2 U.S. Naval Academy Information Page 2 Naval Academy at the Head of the Class for Graduation Rates For the second year in a row, the United States Naval Academy is at the head of the class for graduating NCAA student-athletes on the Division IA level. Navy graduated 100 percent of its student-athletes in 16 of the 19 sports reported on and no sport graduated lower than 97 percent. Our student-athletes continually strive to set the standard on the playing fields, in the classroom and in Bancroft Hall, said Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. The support and encouragement they receive through the Commandant and his staff and the academic dean s office is extraordinary and provides tremendous motivation to be successful across the board. We are all proud to be leaders on the field, but even more so when we can prove to be leaders in the classroom as well. It clearly defines the true meaning of student-athlete. The Academy moved its location to Newport, R.I., from during the Civil War. Originally just 10 acres, The Yard has grown to a size of 338 acres. Anchors Aweigh Anchors Aweigh was written by Lt. Charles Zimmerman, musical director of the Naval Academy, in 1906, with the lyrics provided by Alfred H. Miles 06 as a fight song for the 1907 graduating class. The song made its debut at the 1906 Army-Navy game and when the Mids won, the song became traditional at the contest. Stand Navy down the field, Sails set to the sky, We ll never change our course, So Army you steer shy. Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh, Sail Navy down the field, And sink the Army, sink the Army Grey Brigade of Midshipmen The 4,000-member student body at the Naval Academy is called the Brigade of Midshipmen. The Brigade is organized into: 2 regiments 6 battalions 30 companies Bill the Goat The first recorded use of a goat as the mascot for Navy teams was in 1893 when an animal named El Cid (the Chief) was presented to the Brigade by officers of the USS New York. El Cid helped Navy to a 6-4 win over Army that year and a goat became the permanent mascot of the Academy in Class Ranks Freshmen -- Fourth Class Year, Plebes Sophomores -- Third Class Year, Youngsters Juniors -- Second Class Year Seniors -- First Class Year, Firsties Co-Ed Thirty years ago this year, during the 1976 summer, women were first admitted to the Naval Academy. Today, women comprise roughly 15 percent of the student body. Marine Corps Graduates of the Naval Academy entering the Marine Corps (commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants) have the following service options available to them... Aviation -- air command and control, anti-air warfare, aviation maintenance, aviation supply, pilot, naval flight officer. Ground -- armor*, artillery*, communications (information systems), engineering, financial management, infantry*, logistics, military police (* not available to women) Midshipman The original 17th Century meaning of the word midshipsmen designated those men who stood watch amidships, or in the middle portion of a ship. The middle s was later dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were originally young boys who were apprenticed to sea captains to learn the trade. In the early days of the Navy, midshipmen were trained aboard ship until they were commissioned as ensigns. Navy Graduates of the Naval Academy entering the Navy (commissioned as Ensigns) have the following service options available to them... Aviation -- flight officer, pilot Nuclear Propulsion -- ships, submarines* Restricted Line and Staff Corps -- civil engineering, cryptology, intelligence, maintenance, medicine, meteorology/oceanography, supply Special Operations -- explosive ordinance disposal, explosive ordinance management, mine countermeasures, operational diving and salvage, Navy SEALs* Surface Warfare -- conventional, nuclear powered Submarines* (* not available to women) Nickname The official nickname for all of Navy s athletic teams is Midshipmen. Mids is an appropriate abbreviation, while Middie is inappropriate. N-Star Members of varsity teams who qualify for the varsity letter receive an N-Star for their letter sweaters if they participate in a victory over Army in any sport-designated Star Game. The varsity N and corresponding N-Star were initiated during the early 1890s.

9 Game Notes Page 9 The Navy women s basketball team will look for its first win of the season this weekend when the Midshipmen travel to South Orange, N.J., to take part in the Seton Hall Basketball Classic. The Mids (0-2) will open the tournament Friday at 8 p.m. against Massachusetts (2-0), then will play either Howard (0-3) or tournament-host Seton Hall (1-1) Saturday. The consolation game of the tournament will begin at 1 p.m., with the championship game slated to follow at 3 p.m. Live statistics for both of Navy s games this weekend can be found through the Gametracker feature found on either the Navy or Seton Hall web sites. Navy s game Friday against Massachusetts can be heard on the UMass student radio station WMAU-FM 91.1, as well as on its web site at Should Navy face Seton Hall Saturday, the game can be heard on Navy Recap The Mids struggled during their opening games of the season, losing Nov. 10 at Ohio and then again two days later at home against Marshall. Navy opened its season by dropping a decision to the Bobcats. After Navy took a 9-8 lead in the game, the Bobcats outscored the Mids over the remainder of the half to take a advantage at halftime. The Mids converted only one fewer field goal than Ohio did in the first half, but the Bobcats sank five additional three-point field goals and free throws during the opening 20 minutes of play. Margaret Knap led Navy with 12 points in the game, the lone Mid to tally double figures, while Carly Meyer finished with seven points, seven caroms and three blocks. Navy had a much better first half two days later against Marshall. Despite shooting just 31.3 percent from the field, including a 1-of-10 performance from behind the three-point line, the Mids found themselves trailing by just four points (29-25) at halftime. Navy s offensive woes returned when the teams took to the court to start the second half. The Mids misfired on 15 of their first 16 shots from the field to start the half, while Marshall tallied buckets on seven of its opening 14 shots from the field to take a lead with 9:19 left in the game. The Mids shot just 25.4 percent from the field and made only 3-of-24 three-point attempts on the afternoon, while Marshall converted 53.8 percent of field goal attempts in the game and dominated the boards with a advantage on the glass. Lauren Nelson came off the bench to convert 4-of- 9 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws to tally a career-high 13 points and share Navy scoring honors with Kate Hobbs. Massachusetts Preview The Minutewomen have a perfect 2-0 record after the opening weekend of the season, with convincing victories to date over Vermont (60-48) and New Hampshire (60-38). Massachusetts returns four starters and eight letterwinners from last year s team which posted an overall record and tied for sixth place in the Atlantic 10 with an 8-8 record. The squad returns each of its three players who scored in double figures last year in Pam Rosanio (12.5 ppg), Kate Mills (12.4 ppg) and Tamara Tatham (10.0 ppg), with the trio also averaging a combined 16.6 rebounds a game on the year. This season, Mills leads the team in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds a game, respectively. Rosanio ranks second to Mills in scoring at 13.5 points per game, with Tatham placing second on the glass with 9.5 caroms a contest. Opponents are averaging 5.5 three-point field goals made a game against Massachusetts, but are shooting just 20.8 percent from behind the three-point arc. Massachusetts has totaled 33 assists on its 38 field goals this year. The Minutewomen also hold a rebounds-per-game advantage this year. Series Notes Friday s game will mark the first meeting between Navy and Massachusetts. Misc. Records vs. Massachusetts The Minutewomen will become just the second team Navy will have faced from the state of Massachusetts. The only other team from the state the Mids have played is fellow Patriot League-member school Holy Cross. Conference Comparison With the game Friday, Navy will have played seven of the 14 Atlantic-10 member schools. The Mids have posted a record against the A-10. Navy will be the fifth team from the Patriot League the Minutewomen will have faced in their history, with the school entering the game with a 9-10 record against the Patriot League. The Mids are 0-2 against Atlantic 10 schools under Tom Marryott, with both losses coming to St. Bonaventure. Howard Preview The Bison enter Friday s game against Seton Hall with an 0-3 record on the young season. Those three setbacks came in a span of three days to Virginia Tech (97-78), LSU (88-44) and West Virginia (84-61). The Bison posted a record last year and placed fourth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with a 10-8 record. Howard returns only a pair of starters from last year s team, but three of its top-four scorers from a year ago return in Shannon Carlisle (No. 1, 12.8 ppg), Melloni Benson (No. 2, 12.2 ppg) and Christina Aden (No. 4, 9.8 ppg). Carlisle leads the Bison in scoring this year with an average of 19.7 points per game, with Aden ranking second at 14.3 points per game. The duo have scored 102 of Howard s 183 points this year (55.7%). Carlisle and Sequoya Moore lead the team in rebounding with 4.7 rebounds a game apiece. Howard is not only averaging 9.0 three-point field goals made a game, it also is shooting an impressive 34.6 percent from behind the three-point arc. Aden has made 9-of-23 three-point attempts this year (39.1%), with Carlisle shooting 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from behind the line. What has hurt the Bison this year has been the free throw line where opponents have already made 57 more trips to the foul line than Howard has (105-48). Series Notes Although the two schools are separated by roughly 30 miles, Navy and Howard have met on only three previous occasions and not since Dec. of The Bison have won each of the last two games in the series to hold a 2-1 advantage. Misc. Records vs. Washington, D.C. Navy has faced seven different teams from Washington, D.C. American, Catholic, Dist. of Columbia, Gallaudet, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard and has posted a record in games against programs from our nation s capital. The Mids are slated to play both American and Georgetown later this year. Conference Comparison Navy has compiled a record against teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Mids have posted a 4-2 record against MEAC teams under Tom Marryott, including a 2-1 record last year. Howard, meanwhile, is all time against the Patriot League.

10 Game Notes Page 10 Seton Hall Preview Tournament-host Seton Hall has split its opening two games of the season, losing a decision to Kansas and posting a victory over Missouri State. All five starters and 10 of Seton Hall s 12 letterwinners from a year ago return this year. The Pirates posted a 6-21 overall record during the campaign and tied for 13th place in the Big East Conference with a 3-13 record. Heta Korpivaara, who averaged 10.1 points a game last year, is the top point producer for the Pirates this year at 20.0 points per game. She has converted 15-of-23 field goals this year (65.2%) and is 10-of-12 from the foul line (83.3%). After leading the team in scoring last year with an average of 11.9 points per game, Monique Blake ranks second on the team this year with a mark of 9.0 points a game this year. Blake and Korpivaara also stand 1-2 in rebounding this year with averages of 7.5 and 6.0 rebounds a game, respectively. As one would think befitting a team with a 1-1 record, Seton Hall and its opponents have posted nearly identical team stats this year, with the only significant difference coming in blocks where the Hall has tallied 10 rejections to just two by its foes. Series Notes The only other meeting between the Mids and the Pirates came Dec. 21, 2003, in the title game of the Navy Classic. Seton Hall held a 19-rebound margin (51-32) in recording a victory over the Midshipmen. Current Players who Played in First Navy-SH Game Navy Carly Meyer 8 min., 0 pts., 5 rebs. Kate Hobbs 17 min., 0 pts., 1 reb. Seton Hall Monique Blake 25 min., 9 pts., 11 rebs. Heta Korpivaara 26 min., 6 pts., 3 rebs. Amber Harris 1 min. Misc. Records vs. New Jersey Navy has posted a 5-6 record against teams from New Jersey Monmouth, Princeton, Saint Peter s, Seton Hall and has posted a 3-5 all-time record in games played in the Garden State. The Mids have previously competed in tournaments in New Jersey during the (Princeton) and (Seton Hall) seasons. Conference Comparison Navy has posted a 4-10 record against the current members of the Big East Conference. Later this year the Mids will also play Big East-member schools Georgetown and Marquette. Seton Hall, meanwhile, has compiled a 12-5 against the Patriot League. Navy is 2-2 against teams from the Big East under Tom Marryott. Third Game Has Been a Charm The Mids have posted an 11-1 record in its third game of the season over the last 12 years and have an all-time record of 25-4 in the third game of a year. In each of the six previous times in school history Navy has started a campaign with an 0-2 record (1981, 82, 85, 91, 2000, 04), the Mids have won the third game of the year. Tournament Time This weekend s tournament will mark the 56th time Navy has taken part in a regular season tournament, as well as for the second time at Seton Hall. The Mids have posted a record in those tournaments (0-2 at Seton Hal) and have claimed 17 tournament titles. Navy is competing in its fifth tournament under Tom Marryott, compiling a 4-5 record during this time. One of those losses came to Seton Hall in the title game of the 2003 Navy Classic. Home Openers Navy s loss to Marshall Sunday snapped a fiveyear winning streak for Navy in its home opener. The setback was also just the sixth in Navy s 30 home opening games. Shooting Woes Overall, Navy is shooting a respectable 35.3 percent in two-point field goal attempts this year, but the Mids have misfired on 27 of their 31 three-point field goal attempts for a mark of just 12.9 percent from behind the arc. The Mids set a school and Patriot League record last year by making an average of 6.32 three-point field goals a game. Navy s three-point percentage of 37.0 percent last year ranked third in school history. On the Boards The Mids are being outrebounded on the year, but much of that can be contributed to the 28- rebound deficit against Marshall. The Bobcats posted a four-rebound advantage over the Mids in the first game of the year. Turnovers Turnovers were a problem for Navy for much of the season, as the Mids committed 116 more turnovers than they forced last year. While Navy s turnover average of 18.0 this year is close to last year s mark of 18.5, the Mids have turned the ball over just one more time than their opponents have this season. Balanced Scoring Again Last year, Navy s leading scorer, Ashley Pelzek, averaged just 3.3 more points per game than Navy s No. 5 scorer last year did (Kate Hobbs). Offensive balance has been in place for the opening games of this year, as well, with leading scorers Lauren Nelson and Margaret Knap averaging 8.5 points a game and the No. 5 scorer, Carly Meyer, averaging 5.0 points a game. Scoring by Half Navy is being outscored by eight points a game during the first half this year and by 19 points a game during the second half Margaret Knap Margaret Knap tallied 12 points against Ohio to lead Navy in scoring for the second time in her brief career. The only Mid to reach double figures in points against the Bobcats, Knap converted 5-of-8 shots from the field, including a three-pointer, and 1-of-2 free throw attempts in the game. Kalen Kropa Kalen Kropa set a career high with three steals Friday against Ohio ( best was two in two games), then matched that high two days later against Marshall. She also added nine points against the Thundering Herd. Carly Meyer Carly Meyer rejected three shots during Navy s opening game against Ohio, the 12th time in her career she has tallied multiple blocked shots in a game. Hobbs & Meyer Kate Hobbs and Carly Meyer continue to move up Navy s all-time blocked shots list. Navy Career Blocked Shots Bryanna Herring, Kate Hobbs, 2004-pres Carly Meyer, 2004-pres. Lauren Nelson Lauren Nelson converted 4-of-9 shots from the field and 5-of-6 free throw attempts to produce a careerhigh 13-point effort Sunday against Marshall. The junior, who previously had a scoring best of nine points last year against UMBC, shared the scoring honors (with Kate Hobbs) for the first time in her career.

11 Game Notes Page 11 Three-Point Streak Navy enters the weekend having made at least one three-point field goal attempt in 253 consecutive games. Up Next Just one game is on the schedule over the next week for the Mids, a Nov. 25 contest at home against Mount St. Mary s. While the schedule may be sparse leading up to the game against the Mountaineers, it will be busy following it. That contest opens up a stretch of five games over a 14-day span.
