22 Summertime for a Mid The summer months is when Midshipmen at the Naval Academy have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the Navy or Marine Corps. Besides having the opportunity to go home, over the summer Midshipmen are scattered all over the world visiting a number of ships and bases to learn about the different communities available to them in the Fleet. Following are some of the pictures from, thoughts about and experiences of the members of the basketball team during the Summer of I spent two weeks on the USS PONCE and was a Squad Leader for 17th platoon for the second set of Plebe Summer. I went on PROTRAMID where each week we experienced a new service selection. I did an abundance of exciting things including repelling down a three-story building, shooting various rifles, flying in a SH-60 helicopter, and flying in a T-34 plane. I had a cruise on a Destroyer from Hawaii to San Diego. Since I m a senior, I followed an officer around to learn what it was like for the officers on board. We were underway for 15 days. I was able to learn a lot on the cruise! 30 NAVYSPORTS.COM 30

23 I was on a Destroyer for two weeks and I learned the job of my enlisted running mate. It was a good experience because it gave me the opportunity to see how the fleet runs and operates. I learned a lot about myself and the Navy this past summer. I am already looking forward to next summer. I worked with my teammates and coaches at the Navy basketball camp. It was tons of work and long days, but by far the most fun and rewarding work I have ever done. It was awesome to be able to teach others and watch them progress because of your advice and coaching. I was on a LHD 1 named the WASP. I boarded it in Earl, N.J., and then went underway for four days while we traveled to Norfolk, Va. 31 NAVYSPORTS.COM 31

24 I was on the DDG 94 Nitze. I shadowed a Yeoman all day to see what it was like on the administrative side of the Navy. I also helped with the Navy basketball camp. I spent a month on a ship in San Diego. It was named the USS Sterett and was a destroyer recently commissioned in I was placed in the Navigation-Administration department, where we worked on the charts leaving and entering the harbor, and did a lot of paperwork for the rest of the crew. Of the four weeks I was on the ship, we were underway for two, and in port in San Diego for two. My cruise placed me onboard the USS Gonzalez, a Navy Destroyer. During my three weeks on the ship I shadowed someone from medical corps. It allowed me to learn a lot about the medical procedures that take place on ships. I also was able to witness events such as flight operations and manoverboard procedures, and visited other ships that were stationed at the harbor. 32 NAVYSPORTS.COM 32
