1 Netball Hutt Valley School Information 2019 Year 1-8 This information is up to date as at November Please re-check dates in Office Contact Details Your main contact for the Junior Season is Kirsten Behl, Administration Assistant. Phone: Website: Facebook: Year 1- Year 8 Mother Earth futureferns: Netball Hutt Valley are proud to be an endorsed provider of futureferns. This Netball NZ programme is especially designed for Year 1-8 netballers. There are coaching resources and workshops for all age groups. The futureferns Netball programme meets the players social, physical and cognitive needs and abilities. Some of the benefits of the modified formats used are: Players have more touches of the ball which means more opportunities for development. Focus on developing the fundamental movement skills. Fewer players on court, therefore less complicated decision making. Modified equipment and court size scaled down from the adult version to fit the children. More attempted and successful shots at goal. Developing a lifelong love of Netball. More information including video resources: NOTE: All age groups have a minimum half game policy. This is especially important to note in the Year 7-8 grades where previously coaches have had players on the side-line for longer. 5 NetballSmart On Saturday 4 May (first grading day) all Intermediate teams and coaches are encouraged to warm up with Netball Central Zone s NetballSmart Officer. Look for the signage at the northern end of the courts, warm ups being led throughout the day. For videos of the warm up components check out: Why we are focussing on NetballSmart: The NetballSmart Dynamic Warm-Up is specifically developed for Netball and aims to enhance performance and prevent injuries at all age groups and levels. The Warm-Up includes strengthening, running, dynamic preparation, and Netball specific preparation movements. This approach helps an athlete develop the movement skill and strength necessary for Netball, and physiologically prepares an athlete to train and play the game. Female athletes have at least 3.5 times the risk of sustaining a non-contact ACL injury compared with males. In 2016, 48% of all Netball injuries occurred at the Intermediate and Secondary School age group. Post-adolescent, females change their landing strategies and are more likely to have risky landing patterns. This is associated with an increased ACL injury risk. Knee injuries are the most serious netball injuries, with higher surgical repair rates. Ankle injuries are the most common and recurrent netball injuries. 50% of the ankle sprain population will re-sprain within 24 months. FREE NetballSmart workshops at our Centre: Dynamic Warmup Workshop Tuesday 14 May pm at the Taita Pavilion. Coaches please register in advance on our website (Free) and bring a player along to do the activities. Landing Skills and Warmup refresher Wednesday 22 May pm at the Taita Pavilion. The Landing Skills module (new 2019) targets athletes at all levels of the game with a focus on quality. When integrated into regular training sessions it helps to link safe, competent movement with performance. Coaches please register in advance on our website (Free) and bring a player along to do the activities. Tournament Preparation Workshop Monday 10 June pm at the Taita Pavilion. Prepare for AIMS games or other tournaments, learn practical ways to be NetballSmart including the power warmup. Intermediate School visits: Book a FREE one hour workshop held at your school for your coaches. Netball Central Zone s NetballSmart officer will facilitate the workshop and then offer a follow up visit to team trainings to work with players. There is the option of a third visit so that coaches can be supported to have a go themselves to implement their learning with support. To book your dates, please contact Lee Spence NetballSmart@netballcentral.co.nz The Whistlers Umpire Development Programme The Whistlers is a programme especially for up and coming umpires aged from Year 7 and upwards, including college students. 6 Schools are invited to nominate players for selection into our Year 7 or Year 8 Player Development Programme Squads. PDP replaces representative teams for this age group. Sponsored by Muffin Break, PDP provides opportunities to more players to develop and extend their technical, tactical and athlete development skills, while encouraging a broader talent pool and continuing to engage players. Instead of selecting 10 to 24 players in each age group (out of nearly 100 teams in our Year 7-8 competition) we will now select around 60 players in each of these age groups to work with. Selected squads will attend three development sessions inside the Walter Nash Centre (each session 2 or 3 hours long) as well as a final tournament day at the Taita Courts. Players nominated need to be available for all dates as detailed below. Communication is via school coordinators until the squads are selected. Please note there are subs of $ TBC payable by selected players to help cover costs. In 2018 all players were provided with a hoodie, t-shirt, drawstring bag, and drink bottle via Muffin Break s sponsorship. We hope that there is similar support via NNZ and sponsors in Coaches are welcome and encouraged to attend the PDP sessions either for their own development or to share their expertise with our developing players. There are NNZ session plans for each age group, with Year 7 s focus being Space and Year 8 s focus being Gaining Possession. Please get in touch if your school has interested coaches. 9 The first default (notified on time) for each school team is free. Late defaults and further defaults will incur a fee as it is really unfair on the opposition to miss out on a game. Please consider the impact of defaulting before you take this step. To avoid a default, we can register additional players for your team at no charge, and you can take the court with five players. For Year 1-2 and 3-4 futureferns there are no defaults. For these, you need fewer players for games, and it is non-competitive so we can share players to ensure everyone gets a game. Please advise our Coordinator on arrival if you are short of players on the day. Defaults for Saturday and Monday games need to be advised by or phone (in person) by 12 noon on Friday. If your call is not answered, please call the cell-phone number on our answerphone, to ensure we do get your message. In extreme circumstances we will extend the deadline for Monday defaults to 9am on that morning. Fee Payments Annual registration fees are due on or before 1 June After this date a late payment penalty of $50 will apply. Payments can be made online to Netball Hutt Valley Centre; using your school name as a reference. Invoices will be sent to schools in May. First Aid/Physio Physiotherapy Services are TBC for Usually available at the Walter Nash Centre courtside at our Senior Competition. Teams need to have their own first aid kit regardless of which day or venue they are playing at. Ice is available at the Taita Courts. Gold Coin Days & Foodbank Appeal Gold Coin days are a very important fundraiser for our Centre and help to keep the team entry fees lower. The Saturday Gold Coin days are on 25 May and 3 August. The Monday Gold Coin days are on 27 May and 5 August. Schools may be rostered gold coin duty times based on their total number of teams entered. (In 2018 the Executive did all gold coin duties) A food bank appeal day will be held on Saturday 22 June and Monday 24 June. Please encourage your players and supporters to bring a non-perishable food item on these days for us to donate locally. Kitchen duty/fundraising Any club wishing to book the kitchen for fundraising activities needs to return form NHV 6 (included) ASAP to secure their space. There are still plenty of dates available, please contact us ASAP to secure yours! The BBQ may also be booked on Monday afternoons. McDonald s Sponsorship We are pleased to announce that McDonald s Hutt Valley will be providing all Year 5-8 teams with a new netball (size 4 for Year 5-6 and size 5 for Year 7-8. These will be allocated at the start of the winter competition. We are grateful to McDonald s Hutt Valley for also providing balls for us to use in the delivery of the Year 3-4 programme.
10 We also have Player of the Day certificates with vouchers to give to teams in Years 3-8. Certificates will be available for collection from the Registrations Office at the start of the season. Mixed Teams For 7v7 netball you can register up to 3 boys in a team, but only 2 boys may take the court at any one time and need to play at opposite ends of the court. If a boy plays C then only one on court. In 5v5 and 6v6 netball boys and girls may play in the same team with no positional restrictions. Purchase of Netball Equipment We recommend Sports Distributors as a supplier for your netball equipment. We suggest pop over bibs for junior teams as you can use them for both trainings and games. They can also be worn over warm layers, so for children they are a better choice than Velcro bibs. All teams should have a small first aid kit that includes plasters. Year 1-2 we provide all balls, bibs and equipment on the day. The balls used are called PG844 Super Grip balls 20cm. These are awesome for children learning to pass and catch so you may like some for home or school (just under $10 each). Year 3-4 we provide the balls and equipment for the skills session on game day. Schools should provide each team with a size 4 netball to use at game time. You may need more balls if teams are training during the week (optional, a lot don t train). Teams need to provide their own bibs. Bibs can be A, A, C, D, D (easy for players), or you can use a set of regular netball bibs with the WA and WD taken out. Goal posts used are 2.6m high. As only 2/3 of the court is used we use portable posts on game day at one end, most schools won t need to worry about extra posts as training sessions are short and there are plenty of activities using one post or no posts. Year 5-6 teams need their own size 4 ball and a set of bibs (A A C C D D). Goal posts used are 2.6m high, and a full court is used. As most teams will have a practice session they will likely need some more balls and some marker cones/spots or chalk. Most schools were provided with bibs for this age group via sponsorship in 2017/2018. Please check with us before purchasing for 2019 in case we are able to offer discounted or sponsored bibs again. Year 7-8 teams use full height goal posts and regular 7 v 7 bibs. Additional balls and marker cones/spots or chalk are handy for training sessions. Team Stickers for Score Cards/Registrations on Game Day Year 5-8 player s names need to be listed on the back of your scorecard each week before the game. To save you writing them out, you can purchase stickers listing your registered players and each week you can just put a line through players who do not take the court and add any additional players that you are playing up (they can play up twice, on the third time they need to move up). Stickers for the whole season (not including grading games) are $2.
11 Please Kirsten to arrange stickers for your teams. Money for stickers can be paid to Netball Hutt Valley Centre using your school or team name and stickers as references. If ordered early enough, sticker cost can be added to your school s team entry invoice. Uniforms Junior players may wear a long sleeved thermal top under their uniform all thermals for your team need to be one colour. Not all players need to wear the thermal at the same time. Teams are now able to register matching tights/leggings for Year 3-4 and 5-6 games played outdoors. Not all players need to wear tights at the same time. Intermediate players may not wear tights, but players may keep their core warm with a thermal. The office may relax rules on extra cold game days and announce that sweatshirts/tracksuits can be worn under playing bibs. School PE uniforms are fine to be used as netball uniforms as long as the players in a team are all matching it is no problem.
