4 SEASON OUTLOOK As Tom Marryott scanned his roster prior to the start of the season, his first as the Navy mentor, he saw a veteran lineup with four returning starters and a team which totaled nearly 600 career games played and nearly 4,000 career points scored. Last season s Navy team began the year with just one returning starter and a squad which tallied half as many career appearances. This season s roster can be considered a mix of Marryott s first two teams as the squad features the return of a trio of starters and six of the top-eight scorers from last year s unit which advanced to the semifinal round of the Patriot League Tournament. With a number of the key pieces to the puzzle which produced postseason success last year returning, Navy s team aims for more than just a taste of the postseason. It was nice to advance to the semifinal round of the 2005 Patriot League Tournament, but our ultimate goal is to play additional games in March, said Marryott. In that respect, we didn t achieve everything we set out to at the start of last season. To advance on this year we need to continue improving as both individuals and as a team. To that end, these players have made a tremendous commitment to both their conditioning and individual improvement in a strong first step to meeting our goals. After winning just two of its opening six Patriot League games one year ago, Navy closed the campaign with a flurry, posting wins in five of its seven games prior to the semifinal round loss to Holy Cross In Worcester. I was happy with the improvement we made throughout last year and I felt we made great strides in a number of areas, said Marryott. As the season progressed we developed into a pretty good rebounding team, we took better care of the ball while playing at a faster tempo and you could see the pride Team Captain Ashley Pelzek building in our defense. As I look forward to the start of this season, I feel if we can continue to build on the foundation of our rebounding and defense and take even care of the basketball, I expect some even bigger victories for us. LEADERSHIP One of the guiding pillars of the Naval Academy is to build leaders, and Marryott is the beneficiary of a strong trio of leaders found in his senior class of Meredith Addington, Lauren Skrel and team captain Ashley Pelzek. He, and their classmates, will look towards them to help guide the team on and off the court throughout their final year on The Yard. I have been extremely proud of the teamwork and dedication we have shown in our preseason workouts and that can be directly attributed to our senior class, said Marryott. They are the trio organizing workouts and pushing everyone to provide their maximum effort. As a group they have been focused and determined to push themselves and their teammates. Senior Lauren Skrel ROSTER BREAKDOWN Perhaps no group of players on the team will look towards the senior trio for more daily guidance than the foursome of freshmen who have been added to the roster during the offseason. Emily Cordle,Whitney Davidson, Kalen Kropa and Emily Lyren all have adjustments to make to the Naval Academy and to the basketball team, but much is expected of them as both midshipmen and as contributors to the team. I am very pleased with our newcomers, said Marryott. First of all, and most importantly, they have adjusted well to the rigors of being plebes. The next step is for them to adjust to the rigors of being Division I basketball players. They have a lot to learn, but they couldn t have a better group of teammates and midshipmen to learn from. This is a very talented group of freshmen. Combining the quality of the newcomers with the experience of the returning players leads Marryott to believe he will have a nice balance on the offensive end of the floor and toughness throughout the 94-feet of defense. I feel we have a nice mix of offensive weapons, both on the perimeter and inside the lane, said Marryott. I am hopeful we will be 4 The Season

5 be a difficult team to defend, as long as we are able to make adjustments and take what the defense gives us. I think we need to become a better team on defense. Last year we didn t make defensive stops in critical situations. We will need to do a better job of that this year. Navy has the luxury of returning a pair of starters in the backcourt in Skrel and Pelzek, as well as its top bench player from last year in Carly Meyer. We have a nice blend of proven experience to go along with talented newcomers in the backcourt, said Marryott. A quintet of returning players comprise Navy s front court, with Kate Hobbs the lone returning starter. Hobbs is the only returning player to start all 29 games last year and averaged 8.2 points and 4.7 rebounds a game last season, while the other four players Addington, Betsy Burnett, Lindi Conner and Lauren Nelson together totaled only 81 points and less than 100 rebounds on the year. Kate and Betsy have proven themselves to be good defenders and offensive threats, while Meredith has shown marked improvement, said Marryott. Lindi and Lauren have shown flashes of what they can do and I am confident they will be consistent contributors this season. Skrel excelled during her first season of running the Navy offense last year, leading the league with 159 assists and averaging a ratio of assists to turnovers. Pelzek also had a successful first season as a mainstay among Navy s starting five, knocking down nearly a pair of threepoint field goals a game and totaling just under 100 caroms on the year. Meyer, meanwhile, is not only Navy s top returning offensive threat from a year ago, the guard/forward is also the leading returning rebounder with an average of 4.9 boards a game a year ago. Lauren really makes the team go, while Ashley and Carly are both proven scorers, said Marryott. A trio of versatile players in returner Ali Currier and freshmen Kalen Kropa and Emily Cordle will add depth throughout the backcourt this year, while newcomers Whitney Davidson and Emily Lyren have the ability to contribute at shooting guard. Also, Marryott looks for Margaret Knap to join Meyer in playing the small forward position. OPPONENTS To help prepare Navy for the challenging Patriot League season, Marryott has put together a preseason schedule featuring teams from eight different conferences located up-and-down the East Coast. We have a nice mix of teams prior to the start of the Patriot League schedule, said Marryott. I am hoping the vastly different styles of basketball we will see will teach us how to adapt and adjust. If we can come out of the preseason with that ability, then the schedule will have accomplished its goal of preparing us for the Patriot League season and the teams we will face. Once the league slate of games does commence, Navy will find itself as one team in a conference which only seems to become more talented and more balanced. I have been impressed with the level of talent in the league and also with the quality of the coaching, said Marryott. The league lost some terrific players due to graduation, but each team has brought in a strong recruiting class to offset their losses. In addition, there are some very talented returning players who no doubt have worked hard and improved since we last saw them in March. I expect the level of play will be high and that each contest will be a terrific game. Junior Kate Hobbs The Season 5
