4 When talking about the Western Washington University Men s Basketball team, fourth-year head coach Tony Dominguez has little trouble describing the brand of basketball you ll see on the court this season. Competitive Determined Intense Teamwork Dominguez and the Vikings are the preseason pick to win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and feature a pair of preseason all-conference selections in junior forward Jeffrey Parker and senior point guard Ricardo Maxwell. Beyond the preseason accolades and the constant target as a team to beat, Dominguez is looking at as another opportunity to continue the strong tradition of the program that is a constant contender for the NCAA Division II Tournament and the national title. We are a team that has a lot of depth and a lot of talent, and our job is going to be to find a way to find the best balance that pushes this team forward, said Dominguez. We have some challenges this season without being able to play on campus, but we are looking forward to facing that adversity head on and becoming a better program because of it. The Vikings will be playing off campus at Whatcom Community College for the next two seasons as historic Carver Gym undergoes a state-of-the-art renovation. With every obstacle becomes the chance for greatness. I keep telling our guys to look at the positives and fight through it. No matter where you play, you have to bring the same intensity and same determination in order to win games. We are a team that won t have any excuses, added Dominguez. The Vikings return four starters and nine letter winners from last year s team that finished and 11-7 in GNAC play (5 th place). The squad features a rather large roster with 18 players, but that is by design. We have seven seniors right now, and wanted to bring in some younger players so we are not faced with a situation down the road where we are really young, said Dominguez. Our guys are fighting for playing time and that creates good competition. Like any sport at any level, you can never have too much good depth. When you have the amount of depth the Vikings have, figuring out where all the pieces fit is going to be the biggest challenge. The early part of the season will be important as we start defining roles and figuring out what pieces work best together on the court, said Dominguez. Dominguez talked at length about the upcoming season hitting on several topics: The Schedule: We loaded up on a lot of quality Division II schools to build our strength of schedule. We also play a lot of road games due to our gym scenario. That will hopefully make us a battle-tested team and put is in good contention to be a tournament team. We have a tough start to our season, but that should benefit us in the long run, especially as we enter conference play. Keys To Success for : We are a possession-minded team. Taking things one play, one game at a time. Defense is what defines our program s philosophy. If we can put pressure on teams with our defense and rebounding, we ll have some success. It starts and ends with defense and rebounding. I don t think we ll have any issues scoring, but we need to take our defense to the next level. The Conference: Our conference has a lot of talent, with several new coaches that have been successful on the recruiting trail. I think it is wide open in terms of contending for the conference title, but we are always a team that is a top target, and we embrace that challenge. We look at it as one game, one challenge at a time. After every game we need to refocus and prepare because every game counts. We are a team that will look at each game as a great opportunity to take our program to the next level. The Scorer Jeffrey Parker: Jeffrey is a scorer and a pure shooter, no doubt about it. He is a very talented player that is going to be an integral part of this team. He is working hard at becoming a better defensive player and rebounder, and those two areas of his game have the ability to really take off. We are going to lean on him, no doubt. The Court General Ricardo Maxwell: He is our engine, our playmaker. He is an extreme athlete and his quickness makes him really tough to defend. We need him to lead our team and put the team on his shoulders. Team Versatility: We pride ourselves on having player that can fill a number or roles, not just being defined by the position next to their name. This goes along with our team depth. Versatile team talent is something we believe we are strong in this season. The Big Guy Mac Johnson: Mac Johnson is our big man, who emulates former Viking Chris Mitchell. He is a very good shooter and has the potential to be a double-double guy every game. The Bulldog Colby Mitchell: Colby didn t play last year as a redshirt and I think that really benefited him. He is a year older, he is hungry to get out on the court and he is just a bulldog. He is tough and will be a backbone to our team this season with his intensity and work ethic. Role Players: We have a number of players that will give us a lift in a number of roles. Kyle Impero will take on a big roll and has the ability to score in bunches. Harris Javier is a floor general and really a steady player that controls the tempo. Brett Kingma can really shoot the ball and will give us a lift. Brad Wallace is super tough and has good ability. Blake Bowen has worked on his agility and developed into a more all-around player. He can really shoot the ball. Trey Drechsel is a guy that can play 1-4 and can really shoot the ball.
