The Spiders will be looking for their third win over an FBS opponent in the past four seasons with a win over the Cavaliers on Saturday, having beaten Duke during both the 2009 and 2011 seasons. Storylines for Saturday s game include the Spiders facing their former head coach Mike London who led Richmond to a national title in 2008 and Richmond head coach Danny Rocco going against his nephew, Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco. QUICK SLANTS Richmond returns 13 starters from last year s team that went 3-8. The Spiders began the season very strong, beating Duke in the season opener on its way to a 3-0 start. Richmond struggled, however, in CAA conference play, going 0-8. Redshirt senior QB John Laub (pictured) earned the starting nod thanks to a strong camp for the Spiders, edging Virginia transfer Michael Strauss. Laub is 2-1 all-time as a starter, filling in for an injured Aaron Corp the final three games of the 2010 season. The Spiders boast seven players who earned preseason recognition before the start of 2012, including two players - FB Kendall Gaskins and LB Darius McMillan - who were named preseason All-Americans. Also, DB Cooper Taylor was named to the 2013 Senior Bowl Watch List. Despite being picked to finish ninth in the CAA in a poll conducted by the league s coaches, the Spiders received votes The Sports Network s first FCS Top 25 poll. Richmond is loaded with underclassmen entering the 2012 season. Of its 83 players, the Spiders have 23 true freshmen, 6 redshirt freshmen, 11 sophomores and 16 redshirt sophomores. In total, underclassmen make up an astounding 67.4 percent of the Richmond roster. LAST TIME OUT The Spiders ended the 2011 season with a tough, two-point loss to long-time rival William & Mary, Richmond held a late lead over the Tribe, but W&M scored a TD with just two seconds left to steal the win. FB Kendall Gaskins scored a pair of touchdowns for the Spiders, while LB Darius McMillan had a career-high 20 tackles, including six solo. Rocco came to Richmond from Liberty, where during his six-year tenure he amassed a record of 47-20, leading the Flames to four Big South conference titles from Rocco has shown a penchant for turning programs around. Posting a 1-10 record the year before his arrival at Liberty, Rocco led the Flames to a 6-5 mark during his first season. Familiar Face When the Spiders look across the field on Saturday, a familiar face will be looking back at them Virginia head coach Mike London. A 1983 graduate of Richmond, London was the head coach of his alma mater for two seasons ( ), leading the Spiders to a National Championship in 2008 and a record of 24-5 during his two years in charge of the program. Laub Named Starting Quarterback After four seasons serving as a backup, redshirt-senior John Laub was named Richmond s starting quarterback heading in to Saturday s game at Virginia. After backing up former All-CAA QB Eric Ward and USC transfer Aaron Corp, Laub beat out Virginia transfer Michael Strauss to get the starting nod against the Cavaliers in week one. Laub has started three previous times for Richmond, going 2-1 in the final three games of the 2010 season subbing for an injured Corp. Family Ties Richmond head coach Danny Rocco could see a very recognizable face under center for Virginia on Saturday, as Rocco s nephew Michael Rocco is battling for the starting quarterback spot for Virginia. Gaskins vs. Virginia Senior FB and preseason All-America selection Kendall Gaskins will look to duplicate the game he had last time out against Virginia in In that contest, the Burlington, N.J., native ran for 89 yards on eight carries including a 70-yard TD scamper. Gaskins also caught a pair of passes for 34 yards in the loss in Charlottesville. Taylor Named to Senior Bowl Watch List Richmond DB Cooper Taylor was named to the first-ever Senior Bowl Watch List on August 24. The list includes the nation s top seniors and NFL prospects from around the nation, as the top 100 seniors in the country will be invited to participate in the 2013 Senior Bowl, scheduled for Jan. 26 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. Taylor is one of just 29 players on the Senior Bowl Watch List from a non-fbs school and one of four selected from the CAA Football conference. Giant vs. Giant? Since the 2006 season, the Richmond Spiders have defeated three FBS teams. In 2006, the Spiders shut out Duke, Three years later, Richmond again took down Duke, beating the Blue Devils, Then last season, the Spiders defeated Duke for the third-straight time, 23-21, in Durham. Richmond s last win against Virginia came in the 1946 season. 2

The two teams will meet at least three more times in the near future 2014, 2016 and The Spiders will play N.C. State in 2013, Maryland in 2015, Boston College in 2017 and Virginia Tech in Five Spiders Named Team Captains for 2012 At the Spider spring game, seniors John Laub and Cooper Taylor were named team captains for the 2012 season. The true freshmen are WR Reggie Diggs, RB Jacobi Green and DB Ayo Ogunniyi. The only freshman slated to start against the Cavaliers is OL Sedale Young, a redshirt-freshman. Close Calls in 2011 During the 2011 season, Richmond lost four games by less than four points vs. New Hampshire (43-45), at Towson (28-31), vs. Maine (22-23) and vs. William & Mary (23-25). Prior to last season, the Spiders had won eight of its previous 10 games decided by four points or less. The Total Package No other team in CAA Football has won more conference titles since 1998 than Richmond. The Spiders have five to their credit ( 98, 00, 05, 07, 09), one more than Massachusetts and Delaware. In 2008, Richmond became just the second-ever private school to win the FCS National Championship, joining Furman (1998). But Richmond s success is not just on the field. The football program was one of just 25 D-I teams in 2007 to earn the NCAA s Public Recognition Award for the graduation rates of its football players and one of just 23 in 2008 before achieving it again in

9 The University of Richmond announced Tuesday Dec. 6, 2011, that Danny Rocco has been named the 35th head coach of the Spider Football program. A three-time Big South Coach of the Year as the head coach of Liberty who brings nearly 30 years of coaching experience to Richmond, Rocco was introduced at a press conference on Wednesday Dec. 7 in the Robins Center. I am pleased to welcome Coach Rocco and his family to the University of Richmond, said Richmond Athletic Director Jim Miller. He is an experienced coach with a proven record of leadership both on the field and in the community. Coach Rocco is the right fit for Spider Football in an important time for our program. I m very excited about the opportunity given to me by Jim Miller and President Ayers to be the head football coach at the University of Richmond, said Rocco. Richmond is a very impressive academic institution that combines the significance and importance of success on the field and in the classroom. The recent success of Richmond football excites me and I really can t wait to get to work returning the Spider program back to those winning ways. Rocco arrived at Liberty following the program s 1-10 finish in 2005 and transformed the program as the architect of six consecutive winning seasons with the Flames. During his first season in 2006, Liberty won five more games (6-5) than the previous year, an improvement that tied for the best FCS turnaround in the nation that season. As a result of his immediate impact on the program, Rocco was named Big South Coach of the Year for the first time in school history in 2006, the first of three straight years he would receive the honor. He would go on to be named a finalist for the national Eddie Robinson Award and Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award in each of the past three seasons. Since the team s stunning turnaround in 2006, Rocco s teams continued to dominate in the Big South Conference and beyond. The Flames have rolled to a overall record and an impressive 26-5 mark in Big South play under Rocco, winning no fewer than seven games in each of the past five seasons. Nationally, Liberty has finished the last four years ranked inside the Top 25 in both major FCS polls. During Rocco s six years at the helm in Lynchburg, the Flames captured their first-ever Big South Championship in 2007 and went on to win the next three conference titles as well. During this four-year span, Rocco had the third-highest winning percentage among FCS coaches nationally with his record (.756). Rocco s overall winning percentage of.702 ranks fifth in the nation among FCS coaches over the last 10 years of competition. Liberty was able to achieve and sustain such success under Rocco by winning on both sides of the ball. From , the Flames ranked first in the nation among FCS programs with scoring average per game while ranking seventh by allowing just points per game. The Flames were also the top-ranked team in FCS Football in turnover margin over the course of Rocco s first five seasons at Liberty. Rocco s players have undoubtedly exceled under his guidance. He has coached 97 Big South all-conference honorees and 19 players who have garnered All-America honors, including a pair of consensus All-Americans in running back Rashad Jennings (2008) and kicker Matt Begins (2009, 2010). DANNY ROCCO HEAD COACH First Season Wake Forest, 1984 Four of Rocco s student-athletes, Vince Redd (New England), Stephen Sene (St. Louis), Trey Jacobs (Washington) and Rashad Jennings (Jacksonville) have also gone on to play in the professional ranks in the National Football League. Jennings became Liberty s first NFL Draft selection in two decades when he was chosen in the seventh round by the Jaguars in Prior to his arrival at Liberty, Rocco spent the previous five seasons at Virginia, beginning in Here, he helped guide the Cavaliers to four-consecutive bowl appearances, including back-to-back Continental Tire Bowl victories in 2002 and 2003, and 37 overall wins alongside Al Groh as an assistant head coach and linebacker coach. Rocco would also serve as the Cavaliers recruiting coordinator his first year in Charlottesville. His 2002 recruiting class was ranked in the top 10 in the nation by many of the major recruiting services, including a fifth-place ranking by ESPN. Rocco would quickly be promoted to associate head coach while continuing to serve as linebackers coach. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Wake Forest. He spent the 1984 and 1985 seasons with the Demon Deacons before being hired as the defensive line coach before the 1986 season. Rocco was then hired by Colorado head coach Bill McCartney as an assistant linebackers coach for the 1987 season before heading to Tulsa to serve as the outside linebackers coach from He returned to the East Coast for the season to work for current New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin as his defensive line coach at Boston College, helping Coughlin revitalize the Golden Eagle s return to the national stage as participants in the 1992 Hall of Fame Bowl and the 1993 Carquest Bowl. Following his successful stint at Boston College, Rocco then served as the outside linebackers coach at the University of Texas at Austin, where the Longhorns captured three straight conference titles, including winning the inaugural Big 12 Championship in 1996 and earning bids to three consecutive bowl games (Sun Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl). His career would then continue at Maryland, where he served as the linebackers coach during the 1998 and 1999 seasons before reuniting with his mentor, Groh, as an assistant linebacker and special teams coach with the New York Jets for the team s 2000 campaign. He would then follow Groh to Virginia for the seasons. Rocco began his college playing career at Penn State, where he earned two varsity letters and competed in the 1979 Liberty Bowl and the 1980 Fiesta Bowl before transferring to Wake Forest. While in Winston-Salem, he was a two-year starter and senior captain for Groh. He was no stranger to coaching after growing up in a football family. His father, Frank Rocco, Sr., served as an assistant coach at Penn State under Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno before joining the Liberty staff for a six-year stint in Frank Rocco, Jr., also joined the Flames staff in 2000 as a wide receivers and quarterbacks coach and received a promotion to offensive coordinator prior to his departure in Both he and brother, Dave, both currently coach at the high school level in Virginia. A native of Huntingdon, Pa., Rocco is married to the former Julie Mills. They are the parents of two children, David (20) and Amy (18) SPIDER FOOTBALL GAME ONE AT VIRGINIA THE DANNY ROCCO FILE PLAYING HISTORY Penn State Linebacker for the Nittany Lions Wake Forest Linebacker; Team captain in 1983 COACHING HONORS Three-time Big South Coach of the Year Three-time Eddie Robinson Award Finalist Three-time Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Finalist AS A HEAD COACH Year School Record Conf.
