LATE-GAME HEROICS: The Waves picked up a win over UT Martin thanks to some late-game heroics. Keitra Wallace s three-point play with 24 seconds left and Ea Shoushtari s steal right before the buzzer gave the Pepperdine women s basketball team a thrilling victory over UT Martin in the consolation game of the Hawkeye Challenge on Saturday. LAST WEEK: Pepperdine also played two other games last week, beating UC Irvine, 76-53, early in the week before falling to No. 18 Iowa, The Waves got 20 points from Allie Green and 19 from Bria Richardson, forcing 22 turnovers in the game. Pepperdine hung with Iowa into the second half, but the Hawkeyes got hot from downtown to pull away late. SCHEDULE NOTES: The Waves open the regular season with fi ve road games before returning to Malibu for a home contest against Army on Nov. 30. The Pepperdine schedule features 11 non-conference games to go along with the full 18-game WCC slate. The Waves will play fi ve national tournament participants during non-conference play (Nebraska, Iowa, Army, Cal State Northridge and Albany) as well as BYU and Gonzaga in WCC action. BYU made a Sweet 16 run last year, while Gonzaga was upset in the fi rst round.
2 HEAD COACH RYAN WEISENBERG CAL POLY, ND YEAR AT PEPPERDINE WEISENBERG HIGHLIGHTS Hired as the sixth head coach in program history April 23, 2013 Has coaching experience at the professional, prep and collegiate level Spent three seasons with the Manawatu Jets in the New Zealand National Basketball League Led the Jets to a third place regular season finish and final four playoff appearance in 2011 Coached league MVP, Nick Horvath, and league leading scorer, Josh Pace, while with the Jets Worked with the Los Angeles Lakers from , earning NBA Championship rings in 00, 01 and 02 as the teams assistant video coordinator Also worked with the Los Angeles Sparks from , winning two titles with the team in 01 and 02 Served as interim head coach of the Sparks for a stint in 2004 Has held prep jobs at four different prep schools, including head jobs at Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana, Calif.) and South Pasadena High School Weisenberg s wife, Lyndsey (nee Hache ), played volleyball at Pepperdine from WAVES TAKE ON CAL POLY, ARMY HAWKEYE CHALLENGE ALL-TOURNAMENT: Keitra Wallace was named to the Hawkeye Challenge All-Tournament team for her efforts after averaging 15.5 points per game in two contests. She had a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds in the Waves one-point win over UT Martin to close the tournament. Wallace is second on the team averaging 13.8 points per game so far this season. SOPHOMORE JUMP: Allie Green has made good strides early on in her sophomore campaign, leading the team with 14.8 points and 5.8 boards per game. Green was named to the WCC All-Freshman team last season after averaging 11.5 ppg, which was fourth best on the Waves squad. Green had a season-high 20 points against UC Irvine last week and has scored in double digits each game this year. SENIOR GUARDS: Pepperdine returns the core of its starting lineup from last season including senior guards Bria Richardson and Ea Shoushtari. Richardson is coming off a breakout year that was derailed by a season-ending injury only a few weeks into conference play. The now-senior guard led the Waves in scoring last year and was at or near the top of the conference scoring list before she went down, putting up 16.9 points per game in 34.6 minutes per contest. Shoushtari took over the point guard duties for the second half of the year following Richardson s injury, scoring 12.0 points per game and showing her versatility by leading the team in rebounding with 6.7 boards per contest. A consistent outside threat, Shoushtari led the Waves with 59 three-pointers on the year, good for the fourth-best season total in Pepperdine history. SCORING OUTBURST: Richardson put up one the brightest highlights of the season last year, scoring 44 points in a double-overtime win over Santa Clara. The offensive outburst was the highest-scoring night of any WCC player last year and was the second-highest single-game point total in both Pepperdine and WCC history. WALLACE AT THE LINE: Junior forward Keitra Wallace showed her scoring prowess as she fi nished second on the team with 12.1 points per game, using her strength to consistently get to the foul line. Her 135 free throws made were good for third most in program history as she hit 135-of-196 foul shots. Her 196 attempts were the second most all-time for a Pepperdine player. ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM: Allie Green was named to the WCC s All-Freshman team last season as one of the top fi ve freshmen in the conference as voted on by the WCC coaches. The rookie guard played in 24 games for Pepperdine and made 17 starts, averaging 11.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Green s 29.7 minutes per game were also fourth on the team as she shot 38.5 percent from the fi eld and 31.9 percent from 3-point territory. Of the fi ve players on the All-Freshman squad, Green s 11.3 ppg average was the highest total. She was 23rd on the conference scoring list. Green scored a season and career-high 27 points against Long Beach State early in the year and also posted a 24-point game in the Waves win over Santa Clara. She topped the 15-point mark six times on the year and scored in double fi gures 14 times. RYAN WEISENBERG ERA: The start of the season marked the opening of the Ryan Weisenberg era at Pepperdine. Weisenberg has made stops on the professional, collegiate and prep level during his coaching tenure, most recently coaching the Manawatu Jets in the New Zealand National Basketball League. Weisenberg has also spent time on the staffs of the Los Angeles Lakers and Sparks, winning a total of fi ve titles with the teams from He is the sixth coach in program history. 4 PEPPERDINE BASKETBALL PLAYER NOTES #44 KELSEY BROCKWAY, JR, F, 6-1, PALOS VERDES HS Was one of two players to appear in all 31 games last season, making 17 starts as a sophomore. Averaged 4.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in 23.1 minutes per game, and led the Waves with 19 total blocks. Matched her career-high with a 13-point performance against LMU. Her 14 rebound game against UC Santa Barbara (12/3/13) was both a career-high and the best total for a Wave all season. Posted two double-digit point and two double digit rebound games. As a freshman she made 22 starts and led the team with 0.9 bpg. Swatted a season-high fi ve shots against No. 17 UCLA (12/28/13), the most by a Wave in #25 TESSA EMERSON, SR, F/C, 6-2, SANTA BARBARA HS Was third on the team with 21 starting assignments as a junior, appearing in 24 total games. Averaged 6.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, and upped her scoring to 6.6 ppg in WCC play. Was second on the team with a 40.6 shooting % (54-for-133). Scored career-high 14 points against Portland and BYU. Had a career-best 14 rebounds against Seattle (11/8/13) in the Waves opener, also scoring 10 points for her only double-double. Was one of four players on the team to average at least 30.0 minutes. Posted a career-high 27 points against Long Beach State (11/30/13) and also had a 24-point game against Santa Clara (1/2/14). Led Agoura HS Chargers to a CIF Southern Section title as a junior. Scored 30 points in the title game against No. 1-seeded Gahr, including six three-pointers on the night. Was a four-time all-league selection at Agoura High. #0 KAMERON JOHNSTON, FR, G, 5-8, RANDALL HS Averaged 14.8 pts, 9.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.9 steals as senior. Was a McDonalds All-American nominee. Earned All-State and All-District honors as a senior. Named Amarillo Globe, Panhandle Plains and Golden Spread Teams. Was a team MVP for Randall HS as a senior. Also ran track, setting school record in 300M hurdles and mile relay. Qualifi ed for the state meet in track as a junior and senior. #30 OLIVIA OGWUMIKE, FR, F, 5-11, CYPRESS WOODS HS Helped lead Cypress Woods to a 5-A Region III fi nal as a prep senior. Averaged 15 points per game as a senior and over 10 ppg each year. Cypress Woods had two 30-win seasons during her tenure and compiled a total of 117 wins in her four years. Team was ranked third in the state both her junior and senior years. Named All-District fi rst team each of her four years. Also played volleyball, posting 277 kills and 115 total blocks. Sisters Nneka and Chiney were standouts at Stanford and currently play in the WNBA. #24 KRISTA PETTEPIER, SO, F, 6-2, PITTSBURGH Red-shirted last season after transferring from Pittsburgh. Appeared in all 30 games, including starts in the fi nal eight games of the season, as a freshman at Pitt. Named to 2012 All-State Class 4A Third Team by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. Also earned selection to the Des Moines Register First Team All- Conference and the Class 4A State All-Tournament squads. Finished second on career blocked shots list and third on career rebound chart at Ankeny High School. Helped Ankeny to state titles in basketball and volleyball. #10 BRIA RICHARDSON, SR, G, 5-8, SERRA HS Started all 17 games she appeared in before suffering an injury. Earned WCC All-Academic fi rst team and WCC Commissioner s Honor Roll last season. Led the Waves in scoring with 16.9 points per game in a team-best 34.6 minutes per game. Scored 44 points in double OT win over Santa Clara (1/2/14); the second highest single-game total in both Pepperdine and WCC history. Earned WCC Player of the Week honors after her 44-point outburst. Reached double-digit scoring totals in all but three games she played last season. Led Chaminade to a Division II state title as a senior last year. Was a fi nalist for the Ms. Basketball California State Player of the Year. Named All-CIF second team and All-Mission League first team. Garnered LA Times All-Star Team honors her senior year. Scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the state title game. Averaged 14.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.4 blocks as a senior. #42 HALEY VIDECKIS, SO, G, ARIZONA STATE Transferred from Arizona State prior to last season. Earned Pac-12 All-Freshman honorable mention notice. Played in 29 games (all of the bench) and fi nished fi rst on the team in three-point fi eld goals (28) and fi fth in both scoring (6.7 ppg) and rebounding (3.3 rpg). Two-time All-CIF selection during her prep career #1 WHITNEY WILLIAMS, SO, G, 5-8, EL TORO HS Averaged 16.8 points and 3.6 steals as a prep junior and 13.8 points and 3.1 steals as a senior. Named Team MVP and best defensive player her senior year. Was an All-South Coast League fi rst team honoree as a junior and senior. Named All-CIF second team her junior year. Also lettered in track and fi eld at El Toro High School. Team won a South Coast League Championship in Served as the team manager for the Waves last year.
