TOLEDO TABBED TO BE AMONG NATION S TOP 50 TEAMS IN Following its record-breaking 27 victories in , the Toledo men s basketball program received some national attention last spring. ESPN s Jeff Goodman included the Rockets in his Fab 50 for He wrote this about Toledo, Tod Kowalczyk brings back just about everyone except for (Rian) Pearson. Juice Brown is the star, but he has help from (Justin) Drummond, (J.D.) Weatherspoon and there s also size up front with (Nathan) Boothe. Goodman also identifies a Key Riser for each team and for the Rockets he tabs Jonathan Williams and write, Look for the freshman guard to slide into the starting lineup and replace Pearson. Williams should become one of the team s leading scorers. ROCKETS ADDING TALENTED QUARTET FOR CAMPAIGN Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced today the signing of 6-9, 210-pound forward Taylor Adway (Hazel Crest, IL), 6-11, 210-pound forward/center Luke Knapke (Minster, OH), 6-4, 195-pound guard Jaelan Sanford (Evansville, IN) and 6-3, 200-pound guard Chandler White (Fort Wayne, IN) to National Letter of Intents to attend the University of Toledo beginning in the academic year. Our recruiting class is very important for the future of our program, Kowalczyk said. We have three really good seniors on this year s team, and we felt we needed to bring in guys we thought were capable of giving us some pretty good minutes right away. I think we addressed a lot of needs. We needed to bring in a point guard as well as another perimeter player and a couple of post players as well. I feel really good about all four guys, because they re all very good studentathletes who fit our program s culture. Adway, who attends the same high school as Rocket senior guard Julius Brown, averaged 16.3 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.6 blocks per game for Hillcrest High School to earn South Suburban League Most Valuable Player honors. Taylor is a long, athletic, skilled 4 man who I think has a tremendous amount of potential, Kowalczyk said. He s a guy that s multi-dimensional. He can step out and shoot, play off the dribble and score with his back to the basket. Knapke averaged 14.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a junior to help Marion Local to a 20-5 win-loss mark. He earned first-team all-league, second-team all-district and honorablemention all-state accolades for his efforts. Luke is a skilled post player who is athletic and can step outside the three-point line, Kowalczyk said. I think the best part about Luke is that he possesses a tremendous feel for the game and is a very good passer. He obviously needs to gain some weight, but he has a chance to develop into a very good player. Sanford averaged 17.0 points per game as a junior en route to earning honorable mention all-state honors at Reitz High School. Jaelan is a point guard who is long, athletic and can really score, Kowalczyk said. I really like to have point guards that can score, and he reminds me a lot of (former Marquette standout) Travis Diener. He s just a tough-minded, basketball junkie. An honorable-mention all-state honoree, White averaged 15.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as a junior and surpassed the 1,000 career point mark as well. He also was a member of the Indiana Elite AAU team that won the Adidas Super 64 championship last summer. Chandler is an extremely physical combo guard who possesses a high basketball IQ, Kowlaczyk said. He can really defend, knows how to play and is developing into a more consistent shooter. PERFORMING WELL ON AND OFF THE COURT Toledo garnered the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award last year. The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes NCAA and NAIA men s basketball teams that earned a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better throughout the academic year. Of the 131 teams to make the list, only 30 were NCAA Division I-affiliated programs. The Rockets posted a GPA during the Fall 2013 semester and a mark in the Spring 2014 semester. UT was the lone Mid-American Conference school to be included in the listing. ON THE HORIZON Toledo concludes its three-game homestand on Wednesday, Dec. 17 before visiting McNeese State on Saturday, Dec. 20.
