Nicholls State 19 pts rbs. 01/17/10 Denver 17 pts rbs. 02/20/10 at Louisiana-Lafayette 10 pts rbs. 02/27/10 North Texas 13 pts rbs. Priscilla Mbiandja 11/17/09 at Texas State 14 pts rbs. 11/27/09 vs. Youngstown State 25 pts rbs. REBOUNDING CLUB Currently there are three Warhawk players who have recorded double-digit rebounding efforts in a contest during their careers. Sannisha Williams dispelled the sophomore slump myth last season and hauled in six double-digit rebounding contests, including a career-high 18 boards on the road against Louisiana-Lafayette. She has nabbed eight doubledigit rebounding games this season. Shannon Davis joined the club when she hauled in a double-digit rebounding effort in the season-opener against Tulane this year. Priscilla Mbiandja is the third member of the club to record a double-digit rebounding game after hauling in a career-high 13 boards in a road victory over Texas State. Overall, she has two double-digit rebounding games. MBIANDJA TRANSFERS IN Priscilla Mbiandja decided during the spring semester that she wanted to continue her basketball playing career and decided on Monroe, La., and ULM. Mbiandja transferred from Odessa Junior College, where she was an all-region and all-conference player after averaging a team-high 10.4 points and 7.4 rebounds during her sophomore season. She also finished second in assists (80) and steals (68). 6,870 MILES FROM HOME When Priscilla Mbiandja inked on the dotted line last spring, she became the fifth foreign born player to ever lace em up for the Warhawks. Below is a list of the other four: Caroline Adriaansz (Paramaribo, Suriname) Ilona Hollosy (Szombathely, Hungary) Eun Jung Lee (Soong Eui-Seoul, South Korea) Lily Mallett (Ipswich, England) MBIANDJA REPRESENTS CAMEROON Not often does a player get to represent their home country. Priscilla Mbiandja was able to do so this past summer during the 2007 FIBA African Championship. While playing for the Cameroon National Team in 2007, she averaged 6.9 points, and a teamhigh 3.8 assists per game, as Cameroon finished with a 3-2 record. This past summer Mbiandja tallied three points, three rebounds, and two assists as Cameroon fell in the qualifying round. SEASON-OPENING HIGHS AND LOWS During head coach Martin s 15 years at ULM, her teams have delivered a few season-opening thrashings and received a few thumpings. Below is a list of the top defeats and victories in season openers: DEFEATS: L, at Arkansas L, at Arkansas VICTORIES: W, McNeese State W, Memphis UNDER PRESSURE With the game on the line, making free throws under pressure is a crucial aspect of winning close games. In addition, this year Realtimerpi.com has a RPI rating of 278 and the 275th strongest schedule in the country, while Collegerpi.com/women has a RPI rating of 276 and the 273rd strongest schedule in the country for ULM. AND THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AGAIN The Warhawks have encountered a rare occurrence for the second time in as many years -- darkness. On Nov. 17, in San Marcos, Texas, ULM experienced a 35 minute delay after a car accident cut off power to Strahan Coliseum. It didn t affect the Warhawks as they won over Texas State. Last season, ULM witnessed a power outage in its own building on Nov. 29. A two hour and six minute delay occurred just 44 seconds into the second half against Tulane. The Warhawks weren t able to pull out the win, 62-60, but Sumar Leslie scored a career-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including three 3-pointers. COACH MARTIN SECOND IN SUN BELT Mona Martin s impressive coaching resume spans more than the annals of ULM. Entering the season, Martin ranks second amongst all Sun Belt Conference coaches in terms of coaching victories in their current position with 217 wins. FIU s Cindy Russo ranks first with over 570 victories to her credit. COACH MARTIN IN FEBRUARY Mona Martin s teams are a combined (.500) during the month of February and have posted a (.642) record at home in the second month of the year. Martin s best coaching during the month of February came in the season in which her team went 7-0 and 4-0 at home. COACH MARTIN IN JANUARY Head coach Mona Martin enters with a winning record in the month of January and has nine seasons with a winning record to start the year. Overall, her teams are a combined (.552) during the month. Twice Martin s teams have recorded seven wins during the month (1994 and 2004). Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Warhawks, for a second-consecutive season, will host a WBCA Think Pink game when they battle Western Kentucky on Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. Last season there were over 1,250 schools and organizations that participated in the WBCA Think Pink campaign. In addition, during last year s WBCA Think Pink Week over 800,000 fans helped out by donating a total of nearly $1,000,000 for the awareness of breast cancer and research. ENTERING A NEW HOME When a player is told by their coach to pack up their things, the first thing that runs through their mind is what did I do wrong? This time it was for a good reason, as members of the Warhawks women s basketball program moved into their new locker room. ULM moved into its new home on the Nov. 5. The ULM Quick Facts Location... RETURNING EXPERIENCE ULM returns 12 letterwinners from last season, including four-of-five starters. During the offseason former co-associate head coach Robert Dallimore left ULM for the associate head coaching position at Sun Belt rival UALR. 6 seven years as the head coach of the women s basketball program at California State-Monterey Bay. Magner s duties include film breakdown, scouting, scheduling, camp duties, and recruiting. HOW MANY ARE THERE? Last season was a difficult one, at times, for head coach Mona Martin, as she had six freshmen on her roster. Those six freshmen tied for the second largest class under the direction of Martin -- twice before she had coached a class of eight players. To make matters worse, last season Martin s starting point guard was a duel role filled by Sumar Leslie and Elizabeth Torres. This season those freshmen are now sophomores and have another year of experience. FIRING OUT OF THE GATES ULM has fired out of the gates against non-conference foes, acquiring a record and a.698 winning percentage in the past five seasons. The Warhawks boast a overall record against non-conference competition during Mona Martin s tenure. Her best non-conference season came four seasons ago when her team went 10-1 and won by an average of 11.7 points. YOUR SPOKESWOMEN Jesse Carrier and Shannon Davis were chosen as the captains of the ULM season, as voted on by the players. This marks the first time Carrier and Davis have bestowed this title. DOWN AND OUT The injury bug struck the ULM roster before the season even started. During a preseason conditioning drill, junior Kassie Courtney went down with a torn Achilles tendon and will miss the entire season. Also, senior Ashley Wallis is still in the recovering from an offseason knee surgery. On the Monday before the Jan. 20th contest against Middle Tennessee, Sumar Leslie decided to leave the team because of a death in the family. SHE WILL BE MISSED Last season when the Warhawks got into a crunch they could always rely on senior guard Lottie Moore. This season ULM will have to turn to one of its many guards to fill the void. Moore was the do-it-all player for the Warhawks last season as she became the fifth player in ULM history to accumulate 300 points, 100 rebounds, and 100 assists in a season. If you throw the 70 steals into the equation she is the only player to accumulate those numbers during a season s time. Moore also finished her career ranked eighth all-time in steals (182). She also moved into three alltime single season statistical categories - free throws attempted (6th, 175), game started (t8th, 30), and steals (10th, 70). ULM TABBED SIXTH IN WEST DIVISION Entering its fourth year in the Sun Belt, the Warhawks were picked sixth in the West Division. The Warhawks were picked to finish fourth during last year s preseason poll and put together a 7-11 conference record to finish one spot lower, fifth place, than predicted. UALR was picked to win the West Division with 13 first place votes and 90 total points, followed by Denver was second (73), Arkansas State (66), New Orleans (43), North Texas (43), ULM (34), and Louisiana-Lafayette (15). SUN BELT TOURNAMENT Hot Springs, the number one tourist destination for the state of Arkansas, was selected by the Sun Belt Conference Executive Committee as the host for the league s annual men s and women s basketball tournaments from The tournament will be played in the city s Summit Arena, which was constructed in 2003 with a seating capacity of 6,000 and adjoins the Hot Springs Convention Center. Located 50 miles from Little Rock, Hot Springs is visited by three million tourists annually and offers more than 4,000 hotel rooms with 15 restaurants within walking distance of the Summit Arena. This season all members of the Sun Belt Conference will make the trek to Hot Springs. Last season the first round of the tournament was played on campus sites. WARHAWKS INK TRIO FOR During the NCAA s fall signing period, the ULM women s basketball program inked a trio of players for the season. Jade Benton, a 5-foot-11 center, averaged 8.3 points and 10 rebounds for Bastrop High School. She helped the Lady Rams to a record last season and a regional playoff berth. Benton also earned maxpreps.com second team all-district 2-4A honors. Jasmine Shaw, a 5-foot-10 guard, averaged 10 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals per game while playing for Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. She earned all-district honors last season. Ashleigh Simmons, a 6-foot-1 forward, averaged a team-high 15 points, along with 10.2 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game, while playing for Hawkins High School in Hawkins, Texas. She earned district MVP honors last season in basketball and also a state champion medal in the 400 meters. NCAA CHANGING THE RULES The NCAA, in its yearly effort to better the game, has made adjustments to nine rules for the season. Notable rule changes that the average fan will see are: Permit officials to use the monitor to determine whether a flagrant foul occurred. When it is determined that a flagrant foul did not occur but an intentional personal or a (men) contact technical foul or (women) player/substitute technical foul for dead ball contact occurred, those fouls shall be penalized accordingly. Assess a maximum of one administrative technical foul for any changes made to the scorebook, except when the changes are necessitated by obvious injury or illness, blood on the uniform or to replace a designated starter to shoot a technical-foul free throw after the 10-minute time limit prior to the start of the game and until the game has ended. After an initial jump ball or a jump ball for the start of an extra period(s) when possession is not gained by either team which would establish the alternating-possession procedure, a jump ball shall take place between any two players. 7 Mona Martin enters her 15th season as ULM s second longest tenured head coach. Martin guides the Warhawks into their fourth season as members of the Sun Belt Conference. Last year, Martin led the Warhawks to a 7-11 Sun Belt record and overall record. The Warhawks made history in the opening round of the conference tournament as they knocked off the defending champions, Western Kentucky, for their first ever Sun Belt Tournament victory. There were many highlights from last season, but one that stands out is Martin s 200th victory as the Warhawks head coach. Coaching at ULM is special to me because of the support from the administration, Martin said. I am proud of our players because of the high graduation that we have attained while I have been here. It means a lot to have quality people graduate from this program. In their final season in the Southland Conference ( ), the Martin-led Warhawks advanced to the O Reilly Auto Parts/Southland Conference Tournament semifinals. ULM played Stephen F. Austin for the second time to overtime in eight days, coming up one point shy of their second consecutive trip to championship game. In , Martin led ULM to a Southland Conference regular season co-championship and a 20- win season (22-8) for only the seventh time in school history. Martin coached former Warhawks standout Nina Randle to a new ULM and SLC career record in steals on her way toward earning all-southland Conference first team and SLC All-Tournament honors. Randle went on to play professionally in Switzerland. Michelle Biley, then a junior, also received COACH MARTIN AT ULM Year Overall (pct.) Conf. (pct.) Total HIGHLIGHTS... During Martin s time at ULM, the Warhawks have experienced great individual success. Martin has guided 18 individuals who were named to allconference teams, including four on the All-SLC first team. Most recently, Lottie Moore was named to the all-sun Belt Conference third team. Martin was twice named the SLC Coach of the Year, picking up the honor in 1998 and again in Entering the campaign, Martin s 207 career wins at ULM are the second-most by a Sun Belt Conference head coach at their current school. Having her program in a situation where it can vie for the conference title year-in and year-out is exactly what Martin envisioned when she arrived at ULM in 1995 after compiling a (.631) record in six seasons at West Monroe High School. Martin began her career in 1976 at Natchitoches, La., Central High School, only three months after graduating from Northwestern State with a bachelor s degree in elementary education and physical education. Martin and Central got started together because the school was about to play its inaugural season of girls basketball and needed a coach. The combination was a great success. In 11 years, Martin guided NCHS to a record, a winning percentage of.746. All but one of her teams went into the state playoffs, four of them went to the state final four and three the 1981, 1986 and 1987 squads won state championships. Her 1986 team went 36-0, won the state title and finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation. Martin was not only voted the state s top coach but the National Coach of the Year. The Lady Chiefs never finished lower than second in the district under Martin, winning six district crowns and finishing second five times. She was named district Coach of the Year four times and Louisiana Coach of the Year three times (1982, 1986, 1987). Her last two Natchitoches Central teams were 70-3 and won state titles both years. In May 1987, Martin entered collegiate coaching when she was named associate head coach at Northwestern State. In her two years, she helped the Lady Demons go and make their firstever NCAA Tournament appearance. From Northwestern State, Martin moved to West Monroe High School where success followed. In her six years at WMHS, she put the Lady Rebels in the state playoffs every year and won three District 2-5A championships. Her 1994 squad went to the state finals and Martin received her fourth state Coach of the Year award. Her coaching career also includes 10 seasons of AAU basketball coaching experience, serving as co-head coach of the New Orleans-based Domino s team. Her first AAU team advanced to the 1986 national championship game. Her final squad, just before she was named ULM head coach, finished seventh among 77 teams at the 1995 national championships in Dallas. At ULM, she has a record of overall and in league contests as a member of the Southland and Sun Belt Conferences. After opening with two 5-21 seasons, she guided her Record vs. Opponents Opponent...
