After posting a 6-8 Patriot League record during his initial season with the program, Marryott guided a lineup last year consisting of just one returning starter and only three players who had scored more than 100-career points to an identical 6-8 record and to the program s first victory in the Patriot League Tournament in six years. While he has been working with the women s program for only a brief period of time, Marryott is no stranger to Naval Academy basketball, having served as an assistant coach with the men s program since the fall of Navy made three Patriot League championship game appearances and reached the 1998 NCAA Touament during his five years with the program. The Midshipmen also won a pair of league regular-season titles and amassed an overall record during his stint with the team. Prior to his beginning his tenure at the Naval Academy, Marryott served as both head coach and athletic director for 10 seasons at the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I. His basketball teams recorded a (.623) record in that decade, during which time he coached future Naval Academy standouts Hassan Booker, Skip Victor, Jehiel Lewis, Victor Mickjel and Matt Sladky. A 1985 graduate of Castleton (Vt.) State, Marryott helped lead the Spartans to the NAIA Tournament during his final season and was inducted into the school s athletic hall of fame in He began his coaching career by serving as a graduate assistant at Vermont during the season. After then spending one season as an assistant coach at Genesse Community College (Batavia, N.Y.), he joined the staff at Providence for the season. 5 Game Notes The Navy women s basketball team will play the first of three-straight road games Sunday when the Midshipmen travel to Brooklyn, N.Y., to face St. Francis in a 2 p.m. game. The Mids have posted a 2-1 record on the year, while the Terriers are 0-3 on the season. Navy Review Navy opened the home portion of its schedule Tuesday night with an victory over North Carolina A&T. After trailing at halftime by a combined 16 points during its first two games to Florida Atlantic and Monmouth, the Midshipmen jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead over the Aggies, The Navy lead grew to 20 points midway through the second half until N.C. A&T slowly worked the margin down to nine points with three minutes to play. Ashley Pelzek connected on one of her five three-point field goals with 2:46 left to play to push the lead back to 12 points and Navy led by double figures over the waning moments of the game. Pelzek led all players with a career-high 23 points, with Carly Meyer adding the second double-double of her career with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Meyer also tallied four of Navy s nine blocked shots, a career high for the junior and the most team blocks in 11 years. Lauren Skrel helped the Navy offense shoot 48.4-percent from the field by dishing out 13 assists, a new career high, a new Alumni Hall record and one helper shy of tying the 20- year old school record. St. Francis Preview The Terriers are 0-3 on the season following a setback to Lafayette Wednesday night. Sunday s game against the Mids will be the home opener for St. Francis. St. Francis is being outscored on the year, points per game. The Terriers are shooting a nearly 40 percent from the field, but have connected on only 27.8 percent of their three-point attempts and are shooting only 50 percent from the foul line. Tiffany Hill leads the squad in scoring at 18.3 points per game, and she is joined in double figures by Katja Bavendam at 12.0 ppg. Deanna Petrucci is the top rebounder for the Terriers at 6.7 rebounds per game. Navy vs. St. Francis Sunday s game will be the sixth in the series between the Mids and the Terriers and the first in nearly two years. Navy has won each of the five previous contests, including both games played in Brooklyn. In the last meeting, Dec. 31, 2003, in Annapolis, Navy posted a victory over St. Francis. Both teams have three players on their respective rosters who appeared in the 2003 contest. The victory also improved Navy s all-time record in home openers to The Mids have scored 80 points in winning each of their three home openers under head coach Tom Marryott. Meredith Addington, Ashley Pelzek and Lauren Skrel will be commissioned as ensigns in the Navy in May and will train to become pilots. What they will fly will be determined after several stages of flight school. Helping Hand Lauren Skrel dished out a career-high 13 assists Nov. 22 against North Carolina A&T. The 13 helpers breaks the Alumni Hall record of 12 (Maile Shimoda, Navy, vs. Lafayette, Feb. 1, 2004) and was one shy of tying the Navy single-game record. 6 Game Notes Three-Straight Road Games Sunday marks the beginning of threestraight road games for the Mids, the first of three times this year Navy will play threestraight games away from home. Only once this year will Navy play as many as three-straight home games, and that is Dec. 6-Jan. 2 when the Mids play six-straight contests in Alumni Hall. She began the year by scoring 13 points against Florida Atlantic, then connected on five three-point field goals in scoring 19 points against Monmouth. In Navy s last game against North Carolina A&T, Pelzek connected on five triples for the second-straight game and totaled a career-high 23 points. Her 13 three-pointers this year raises her career total to 72 and moves her into the top 10 in Navy history. Most Navy 3-Pt. FGM in Career Hilary Goodrich, Patty LiPoma, Ashley Pelzek, 2003-pres. Blocked Shots Navy s season high for blocked shots in a game last year was five. Tuesday night against North Carolina A&T, the Mids totaled nine blocked shots. The nine rejections was just three away from tying the school record of 12 and was the most rejections in a game in 11 years. Carly Meyer alone tallied four of the blocked shots, tying the Navy junior class record and finishing just two shy of tying the school record. Meyer and classmate Kate Hobbs both rank among the all-time leaders in career blocked shots at Navy. Post Play Navy entered the season with three of its post players having received little playing time in their careers. After not appearing in any games two years ago as a freshman, Betsy Burnett totaled 23 points and 54 rebounds in 23 games last season as a sophomore, while classmates Lindi Conner and Lauren Nelson combined to score 38 points and haul in 31 caroms in 17 games last season as freshmen. A&T is a very tough team to play against with their unusual and aggressive trap.
