USD is making their 13th overall trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 2009 when the Toreros lost to No. 5 UC Santa Barbara 1-0 in the first round at USD. The Toreros won their first WCC title since 2009 with a 2-0 shutout at home over Saint Mary s in their second-to-last regular season game on Nov. 9. Head coach Seamus McFadden was named WCC Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his career. USD also had10 players selected to the All-WCC teams- three first-teamers, three second-teamers, three honorable mentions and one All-Freshman selection. Sr. F Patrick Wallen was named West Coast Conference Player of the Month for the month of October. He scored five goals in USD s six wins during the month and added an assist. Wallen moved into a tie for fourth place among USD s all-time goal scorers when he scored his 28th career goal in USD s 2-1 win over San Francisco on Oct. 26. Wallen is tied with Leighton O Brien ( ). Wallen also took over seventh place all-time in USD history in career pointshe now has 66 points in his career. The Toreros won eight games in a row from Sept. 30-Nov. 2, their longest winning streak since an 11-gamer in RS-So. GK Drew Ilijevski won his first eight starts in goal this season after taking over as the starter at Saint Mary s on Sept. 30. His first loss came at Portland this past on Nov. 4. UCLA played five ranked opponents this season and went in those matches. USD IN THE DANCE: The Toreros are all-time in 12 previous appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Their most recent appearance came in 2009 with a 1-0 firstround loss to UC Santa Barbara. USD s best finish in team history came in 1992 when the Toreros lost to Virginia 2-0 in the NCAA title game. USD has advanced past the first round on five occasions. HISTORY REPEATED: The Toreros have faced Big West opponents on five different occasions in the NCAA Tournament but this will be the first time they meet Cal State Northridge in the postseason. USD previously lost twice to UC Santa Barbara (2002 & 2009) and defeated Cal State Fullerton (1998) and lost to Fullerton twice (1993 & 1994). NAIL IN THE COFFIN: The Toreros won their seventh WCC title with a 2-0 victory over Saint Mary s at home on Nov. 9, clinching the championship in their second-to-last regular season game. Sr. M Dan Delgado scored the game-winner in that contest, while Fr. M Torrey DeArmas added the insurance goal. HONOR ROLL: Head coach Seamus McFadden was named WCC Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his career, while 10 Toreros were selected to the All-WCC teams. USD s six first- and secondteam selections were tied for the secondmost in team history. SENIOR SEND OFF: This year s ninemember senior class were freshmen the last time the Toreros advanced to the postseason. 2 in OCTOBER S BEST: Sr. F Patrick Wallen was named WCC Player of the Month for the month of October. His five goals during the month helped USD go in October. Wallen scored in three straight games at one point and notched two game winners. STEPPING ON THE GAS: The Toreros outscored their opponents in WCC play. That is a stark contrast to their non-conference slate in which USD was outscored USD s 22 goals in WCC play led the conference. In their 4-3 win over Portland on Oct. 5, USD established a season high in goals (4) and points (12) and tied their season high with 19 shots in the contest. LEAVING HIS MARK: Sr. F Patrick Wallen entered the 2012 campaign tied for seventh in USD history in career goals scored and moved into a tie for fourth all-time with his 28th career goal on Oct. 26. Wallen had a careerhigh 12 goals in 2010 and scored three goals in USD s all-time leader in goals scored is Guillermo Jara, who scored 51 goals from CARPE DIEM: RS-So. GK Drew Ilijevski, RS- So. F Sergio Lopez and Fr. M Torrey DeArmas have made the most out of their opportunities to climb into the starting lineup. Ilijevski took over as the starter in goal on Sept. 30 and proceeded to collect wins in his first eight starts, while going on to be an All-WCC honorable mention selection. Lopez has started every game since Sept. 30 after opening the season on the bench and was named WCC Player of the Week on Oct. 8. Meanwhile, DeArmas joined the starting lineup at the beginning of WCC play and has two goals and an assist as a WCC All-Freshman team honoree.

HEAD COACH SEAMUS MCFADDEN: McFadden earned his 300th career victory in 2008 joining an elite group of coaches who have achieved such a milestone. With a career coaching record of , McFadden is also a member of an even more prestigious group of coaches who have accumulated that many career wins at the same institution. No. 300 came on October 26, 2008 in front of a home crowd against Loyola Marymount as the Toreros defeated the Lions 3-0. With all of the success enjoyed by the Torero soccer teams it is easy to overlook the remarkable job Coach Seamus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. McFadden has been named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year a record seven times (2000, `99, 98, 95, 94, 92, 86); won six WCC championships; has coached eight WCC Defensive Players of the Year, nine WCC Offensive Players of the Year and five WCC Freshmen of the Year. In 2009, McFadden guided the Toreros to their most recent WCC championship with a (8-2-2 WCC) record and their 12th NCAA tournament appearance. Prior to 2009, the Toreros made six consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 1998 to In 2003 his squad went , placed second in the highly competitive WCC, and reached the second round of the NCAA tourney. In 2002 he directed USD to a 14-6 mark and first round appearance in the NCAA tourney. In 2001 the Toreros went and in 2000 he directed his Toreros to a record, another WCC title and its eighth trip to the NCAAs since That season the Toreros reached a national ranking as high as third before finishing the season a program-best 10th overall. McFadden arrived at USD in 1979 and fielded USD s first team in the fall of That same year he was quoted in the team s yearbook as saying: I have no doubts that in the near future the University of San Diego will become a force to be reckoned with in Southern California intercollegiate soccer. How prophetic his words turned out to be. The 1986 Toreros won 19 of 24 games. The 1990 squad, led by the first of McFadden s four All-Americans, dropped just three games the entire season and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Those who know McFadden closely could see the writing on the wall many years earlier, when the Irishman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same time guiding Clairemont High to consecutive CIF-San Diego Section titles and the La Jolla Cup. The whole puzzle came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several of San Diego s best local talent. Student-athletes, who in the past had looked outside the city to showcase their talents, were suddenly arriving at Alcalá Park. The 1992 Toreros showed remarkable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and advancing to the NCAA Championship Game. The 55-year-old McFadden seems to save his best coaching for the big games. Twice the Toreros have marched onto UCLA s home turf and walked away with stunning upsets over the heavily-favored Bruins. In 1994, USD shutout No. 6 ranked N.C. State, 3-0, in front of a national cable television audience. In 1998, USD upset Cal State Fullerton, the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, at Titan Stadium in first round action. In 1999 the Toreros defeated then No. 1-ranked Santa Clara on the road, 2-1 in overtime. USD is 8-10 in NCAA Tournament games under McFadden s direction. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden took the 1997 squad on a trip to his homeland, Ireland during the summer for exhibition games against Ireland and Britain s elite. In the summer of 2002 he is took his players to England. A native of Donegal, Ireland, Séamus and his wife Davette have two daughters (Hadley & Rorye) and a son (Conor). The McFaddens reside in Rancho Penasquitos. 3
