ACU entered the game ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II football by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and No. 16 by d2football.com, but the loss knocked them down to No. 24 in the AFCA poll and out of the d2football.com poll. Last year s team reached the D-II playoffs thanks to a disciplined approach that resulted in an average of 6.8 penalties per game and only nine turnovers all season. Saturday night, however, the Wildcats committed 10 penalties, turned the ball over three times and had a punt blocked. The Wildcats led 10-0 in the second quarter on a 68-yard touchdown pass from Billy Malone to Jerale Badon and a 20-yard field goal and were driving for more when the wheels fell off. Malone was intercepted at the Broncho 30-yard line by Brandon Smith, who returned the pick 42 yards to the ACU 28-yard line. UCO scored three plays later, and scored again on its next possession, turning a 10-0 deficit into a lead. The Bronchos, in fact, outscored ACU 27-0 after falling behind 10-0 to grab a lead early in the fourth quarter. The loss continued a disturbing trend for the Wildcats, who have now lost four of their last five games after last season s 7-0 start. In those four losses, the Wildcats have lost by one point, 16 points, three points and 10 points. The four losses in five games is the Wildcats worst skid since they lost four straight games (vs., at Southeastern Oklahoma State, at and vs. ) in head coach Chris Thomsen s first season of A LOOK AT THE BOBCATS WILDCATS LAST FIVE GAMES Date Opponent Result Oct. 28, 2006 L, Nov. 4, 2006 A&M-Kingsville W, Nov. 11, 2006 L, Nov. 18, 2006 L, Sept. 1, 2007 Central Oklahoma L, Head coach Brad Wright s debut was an unqualified success last Saturday as the Bobcats knocked off the No. 15 team in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as NCAA Division I-AA). The Bobcats racked up 510 yards of total offense in a win over the Cal Poly Mustangs. Junior running back Stan Zwinggi ran for 159 yards on 16 carries to pace a running game that racked up 351 yards against the Mustangs. Zwinggi on Monday was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance, which included a 92-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that is the longest play from scrimmage in school history. was a charter member of the Lone Star Conference when the league was formed April 25, Wright left the league after the 1983 season to join the Gulf Star Conference, and then later joined the Southland Conference.

Manning will also see some time as a kick-return specialist, and he s already made an impression during the pre-season. In the Bears last two pre-season games (wins over Indianapolis and San Francisco), Manning has averaged 20.0 yards per return on four kickoff returns. In three pre-season games, Manning has six tackles (three solo) and one forced fumble.

4 SCOUTING THE WILDCATS OFFENSE The Wildcats posted their lowest point total (17 points) since Oct. 30, 2004, when they beat, That 17-point effort came on the heels of a loss to Texas A&M-Commerce on Oct 23, ACU s offensive output of just 17 points marked only the eighth time in their last 31 games dating back to the 2004 season.... Quarterback Billy Malone completed just 50 percent of his passes (17 of 34 with one interception), just the fifth time in 21 career games that Malone has complete 50 percent or less of his passes in a game.... The last time he didn t throw a touchdown pass in a game was Oct. 22, 2005, at when he played sparingly before leaving the game with an injury. Malone, in fact, has thrown a touchdown pass in 19 of the 21 games he has played at ACU.... His 43 touchdowns passes are tied for fifth on the ACU all-time list with Clint Longley ( ), who led ACU to the 1973 NAIA Division I national title.... Senior wide receiver Jerale Badon had a record-setting night against the Bronchos as he hauled in seven receptions for 130 yards and one score, a 68-yarder in the second quarter that gave ACU a 7-0 lead.... Badon is now the Wildcats' all-time leader in receptions with 169, passing Arthur Culpepper (166 catches from ) on the list.... Badon is now just 123 yards away from passing the late Johnny Perkins as the all-time leader in receiving yards. Perkins had 2,529 receiving yards during his all-america career, and Badon enters next week's game with 2,407 career yards, 123 away from becoming the school's all-time leader.... Blinn College transfer Bernard Scott made his debut in the ACU backfield last Saturday, and it was a successful as he led all rushers with 120 yards on just 13 carries.... Scott, who earned the starting nod over returning starter Taber Minner after a strong performance in summer two-a-days had runs of 41 and 39 yards in the game.... Last season at Blinn, Scott ran for almost 1,900 yards to lead the nation in rushing and help Blinn to a 12-0 record and a national championship.... Another highly touted ACU transfer who made his Wildcat debut was wide receiver Johnny Knox (Tyler College), who caught seven passes for 93 yards and one touchdown.... Knox who was a first team junior college all-america last year started the game opposite Jerale Badon in the Wildcats offense. BILLY MALONE GAME-BY-GAME ACU junior quarterback Billy Malone has a chance to shatter almost every passing record in Wildcat football history by the time he finishes his career in fall After just two seasons, Malone ranks in the top 10 in several career categories, including yards, attempts, completions and touchdowns. Stutts entered the UCO game 14th on the ACU career tackles list with 220. He left the game with 233 career tackles and 11th on the list, just nine tackles away from overtaking Mike Funderburg (241 tackles from ) for 10th on the all-time list.... Senior CB Corey Jordan saw his first action since the game at the end of the 2006 regular-season, and he had a solid game, finishing with four tackles (two solo) and one PBU.... Jordan kept the Wildcats in the game at halftime when he knocked away a third-down pass into the end zone that was intended for Rick Montgomery. If the ball had been caught the Bronchos would have taken a lead into halftime. Instead, Jordan s play forced them to settle for a field goal, keeping ACU s comeback hopes alive.... Redshirt freshman defensive Bryson Lewis got the start in place of Ted DeVries, who is out for the season with a back injury. Lewis, though, played well as he finished with eight tackles (three solo), including two tackles for loss (minus-9 yards in losses).... True freshman defensive end Fred Thompson also got into the game and finished with two tackles. SPECIAL TEAMS The Wildcats were soundly beaten in the special teams area by the Bronchos, who blocked a punt, had a 28-yard kickoff return and saw the Wildcats average just 30.3 yards per punt, including just 34.1 yards per punt by Mark Kelley, who was playing in his first game.... Junior placekicker Matt Adams made both of his PATs in the game, running his career mark to 55 of Adams career PAT percentage of.965 is the best in school history, just ahead of the.956 posted by all-america placekicker Dennis Brown ( , 1990), who hit 65 of 68 PATs. 6 CHRIS THOMSEN HEAD COACH THIRD YEAR When ACU director of athletics Jared Mosley began looking for a new head football coach after the 2004 season, he knew exactly what the program needed. The Wildcats needed to find someone with a link to ACU, someone who could bring a unique offensive vision and be a great recruiter. He found all three in Chris Thomsen, a former ACU all-america at tight end and Wildcat assistant coach, who was hired Jan. 24, 2005, as the 18th head coach in Wildcat football history. Last season in his second year as the head coach, Thomsen led the Wildcats to their greatest season in almost 30 years and the program s first NCAA Division II playoff berth. ACU finished 8-3 with its season coming to a crushing end in a overtime loss at. Among the highlights for the Wildcats during the season were the program s first 7-0 start since the 1950 team finished 11-0, and a road win over on Oct. 19 in a game that was televised nationally by CSTV. Thomsen was named the Lone Star Conference South Division Coach of the Year, and was honored as the NCAA Division II Region IV Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. The Wildcats placed 11 players on the all-lsc South Division first team and had 19 players overall honored by the LSC. Before re-joining the ACU coaching staff, Thomsen, 38, has been an assistant at the University of Central Arkansas the previous two seasons where he served as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for the Bears. UCA finished 8-3 last season in the tough Gulf South Conference, which produced NCAA Division II national champion Valdosta State (Ga.). Thomsen was a second team all-america selection at tight end for ACU in 1993 and was named to the school s all-decade team for the 1990s. He earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Texas Christian in December 1993 and received his master s in secondary education from ACU in He was on the Wildcat football staff from Thomsen played for former ACU head coach Dr. Bob Strader in 1993 and coached under both Strader and Jack Kiser. During his seven seasons at ACU, the Wildcats were with three winning seasons. Thomsen, who played high school football in Vernon, was a second team all-america as a senior at ACU in 1993 after leading Lone Star Conference tight ends in receiving with 34 catches for 426 yards and eight touchdowns. He helped the Wildcats finish 7-3 in 1993 on his way to earning first team all-lsc honors. Prior to transferring to ACU, Thomsen played football three seasons ( ) and baseball one season (all-america and all-southwest Conference with 21 home runs and a.373 batting average) at TCU before playing minor league baseball for two seasons for the Oakland Athletics. After his playing career was finished at ACU, Thomsen joined the coaching staff, first as a graduate assistant and then working his way up to offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator, offensive coordinator, and, finally, assistant head coach. In 1998, the Wildcats finished 18th in the nation in passing under the direction of Thomsen, who was the offensive coordinator. He left ACU after the 1999 season to go into private business, but got back into coaching in 2001 in Wichita Falls where he served as the offensive coordinator at Wichita Falls High School for two seasons. The Coyotes won back-to-back district titles and led the district in scoring both seasons (34 points per game in 2001 and 42 in 2002). The Coyotes, in fact, set the school s single-season record for most points in a season in 2002, and the quarterback set the school s single-season record for touchdown passes. Thomsen moved on to Central Arkansas in 2003 where he served as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. In 2003 he coached an offensive line that opened the holes for the leading rusher in the Gulf South Conference. In 2004 the Bears were an offensive juggernaut, ranking in the top 10 in NCAA Division II football in points per game (38.1) and yards per game (477.7).
