The game ended a six-game homestand for the Mids in which they posted a 5-1 record. I The Mids closed the game on a run over the last nine minutes to come away with the victory. I Navy s reserves fueled the comeback as the bench players accounted for 32 of the team s 39 second half points. I This weekend s games marks the first time Navy will both play a game in the state of Oregon and face a team from the state. I Navy has made six previous trips to the West Coast to play a total of eight games. I Navy has not faced a team from the Big Sky Conference before and has played two previous games against teams from the Pacific 12 Conference. I Friday s game will be No. 200 for Stefanie Pemper as the head coach of the Mids. 2 2 U.S. Naval Academy Information The U.S. Naval Academy As the undergraduate college of the Naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and reserve commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years as Navy or Marine Corps officers. Founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Academy started as the Naval School on 10 acres of old Fort Severn in Annapolis with an original class of 55. In 1850 the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effect requiring midshipmen to study at the Academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer. Congress authorized the Naval Academy to begin awarding bachelor of science degrees in Today, the Academy offers 18 major fields of study, a wide variety of elective courses and advanced study and research opportunities. USNA Mission Statement To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future deployment in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government. Participation, Community Service 91% Midshipman The word midshipman first appeared in English in the 17th century in the form of the word midshipman to designate those men who were stationed amidships, i.e. in the waist or middle portion of the vessel, while on duty. By 1687, however, the second s had been dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were originally boys, sometimes as young as seven or eight, who were apprenticed to sea captains to learn the sailor s trade. In the early days of the American Navy, midshipmen trained aboard ship until they were eventually commissioned as ensigns. With the founding of the Naval Academy in 1845, it became possible, as it still is, for a midshipman to enter the Navy directly from civilian life. The name of students at the Naval Academy changed several times between 1870 and 1902, when Congress restored the original title of Midshipman, and it has remained unchanged since. Women at USNA Women were first admitted to the service academies during the summer of Currently, women comprise 21% of the 4,400-member Brigade of Midshipmen. Graduation Success Rate It was announced on Oct. 24, 2013, that for the ninth year in a row, the United States Naval Academy is at the head of the class for graduating NCAA student-athletes on the Division IA level. Navy graduated 100 percent of its student-athletes in 5 of the 21 NCAA sports reported on and averaged an overall rate of 90 percent for student-athletes in all sports tied for the 10th-best mark nationally among Football Bowl Subdivision schools for those students enrolled from Academic Majors Students at the Naval Academy can select one of 24 different majors, as well as attain a minor in one of seven languages. Regardless of the major selected, all graduates receive a Bachelor s of Science degree. Navy endured a pair of lengthy scoring droughts in the first half 6:39, 8:44 which allowed Towson to go on 6-0 and 15-0 runs, respectively, and take a lead at the break. The Tigers went on another 8-0 run early in the second half and eventually built a advantage with nine minutes remaining. The Mids finally found their shooting touch and took a lead with three minutes left on the clock. After a Towson field goal, Peri Curtis banked in a three-point shot to give the Mids a lead with 1:23 left to go. Ashanti Kennedy scored on Navy s next possession (53-49), and the combination of good defense and free throws helped the Mids salt away the victory. The Vikings also have suffered losses to Seattle, South Dakota and Corban. The Vikings posted an 8-21 record last season and tied for ninth place in the Big Sky Conference with a 6-14 record. Portland State was predicted to place 11th in the Big Sky this season. Friday s game will be the inaugural meeting between Navy and Portland State. Condie vs. UNCG Condie s career high last only until the end of the very next game as she scored 11 points against UNCG on Nov. 28. She did not miss a shot against the Spartans as she was 2-2 from the field and 7-7 from the free throw stripe. Condie scored four of her points in the last 73 seconds of the game, first sinking a layup to give the Mids a lead with 1:13 to go and then converting a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left to boost the Navy advantage out to two possessions at Peri Curtis vs. Mary Washington After being held scoreless in Navy s opening two games of the season, Peri Curtis connected on 5-9 shots form the field including 2-4 from three-point range in scoring a career-high 15 points Nov. 20 against Mary Washington. Curtis vs. George Mason Curtis had another good shooting night Nov. 25 against George Mason as she made 4-10 shots from the field in scoring 10 points. Curtis vs. UNCG In addition to scoring seven points Nov. 28 vs. UNCG, Curtis also dished out a career-high six assists against the Spartans. Curtis vs. Towson Curtis connected on 5-12 shots from the field in scoring a game-high 12 points in Navy s Dec. 2 victory over Towson. Her banked three-point field goal with less than 90 seconds remaining gave the Mids a lead, then she salted the game away with a free throw with less than two seconds to play in the game. It marked the first time in her career in which she led Navy in scoring in a game. Taylor Dunham at Navy Classic Taylor Dunham entered the Nov Navy Classic with having appeared in just two of Navy s first five games of the year while totaling four points, two assists and one rebound in eight minutes of playing time. She would go on to score 13 points (11 in the second half) and dish out six assists (five in the second half) in 23 minutes of playing time against UNCG. She was 4-8 from the floor against the Spartans, which included a 2-3 effort from three-point land. The following day, she took to the court for just 16 minutes, but again led the Mids with 13 points while adding four caroms. Dunham led the Mids and ranked second in the tournament field in scoring despite ranking 21st on the weekend in minutes played. She was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts. Dunham vs. Towson Dunham again played a large role in Navy s Dec. 2 victory over Towson. After being held scoreless in seven minutes of playing time in the first half, she tallied 11 points, three assists and three rebounds in 14 minutes of playing time in the second half.

8 8 Game Notes Hannah Fenske Assists Hannah Fenske is averaging just over 17 minutes of playing time this season (17.9), but has dished out three or more assists in four games. This includes four helpers in 16 minutes at North Carolina A&T, five assists in 16 minutes versus Penn and four assists in 22 minutes against George Mason. Overall, she is handing out an average of 2.3 assists a game. Ashanti Kennedy vs. Mary Washington Ashanti Kennedy totaled 11 points and three rebounds during the entire season, but accrued 12 points and five boards Nov. 20 against Mary Washington. Kennedy was 2-5 from the floor and 8-10 from the foul line against the Eagles. Kennedy vs. Towson Kennedy didn t take to the court in the first half of Navy s Dec. 2 game against Towson, but she played a very productive 16 second-half minutes to help the Mids rally for a win. She made 3-6 field goal attempts and was 3-4 from the foul line to score nine points after halftime, while also contributing three boards and two steals. Marina Muenster Rebounding Marina Muenster has snared at least four boards in five games this season. This is despite her playing no more than 17 minutes in any of the games. Her high for caroms was seven on Nov. 20 against Mary Washington when she played 13 minutes. Danielle Poblarp at N.C. A&T and Elon Danielle Poblarp scored four points during the entire season, but tallied 16 points in the first two games of the campaign. She opened the year by scoring five points Nov. 14 at North Carolina A&T, then scored 11 points while dishing out four assists two days later at Elon. Poblarp vs. Penn and George Mason Poblarp connected on a trio of three-point field goals in back-to-back games against Penn and George Mason. She was 3-6 from beyond the arc in both games on her way to scoring nine points against the Quakers and 13 points against the Patriots. Poblarp also added a total of eight assists over the two games. Sarah Reilly Early Sarah Reilly put together a strong start to her collegiate career. She scored 10 or more points in four of her first five games, shot a minimum of 50 percent from the floor three times and grabbed at least four boards in each of the five games. This includes her sinking 5-7 shots from the floor in scoring 16 points and hauling in 12 boards 8 on the offensive end (T-6 in Navy history) against Mary Washington.
