GENERAL INFORMATION WWU ATHLETICS Western athletic history dates back over a century. Intercollegiate competition began in football and basketball in Today, the Vikings compete in 17 varsity sports, with nearly 500 athletes representing the school each year. Having completed six years as a full member of NCAA Division II, Western already has made national appearances in men s and women s basketball, men s cross country, women s crew, football, men s and women s golf, softball and volleyball; placing second in women s crew in 2002 and 2003, and reaching the semifinals in both men s basketball (2001) and women s basketball (2000). Last spring, the Vikings placed third nationally in women s crew, fifth in women s golf and ninth in men s golf. They have won the first three Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Sports Championships ( , , ). Western has developed an outstanding tradition in a number of sports and won the 1998 NAIA National Championship in softball in just the sixth year of the program. In women s basketball, Western ranks among the top 15 in all-time victories among all four-year schools, and has participated in 14 national tournaments - three in the AIAW, five in the NAIA and six in NCAA II working on a string of seven straight. In men s golf, the Vikings have won 43 district and conference championships, tying for fourth at the NAIA National Tournament in Western reached the NAIA Division II Championship Game in football in 1996 and has won league titles four of the last five years. The Vikings placed third in the 1990 NAIA Volleyball Championships and have gone to the NCAA II nationals each of the last three seasons. Western has had a number of individual champions in track and field, and the rowing program has long been recognized as perhaps the top non-ncaa I program on the West Coast. The Vikings had one of the longest winning streaks nationally when it won 38 straight women s soccer games from 1982 to They won 57 consecutive league matches in volleyball, from 2001 to 2004, the fourth longest streak in NCAA II history. FACILITIES Athletic facilities on Western s campus include Sam Carver Gymnasium, a softball field, artificial-surfaced Viking Field, a six-lane all-weather rubberized track, and four practice fields. Carver Gym, completed in 1962, has five basketball courts, including a main gym which seats 2,534 spectators. It also has a swimming pool, handball courts, a strength and fitness center, and convertible facilities for volleyball, which includes a SportCourt. Football and men s and women s soccer games are held at Bellingham s Civic Stadium, as are major track meets. The stadium, built in 1961, with an addition in 1971, has covered seating for 4,400 spectators and lights for night use. A FieldTurf surface was installed in The track is an eight-lane, 400-meter oval. Softball contests take place on campus at a facility completed in There is seating for 500. Crew events are held on Lake Whatcom, with the boathouse located at Lakewood. Cross country competition is conducted at Lake Padden Park. Golf matches are held at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. 6 HEAD COACH BRAD JACKSON By Jim Carberry JACKSON REACHES CAREER COACHING MILESTONE Western coach still enjoying job after 20 years There s a tinge of gray at the temples and instead of being able to beat all of the high school players sitting in the bleachers one-on-one as he could have two decades ago, 52-year-old Brad Jackson now can only beat, well, probably about 95 percent of them. But when Jackson speaks at his Western summer basketball camp, his voice has the same passion - and demands the same rapt attention from the prep players - as it did when he first started at Western 20 years ago. Twenty years, said Jackson, who is now the longest tenured hoop coach in school history. It seems like it s gone by in an instant. Twenty years as Western men s basketball coach. That is one more year as Vikings coach than Sam Carver, who they named the Western gym after, and two more than Chuck Randall, whose 275 victories, and 1972 national quarterfinalist squad were the standard until Jackson came along. Jackson even has one more year than Lynda Goodrich, Western s legendary women s basketball coach who is not only in the NAIA Hall of Fame but now is Western s athletic director and Jackson s boss. Twenty years is a milestone, said Goodrich. You don t even think about coaches staying that long (when they are first hired). You hope they stick around, and sometimes that isn t what they do. But Brad is the right person for the job; Western and he fit together well. Jackson s longevity might be worth noting in any occupation, but in the cutthroat, what-have-you-done-for-me-today world of college basketball, a 20-year stay is worth headlines. It s a tough profession, Jackson admitted. Coaches are evaluated and graded every night. That s why a lot of coaches focus on winning. But I really believe winning is a byproduct of little things you do. We want to win, but to me it s the process - what you do to put yourself in a position to win. My parents taught me to do my best and if somebody is better, then they are better. But you can do a lot to make sure you do your best. While winning may not be the focus of Jackson s program, it certainly has been a frequent byproduct. In his 19 seasons, Western is , an average of 18.6 victories a season. His winning percentage of.627 is better than any of the nine other men who coached the Vikings for 20 or more games. Perhaps more impressive has been the level at which the winning has been accomplished. Fourteen of his teams qualified for the playoffs and three reached the national tournament, one more than all 11 of Western s other coaches combined. When Western was still in the NAIA, Jackson led the Vikings to national tournament appearances in 1988 and 1994, but his best season was also the school s best: In just the school s third year as a member of NCAA Division II, the Vikings finished 27-4 and reached the national semifinals. While his trophy case includes coach of the year honors from the NCAA II West Region, Northwest Small College and Pacific West Conference as well as NAIA District 1 (three times), Little All-Northwest (twice) and NAIA Pacific Northwest Region I (once), he would much rather talk about his players than his awards. Looking back, the most rewarding thing has been the opportunity to work with a lot of great kids, he said. The special relationships that develop between coach and player - I take that really seriously. We (coaches) see them more than anyone else on campus. Jackson also is quick to share the spotlight for the Vikings success. I m the head coach, and I understand my role, said Jackson. But it s also been my goal to look at what we do in a team aspect. And we have a great team of coaches, trainers and managers. I really value what they have to say, and I want them to have a sense of ownership. As impressive as Jackson s longevity has been, equally incredible is the tenure of his assistant coaches, Tony Dominguez and Rob Visser. Both have been with Jackson for 10 seasons. It s zipped by, said Dominguez. 8

Yet if anyone knows the difficulty of balancing success on the court with honesty off the court, it is Dominguez, who coordinates recruiting and must try to sell the program and its coach to potential players and their families. It s incredibly tough to build and maintain programs with integrity and honor; it s almost impossible, said Dominguez. And Coach Jackson has done that. He maintains excellence on the court and in the program. When he sits down with a family, he tells them what s best for their son. Seventy-five percent of the coaches don t do that. Coach is about as good a coach as there is - he could coach in the Pac-10 any time. Jackson s integrity and caring attitude for his players is obvious to his peers. Brad is one of the most outstanding people you can meet, said Western women s coach Carmen Dolfo, who is in the 14th season of her own outstanding career. He has not only a passion for basketball, but he has a passion for his players. Western is lucky to have him. In hindsight, it s hard to imagine a better coach for the job than Jackson, who was hired in 1985 after coaching Bellevue s Eastside Catholic to its first ever Class AAA state playoff berth. Before that he also coached four years at Olympia High, directing the Bears to three Class AA state tournament appearances, and was an assistant coach for five years at Seattle Pacific University. But Jackson actually applied for the Western job three years earlier when Bill Westphal was hired and didn t even get an interview. I always thought the potential (for a successful program) was here, said Jackson. But I didn t realize the situation here. We had to start from scratch. While Western men s basketball had a run of success under Randall in the 1970s, the 1980s started as a disaster. The six seasons prior to Jackson s arrival, the Vikings had four losing seasons, three different coaches and only one playoff appearance. Worse yet was the program s significance - or lack thereof - both on campus and in the community. Fortunately, Jackson s arrival coincided with a shift in the administration s thinking when it came to the importance of athletics. Instead of trying to get by with the minimum, including no scholarships, no paid assistant coaches, outdated weight training facilities and almost no money for promotions, Western slowly began to build an athletic program that now ranks among the best small colleges in the nation. Shortly after Jackson arrived Goodrich was hired as athletic director, Rob Smith was named football coach and Dolfo took over for Goodrich as women s basketball coach. He and I shared a vision, said Goodrich of Jackson. We ve done it together, along with Rob and Paul (Madison, Western s sports information director) and Carmen. It s been a team effort. Jackson did his part off the court, helping with major fund-raisers such as Viking Night and the annual golf tournament, and going to residence halls to rally students to attend games and going to businesses to rally community leaders to support Western. Once we got the ball rolling, it had a snowball affect, said Jackson. Once we started getting businesses involved and people knew they could help kids, it was an easy sell. But just as significantly, he did his part in the gym. He began to change the perception of Western among high school coaches by starting a camp, which has grown into one of the most influential in the state. He also employed a fastbreak style that attracted more talented players. And once he had some scholarship money to even the recruiting playing field against other Northwest schools, the wins started to come. After going his first season, the Vikings ran off four straight 20- win seasons. Looking back, the coach sees the program s turning point coming in his second season, when Western reached the district playoffs, knocking off a powerful Simon Fraser squad on the road, thanks to Marcus Buren s six points in the final 30 seconds. It was like they had arrived, said Jackson. Our first game, there were probably 50 people in the stands, and I asked a player, Where is everybody? Jackson remembered not-to-fondly. And he said, That s all that come. That mentality toward athletics in general and basketball in particular was that it wasn t important. We had to create a culture. 9

The Vikings went on to lose a three-game series to Central that season, but did beat the mighty Wildcats at Carver Gym. That set the stage for the 1988 season, when James Johnson, Tim Dickerson and company led Western to the NAIA national tournament for the first time in 16 years. That got us going, said Jackson. Bit by bit we ve improved. We ve created a culture that athletics is a window to the institution. Now we graduate our students at a greater rate than the university, and we have really good teams. We ve come a long, long ways in 15 years. But Jackson s not done yet. The trip to the 2001 Final Four whetted Jackson s appetite for another national championship run. Then there s always the dream of games being broadcast on TV or the Internet, as well as improving Western s athletic facilities. We still have a lot to accomplish, he said. We improved our ability to do things, but we haven t reached our potential. We re still looking to the future. Does that mean that Jackson wants to stick around - maybe for another 20 years? With his son, Kyle, a junior on a team with playoff hopes, Jackson isn t making too many plans to move in the next two years. And while he won t be ignoring any offers - particularly Division I offers - after that, don t count on him leaving Bellingham, too soon. When we first came here, I told Deb we d be here three years, said Jackson of a conversation with his wife, Debbie. People told us it s hard to leave Bellingham, but we didn t grasp that. But we found a great church, it s a great place to raise kids, and I still get excited to come to work. I think I have one of the best jobs there is. 10

COACHING STAFF BRAD JACKSON Head Coach He s already the winningest men s basketball coach in school history with 353 victories. But as he enters his 20th season of coaching, Brad Jackson also becomes the longest-tenured hoop mentor at Western. Western has made five national tournament appearances in its history, Jackson has been the coach for three, including the epic run to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II National Tournament in Western also reached the NAIA National Tournament under Jackson s leadership in 1988 and The Vikings have had nine 20-win seasons, Jackson has been at the helm for seven, including a school-record four straight in the mid-to-late 1980s as well as two of the last three seasons. Jackson earned Region, Little All-Northwest and Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year honors in He was NAIA District 1 Coach of the Year in 1988, 1989 and 1990, as well as being Little All-Northwest Coach of the Year in 1988 and NAIA Pacific Northwest Region I Coach of the Year in Jackson also was an assistant coach for the West at the 1992 U.S. Olympic Sports Festival. Jackson also directs the highly successful WWU Basketball Camp. Begun in 1986, the camp has grown to be one of the largest in the northwest with alumni dotting the rosters of numerous colleges and universities as well as professional teams. Jackson came to Western in 1985 after five successful seasons as a high school coach - four at Olympia and one at Eastside Catholic - in which he led his teams to four state playoff appearances. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific for five seasons. A graduate of Washington State, he was a three-year letter winner in basketball, serving as team captain and leading the Pac-8 in assists (5.7 avg.) as a senior in He also played baseball for the Cougars as an outfielder for two seasons. In high school, Jackson lettered three years each in baseball, basketball and football at Hudson s Bay High School in Vancouver, Wash. He averaged 23.0 points a game as a senior in basketball, earning all-america and all-state honors. The 52-year old Jackson earned a bachelor s degree from Washington State in 1975 and a master s degree in athletic administration from Seattle Pacific in He and wife Debbie (formerly Halle), a four-time NCAA All-America gymnast at Seattle Pacific and a member of that school s Athletic Hall of Fame, have two children, daughter Lynsey, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina, and son Kyle, a member of the men s basketball team at Western. 11 PREVIEW EXPERIENCED VIKINGS SEEK ELUSIVE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT BERTH By Butch Kamena Experience could be the difference for the Western men s basketball team in The Vikings were overall last season and placed third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 11-7, narrowly missing the West Regional of the NCAA Division II National Tournament despite a starting lineup that often included two or even three sophomores and freshmen. Now, with three double-figure scorers returning among seven letter winners and a couple of transfers providing needed front line strength, Western looks ready to grab the postseason berth that has eluded it the last three years after reaching the national semifinals in When you look at the players we have returning, all of them have seen extensive time, said Western coach Brad Jackson (20th year, ), the winningest coach in school history in terms of victories and winning percentage (.617). They ve been down the road, and know what it is like to play in the conference. We were just two or three games away from an exceptional year last season and I like our chances with the experience we have now. Each of the last three years, the Vikings have entered the final week of the season with a shot at a regional berth. Eight teams get spots, with the GNAC regular-season champion receiving an automatic berth. Three starters return from last year, including the two leading scorers - junior forward Grant Dykstra, who was a second-team all-gnac pick, and junior guard Ryan Diggs, who received honorable mention all-league status. Both averaged 15.4 points a game. Dykstra, who has 730 career points, also led Western in rebounds (5.9) and steals (2.0), shot 42.1 percent (56-of-133) on 3-pointers and 79.7 percent (59-of-74) on free throws. Through two seasons, he is on pace to finish among the school s top 10 career leaders in four statistical categories, a distinction currently held by just two other players. Grant has had an exceptional first two years, Jackson said. He plays with great confidence, he hits big shots, and he s a very good one-onone defender. He s an outstanding all-around player and he thrives on competition. Diggs, who has 688 career points, also contributed 4.0 assists and 3.3 rebounds. Ryan is a great athlete and is becoming a great basketball player, said Jackson. As a junior, I think he ll play with more consistency, more calmness and more confidence. The other returning starter is senior forward Craig Roosendaal, who averaged 13.2 points and 3.4 rebounds, shooting a school single-season record 47.5 percent (77-of-162) on 3-pointers, which ranked 15th nationally in NCAA II Vikings (L-R):Front Row: Preston Vermeulen, Ira Graham, Ryan Diggs, Ken Nwaelele, Kyle Jackson, Brett Weisner Back Row: Grant Dykstra, Craig Roosendaal, Lukas Henne, Tyler MacMullen, Rob Primozich, Tyler Amaya, Darrell Visser, Calin Schell 13

Not only does he provide an outside threat, at 6-7, he s big enough to bang inside if needed. With the strength we ve added inside, it frees him up more to do the things he does really well, Jackson said of Roosendaal. And the primary thing is that he can really shoot it. The neat thing about Craig is if he misses a shot or two, it doesn t affect his confidence, and he gets on such good rolls, that he s a really dangerous player. Also back on the perimeter is junior guard Kyle Jackson, the son of the head coach, who averaged 6.3 points and 2.1 assists last year and made three starts. Kyle is a floor leader, he has an exceptional ability to understand what s going on, said Brad Jackson. He has a settling influence on other players and he has an ability to make others better. He s also become much stronger physically. The Vikings were often undermanned in the post a year ago, but two transfers - junior forward Tyler Amaya and junior center Tyler MacMullen - should give Western a much stronger inside presence this season. Amaya, a versatile athlete who can play in the post or on the perimeter, averaged 10.0 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds at Dixie JC in Utah after playing 24 games for NCAA I Gonzaga University in He was the MVP of the Class 3A State Tournament for Mount Vernon High School in 2001, helping the Bulldogs to the state championship. I ve known Tyler since he was in our camps in junior high, said Jackson. He s going to bring a dimension that will be a lot of fun for people to watch. Offensively, he gets to the basket, he can put it on the floor and he s a very good rebounder. He s hard to guard, he has good size and range. MacMullen, who didn t start playing organized basketball until two years ago, averaged 15.0 points and 10.2 rebounds for Edmonds CC last year to earn first-team all-nwaacc North Division honors. He makes an effort on every play, Jackson said of MacMullen. With his size and quickness, he s relentless on the boards. He s still just scratching the surface of his ability, but he has a good understanding of the areas he needs to develop. Two newcomers in the backcourt are freshmen Ira Graham and Ken Nwaelele. Graham averaged 25.6 points, 6.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds, earning second-team all-cif Division I-AA honors at Fontana (Calif.) High School. Nwaelele averaged 16.7 points as a prep senior, shooting 41 percent on 3-pointers. The remaining freshman is forward Calin Schell, who averaged 17.0 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.7 blocks for Chelan High. Ira Graham gives us the combo guard we were looking for, Jackson said. He can handle the ball and run the point, but he can also really score. He has the ability to come in and score right away. Completing the roster is junior center Rob Primozich, who redshirted last season. The Vikings averaged 88.1 points a game last year, ranking ninth nationally in NCAA II. They also shot 41.3 percent on 3-pointers (241-of- 584), being 12th nationally in 3-point percentage and 21st in 3-pointers made per game (8.9) With additional experience and a reinforced front line, Western figures to be in the thick of what should be a highly competitive GNAC race. To pick a favorite this year is almost impossible, Jackson said. This is a conference that has sent a team to the Final Four three of the last five years. You have to think it s one of the top three or four conferences in the country. We re pretty strong in every spot. We have good shooting, a good inside game, and we should be able to get up and down the floor well. As always, you hope that players blend together well and learn to play off each other. Listen To WWU Basketball All Season On 930AM Returning in the post spots are sophomore center Lukas Henne and forward Darrell Visser. Henne, who made three starts and played in every game as a true freshman, averaged 5.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and a team-high 1.0 blocks. Visser saw action in 22 contests, including one start, averaging 1.5 points and 1.1 rebounds. Lukas blossomed as his freshman year went on and he showed what he s capable of, Jackson said. The key for him is his ability to play at that level on a consistent basis. With Darrell, a lot of times, guys hit their junior year and their confidence kicks in and they take a jump. He has the ability to be an extremely good rebounder, and he runs the floor well. I would love to see both those guys take another step this year. Also back is junior guard Preston Vermuelen. He averaged 1.8 points, scoring 29 points in just 39 minutes of action. Preston has made great strides and after two years of limited playing time, he ll be pushing guys every day, said Jackson. He s extremely valuable, he s fearless, and the other guys respect and respond to him. Four freshmen have joined the Vikings. One of those is a transfer, as forward Brett Weisner redshirted at Eastern Washington University last year. Brett s a freshman, but an older one, said Jackson. He s a 6-5 shooter, he can run the floor, and he works extremely hard. Go Vikings! 14
