2 The 2009 Duke men s soccer team enters the season with a lot of untapped potential. While not extremely young in terms of upperclassmen, the Blue Devils are certainly inexperienced. Returning five starters and 17 letterwinners and welcoming nine newcomers to the squad, head coach John Kerr likes what the Blue Devils bring to practice every day. Duke will have some holes to fill left by the graduation of five players and will look towards those who may not have seen many minutes in years past. After waiting patiently in the wings behind the talents of last year s seniors, numerous Blue Devils are poised for breakout seasons in Taking over the roles as the team leaders are senior Josh Bienenfeld and juniors Christian Ibeagha and Nick Tsipis. The trio will aim at pushing Duke to its 23rd appearance in the NCAA Tournament as well as the program s sixth ACC title. Some might think the youth and inexperience is a negative, but those traits also give the Blue Devils great potential to surprise their opponents throughout the year. Here is a look at what Duke brings to the field. Forward The graduation of All-American Mike Grella leaves big shoes to fill in the attack, but Kerr believes that the combination of various players will be able take the reins of the attack. Senior Trae Harrison will be a key figure in the lineup. Outstanding in the air, Harrison gives Duke an aerial force around the goal, while his speed will make him dangerous on the wings. Freshman Ryan Finley will vie for a starting role up top for the Blue Devils. A talented striker, Finley s pace and technical skill will give opposing defenses fits all season. Between his runs and his abilities to run at defenses he no doubt will get his fair share of scoring opportunites, while also opening holes for other players to score. A sophomore transfer from George Washington, Ryan Ruffing will see quality minutes for Duke. An imposing presence at 6-2 and 200 pounds, Ruffing can run at defenders and strike the ball from distance. With one year under his belt, sophomore Graham 2009 Season Outlook Oxley also is poised to be an impact player up front. At 6-2, Oxley has the size to battle defenders in the box and is not afraid to take a chance on goal. An attacking minded player, junior Cole Grossman could see time in the attack as a withdrawn forward. Grossman s vision on the field is second to none on the Blue Devil squad. He is able navigate in tight spaces, find the open player and is an outstanding finisher. Midfield The middle third of the field is Kerr s deepest group. Grossman, Bienenfeld and Ryan McDaniel all can anchor the middle of the field. Grossman possesses the skill to emerge as one of the top playmakers in the conference, while Bienenfeld s versatility will give Kerr the ability to tinker with the lineup as needed. McDaniel will vie for a starting spot after playing behind talented playmakers the past three seasons. His steady improvement during his career will make him an integral piece of Duke s success this season. Kerr has many options to run on the wings. Sophomore Temi Molinar returns after a solid freshman campaign with two goals and four assists for eight points. Quick with the ball at his feet, Molinar is not afraid to take players one-on-one and get in behind opposing defenses. Sophomore Kwasi Ayisi also has the potential to be an impact player in 2009 after earning three starts in his rookie season. He shows glimpses of magic on the field, but the coaches will look for him to be more consistent this season. Sophomore walk-ons Christopher Tweed-Kent and Daniel Tweed-Kent are making huge strides daily after joining the squad during the spring. They have adjusted to the level of play and always will be two of the hardest workers on the field. Duke's second set of twin brothers Ryan Brown and Christian Brown also could see minutes on the outside. Bringing with them outstanding soccer resumes, Ryan and Christian will give depth off the bench for the Blue Devils. Senior walk-on Eduardo Meza also adds another dimension to middle third of the field. Defense The departure of Darrius Barnes and Pavelid Castaneda from the backline will be felt, but the players stepping into those same roles are ready to leave their own mark. Ibeagha is primed for a breakout season as he returns to the center back position after playing in the midfield last season. An outstanding leader, he reads the game well and is strong in the air. Playing next to him will be rookie sensation Andrew Wenger. A member of the U.S. U-20 National Team over the summer, Wenger possesses incredible poise on the field and will help the Blue Devils generate an attack out of the back. Seeing the majority of minutes at outside back will be seniors Matthew Thomas and Nick Sih. Both saw ample playing time as juniors and are prepared to move into leadership roles. Thomas is strong on the ball and will be able to help stop teams from attacking down the sidelines. An attack-minded back, Sih is not afraid to get into the attack with overlapping runs. On the defensive side, he reads the game well and will prevent teams from getting the ball in behind the back line. Goalkeeper The fight for the starting goalkeeping job will be a good one this season. Sophomore Jan Trnka- Amrhein returns after seeing some time during his freshman season. He will be challenged by Tsipis who has continued to improve the past two seasons. Rookie James Belshaw also will be vying for the starting spot. Hailing from Nottingham, England, Belshaw comes with outstanding experience. Junior Devon Bostock will push the others every day as he battles for minutes in net. Regardless of who earns the start, the Blue Devils will be in good hands Duke Men's Soccer

In 1997, Duke was the first university in the country to adopt a code of conduct for apparel manufacturers requires licensees, their contractors and sub-contractors to accept independent monitoring of factory working conditions. Two years later, Duke established another standard by requiring its licensees to publicly disclose the names and locations of factories that manufacture Duke items. Duke remains very involved in these issues and committed to ensuring that products bearing its name and/or trademarks are manufactured under decent and humane working conditions. Nike will provide cash compensation annually to the Duke Department of Athletics over the term of the contract. Nike will provide annual funding to local charities of Duke s choice.
