5 SEAWOLF COACHING STAFF Head Coach Rusty Osborne UAA/Career Record: , 8th year as head coach; 21st overall at UAA Education: B.S., Education, Univ. of Texas, 1988; M.A., Educational Administration, SW Texas State, 90 fter leading Alaska Anchorage to six straight winning seasons including A four NCAA Tournament appearances Rusty Osborne has clearly established himself among the top coaches in both Division II basketball and school history. Under Osborne s leadership, UAA has gone (.668) over the past six seasons, including victories over six Division I teams and 12 nationally ranked D-II teams. Last season Osborne piloted the Seawolves to a record, equaling the second-most victories in program history and trailing only his team s 29 wins. In fact, UAA is 5-2 in NCAA play in its last two appearances, with both losses coming to the eventual national runner-up. In , Osborne earned the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach-of-the-Year award as UAA posted the best record in school history (29-6), won its first GNAC title, and advanced to the Div. II Final Four for the first time in 20 years. The Seawolves produced a pair of All-Americans as they rose as high as No. 4 in the national polls and earned their first-ever No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed. In the four of the last five campaigns, Osborne s teams have finished in the top 10 of the NCAA Div. II national stats in both three-point and free-throw percentage. In , UAA was 2nd nationally from the charity stripe and 7th from long range. Osborne s squads have also gained a reputation for defense, leading the GNAC in points allowed the last five seasons. From , Osborne spent 13 seasons as an assistant with the Seawolves, including 11 years as Charlie Bruns' chief assistant. The Houston, Texas, native joined the UAA staff after serving under former Seawolf coach Harry Larrabee three seasons ( ) at Div. I Southwest Texas State. The Seawolves have won 64 percent of their games with Osborne on the staff, claiming four conference titles and eight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. As an assistant, he was responsible for the recruitment of five All- Americans, 12 All-West Region players, 28 all-conference performers and five league Players of the Year. In addition, 17 of his players have gone on to the professional ranks in the United States and abroad, including recent stars such as Peter Bullock, Kemmy Burgess and Luke Cooper. Since coming to UAA, he has been involved in organizing Seawolf Outreach games in Barrow, Kotzebue, Kenai and Fort Richardson. He is also the director of the Sullivan Arena Jumpshot Basketball Camp, and has put on many clinics in rural Alaska. Before making the move to the collegiate ranks, Osborne worked for one year at the prep level as an assistant coach at Hyde Park Baptist in Austin, Texas, helping the team to a 36-8 finish and a state title. Osborne prepped at Alief-Elsik High in Houston, where he was a twotime all-district selection and senior captain. Collegiately, he lettered his freshman season at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Texas, and redshirted at Eastern New Mexico. Assistant Coach Ryan Orton 3rd season at UAA Education: B.S., Health & Physical Education, Eastern Oregon, 1996 yan Orton returns to Alaska Anchorage for his third season as an assistant R coach on Rusty Osborne's men's basketball staff in A native of Creswell, Ore., Orton brings extensive experience at both the Division I and Division II levels, including two seasons at Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Northwest Nazarene. At UAA, Orton has made an immediate impact, helping secure commitments from five former Alaska Players-of-the-Year, plus All-America candidates Taylor Rohde and Mario Gill from the Lower 48. Before coming to UAA in 2009, Orton coached at D-I program Montana State from , where he was responsible for both recruiting and team academic development, while serving as position coach for post players. In his time with the Bobcats, the team had a 100 percent graduation rate, produced five Academic All-Big Sky honorees and earned the athletic department's Allison Award, given to the MSU team whose overall GPA improves most from one year to the next. At NNU from , Orton was involved in every facet of the program from on-court instruction and scouting to scheduling and fund-raising. He also proved one of the GNAC's top young recruiters, signing the league's 2007 Newcomer of the Year and the 2006 Idaho High School State Player of the Year. Orton also brings head-coaching experience to UAA, having directed the program at Lane (Ore.) Community College in At LCC, his team led the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges South Region in points per game and ranked third overall among 36 NWAACC schools. Orton got his start in college coaching at D-I Eastern Washington from , serving on the staff that produced the Big Sky Conference's best overall record over four seasons ( ). He earned a B.S. in health and physical education from Eastern Oregon in 1996 and is currently pursuing a master's in physical education from Eastern Washington. As a player at EOU he was the 1996 team MVP and captain, earning honorable mention All-Cascade Conference honors. He also played collegiately at Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Ore., from Grad. Assistant Coach Cameron Turner 1st season at UAA Education: B.S., Criminology, Southern Oregon, 2004 ameron Turner joins Rusty Osborne s staff in C as the Seawolves graduate assistant coach. The Lake Oswego, Ore., native comes north after a successful six-year run coaching the Willamette Reign AAU program in his home state. Additionally, he was the head track & field and cross country coach at Woodburn High School, where he directed the after-school programs. A 2004 graduate of Southern Oregon University, Turner is currently pursuing his masters degree in human services at UAA.
