UT s 34-point victory was its largest margin of victory in Ohio s Convocation Center and its largest margin of victory ever in a MAC road game. UT has won three straight games at Ohio for its longest win streak since winning six for Toledo has shot 50 percent or higher in five of its last seven contests (and 47.0 percent or higher in all seven). During this stretch, the Rockets are shooting 52.0 percent from the field and 48.8 percent from three-point range. The Rockets 44 first-half points were two shy of their season high 46 at Detroit Mercy. Ohio s 25 points were the lowest by a Rocket opponent this season. In addition, the Bobcats three treys and 20.0 three-point FG% were lows by a UT opponent. Toledo improved its record when leading at halftime to The Rockets out-rebounded the Bobcats by a margin, marking their largest rebounding advantage since a margin vs. Miami on Feb. 13, 2016 UT has won the battle of the boards in nine of its last 11 contests. UT has won 12 of 13 contests when out-shooting its opponent from the field. TAKING A LOOK AT THE ROCKETS IN CONFERENCE PLAY Toledo leads the MAC in FG% (51.8), 3PTFG% (48.8), three-point field goals per game (11.8) and rebounding margin (+5.0) and ranks second in points (85.8) and assists (16.5 apg) per game, scoring margin (+12.0) and assist/turnover ratio (1.2). Tre Shaun Fletcher ranks first in scoring at 20.4 ppg, and Jaelan Sanford is fifth at 18.6 ppg. Willie Jackson ranks second in field-goal percentage at 66.7 percent. Sanford is also third with a 3.0 assist/turnover ratio, and Fletcher is fourth with a 2.8 mark. Marreon Jackson and Fletcher are tied for third with PTFG% and Nate Navigato is tied for seventh 51.9 percent. Navigato is tied for first with 2.8 treys per game and Sanford is tied for fourth with 2.6 treys per game. THREE-POINT PRODUCTION One of Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk s goals for the Rockets heading into the campaign was to increase their three-point field goals. Toledo has done just that this season by converting 184-of-441 attempts for a 41.7 conversion rate, a mark that sits at the top of the MAC and ranks ninth nationally. UT s 10.2 treys per game also pace the MAC and are well ahead of last year s average of 7.7 three-pointers per game. The Rockets posted a 36.2 three-point field-goal percentage last year. Toledo tied its season high with 14 three-point field goals at Central Michigan (Jan. 13), a mark that is tied for third-most in school history. The school record is 17 vs. Wright State on Dec. 22, 2003 with UT also hitting 16 vs. Marshall on Jan. 12, UT has tallied nine or more treys in 15 of 18 contests, including 14-of-25 totals vs. Saint Joseph s (Nov. 11), 14-of-32 totals at CMU (Jan. 13), 13-of-22 totals at Ohio (Jan. 16), 13-of-23 totals vs. WMU (Jan. 9), 12-of-25 totals at Syracuse (Nov. 22) and 12-of-29 totals at Kansas (Nov. 28). 5 FLETCHER MAKING HIS MARK FOR ROCKETS IN FINAL COLLEGIATE SEASON Senior Tre Shaun Fletcher is enjoying a standout season in his final year of collegiate basketball for Toledo and has been named to the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List after sitting out the campaign following his transfer from the University of Colorado. Fletcher has FLETCHER S DOUBLE-DOUBLES DATE OPPONENT PTS-REB 11/14/17 Ohio Northern /22/17 at Syracuse /24/17 at Cornell /2/17 Texas Southern /6/17 at Detroit Mercy /16/17 Wright State /5/18 Akron made an immediate impact in a Rocket uniform and leads the Rockets with 18.2 ppg (3rd in MAC), 8.2 rpg (3rd) and 3.9 apg (8th) and is tied for the team lead with 0.9 spg. He scored a career-high 31 points vs. Marshall (Dec. 9) and leads the team with 16 double-digit scoring contests. The Wilmar, Ark. native has earned MAC West Division Player of the Week honors twice, the first on Nov. 20 (27 pts., 10 reb., 7 asst. vs. ONU; 20 pts., 8 reb. vs. Oakland) and the second on Jan. 15 (21 pts., 8 reb., 8 asst. vs. WMU; 22 pts., 6 reb, 4 Fletcher has produced six more double-doubles this season - 19 pts.-11 reb (5-of-6 3fg) at Syracuse (Nov. 22), 20 pts.-12 reb. Fletcher averaged 7.1 points and 2.4 rebounds for the Buffaloes in 19.6 minutes per game in the campaign to help CU earn its fourth NCAA Tournament berth in the last five seasons. A starter in 14 of 34 contests, Fletcher tallied double-digit point totals in nine outings and shot 34.7 percent (35-of-101) from three-point range and 83.3 percent (55-of-66) from the charity stripe. FLETCHER S TREY PART OF SPORTSCENTER S TOP 10 Tre Shaun Fletcher game-winning shot at Detroit Mercy received national attention as it was ranked No. 2 on ESPN s SportsCenter Top 10 plays later that evening. Fletcher hit a three-pointer from the wing at the buzzer after the Titans had tied the game with 2.6 seconds remaining with a pair of free throws. The shot earned Fletcher some redemption after the senior guard had inadvertently committed a foul to send the Titans to the charity stripe. Nate Navigato ran the baseline after the two free throws and was able to find Fletcher. Fletcher then turned took one dribble to his right before knocking down a fadeaway trey from right in front of the Rocket bench. The play was similar to when former Rocket Juice Brown hit a three-point field goal vs. Buffalo in the campaign. Toledo has a 5-4 win-loss mark away from Savage Arena this season and has won five of its last six road tilts. UT s success on the road is a welcome departure from a four-year stretch ( ) that saw the Rockets win just one true road game out of 63 contests. Included during that period was a 47-game road losing streak that ended on Nov. 20, 2011 at Texas-Pan American. HORIZON FAMILIARITY Toledo has faced at least three Horizon League members in non-conference play over the last six years and faced four for a third consecutive year this season. The Rockets are vs. the Horizon League during this stretch, including a 10-4 mark over the last three seasons. Prior to taking over at the Rocket helm, Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk spent eight seasons coaching in the Horizon League at Green Bay. HITTING THE BOOKS Toledo received the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award last summer, marking the third time in the four years the Rockets have received the award. UT was one of just two Mid-American Conference schools to be honored and is one of 12 schools in the nation to achieve this accomplishment on three occasions in the last four years. The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes NCAA and NAIA men s basketball teams that earned a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better throughout the academic year. Fifty-one of the 211 teams to make the list were NCAA Division I-affiliated programs. HITTING THE BOOKS II Toledo received NCAA Public Recognition for its classroom commitment last spring as part of the NCAA s Academic Performance Program. The Rockets most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) was 990 which ranked among the Top 10 percent in the nation. 9 Toledo Men s Basketball Game Notes - page 9 WORKING OVERTIME Toledo tied a national record last year with eight overtime games that was held by Western Kentucky (1978), Portland (1984) and Valparaiso (1993). UT s previous record for overtime games was five in the campaign. Toledo held a lead of at least seven points at some point in each of its overtime contests and let double-digit second-half leads slip away in half of them. VALUABLE EXPERIENCE FOR ROCKETS IN TRIP TO ITALY The Rockets returned to Europe for the first time in four years with a trip to Italy over the summer. UT previously traveled to Greece prior to the campaign, a season that resulted in Toledo winning the MAC regular-season title. The Rockets emerged victorious in each of their four games. UT played its first two games in Rome against Serbian club team, KK Kolubara, in Rome on Aug before squaring off against a team of professionals from Spain in Montecatini (near Florence) on Aug. 14. Toledo s game schedule concluded with a final matchup vs. an Italian All-Star squad at the United States Army Base in Vicenza Aug. 16. During their time in Italy, the Rockets ventured to historic sites and visited some amazing places in Rome the Ancient Colosseum, the Ancient Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Vatican City and St. Peter s Basilica. The team then visited the beautiful cities of Florence and Venice and took a day trip to the Dolomite Mountains (located near the southern Alps). BENCH ADJUSTMENTS Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced the promotions of Jason Kalsow and Kyle Barlow to associate head coach and assistant coach, respectively, last summer. Kowalczyk also added a pair of former Rockets, Justin Ingram and Jordan Lauf to his coaching staff in the roles of Director of Operations and Graduate Assistant Coach.
