DIVISION II MEDIA POLL Poll #14 (Feb. 27) FORT HAYS STATE NOTES Seven NCAA Tournament Appearances Under Johnson Fort Hays State has enjoyed seven NCAA Tournament appearances under Mark Johnson. Fort Hays State's last appearance in the NCAA Tournament was during the season, when it ell to Nebraska-Kearney in the opening round. The last conerence title or FHSU occurred in when the Tigers were MIAA Co-Regular Season Champions with Central Missouri. Nine 20-Win Seasons Under Johnson Fort Hays State has reached the 20-win mark in a season nine times under head coach Mark Johnson. Johnson, the all-time wins leader at FHSU, has the most 20-win seasons o any coach in FHSU history. Load o Juniors The junior class on this year's team makes up over hal o the roster. FHSU has just one senior, that being orward Hadley Gillum. The Tigers have our returning juniors, which includes starters rom last year Kyler Kinnamon and Trey O'Neil, and top scorer o the bench Brady Werth. The Tigers have three junior transers, all rom the junior college ranks. That group includes KeShawn Wilson, Marcus Cooper, and Calvin Harrington. Tigers Finish 4th in MIAA or Second Straight Year Fort Hays State i nished in a tie or 4th in the MIAA regular season standings last year with Missouri Southern, Washburn, and Central Oklahoma, all at FHSU was the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Tournament, won in the opening round, then ell to No. 4 seed Missouri Southern in the conerence tournament quarterinals. FHSU went 13-9 in MIAA play in when the conerence had a 22-game schedule. All-American Davis Exhausts Eligibility Rob Davis earned All-America Honorable Mention honors by Division II Bulletin as a senior in , becoming the 26th All-American in Fort Hays State Men's Basketball history. Davis was the seventh All-America selection in Fort Hays State's NCAA Division II history and the ourth under head coach Mark Johnson. Davis averaged 21.4 points per game, the eighth-highest single season scoring average in program history. Davis became the 19th player in program history to reach 1,000 points, doing so in just two years with FHSU ater playing two years at Pratt (Kan.) Community College. He i nished with 1,140 points over two years at FHSU, averaging 19.0 points per game. His career scoring average or FHSU ranks i th in program history. Guard Rob Davis scored at least 30 points 8 times. He has scored over 30 points in consecutive games twice this year. He scored in double i gures in 26 o 29 games. He scored at least 20 points in 17 contests. He had a career-high 42 points on February 1, 2017 at Emporia State, becoming the i rst Tiger in 22 years to reach the 40-point barrier. Davis tied the 6th-highest single-game scoring perormance in program history. In an exhibition at the University o Colorado (which served as a regular season game or Colorado), Davis set a new Coors Events Center record or points in any hal with 29 in the second hal. Dallas Baptist (Texas) Davis, Gillum, and Smith Earn All-MIAA Honors The Tigers had three players named to the All-MIAA Men's Basketball Team in Senior guard Rob Davis earned i rst team honors or the second straight year, while junior orward Hadley Gillum and senior orward JaQuan Smith each were named honorable mention. Smith was also one o i ve players in the conerence named to the MIAA All-Deensive Team. Four Newcomers Fort Hays State has our newcomers to the program this year in junior transers KeShawn Wilson, Marcus Cooper, and Calvin Harrington, along with true reshman Nyjee Wright. Wilson was a member o last year's NJCAA Division II championship team at Southwestern (Iowa) Community College, averaging 11.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game as a sophomore. He also averaged double i gures in scoring as a reshman at 12.3 points per game. Cooper was his team's leading scorer at Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College in , where he averaged 16.4 points per game. Harrington averaged 11.1 points per game at Northeast (Neb.) Community College last year. He played at NCAA Division II member Bemidji State as a reshman. Wright comes to FHSU as an all-state second team selection in Kansas Class 6A rom Derby High School. He averaged just north o 20 points per game as a reshman, while dishing out over our assists per game. Local Redshirts The two players that redshirted last year or FHSU are both rom Hays. Jared Vitztum, a 6-oot, 7-inch orward played at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School, while Isaiah Nunnery, a 6-oot, 3-inch guard, competed at Hays High School. Both were all-state selections as seniors in Vitztum looks to give FHSU added height on the interior, while Nunnery adds length to the perimeter.

5 FORT HAYS STATE NOTES (CONTINUED) Three Starters Return Fort Hays State returned three starters rom last year in Hadley Gillum, Trey O'Neil, and Kyler Kinnamon. The Kansas trio started all 29 games last year, accounting or 26.2 points per game. All three averaged over 26 minutes per game. Gillum is the top returning scorer and rebounder on the team ater averaging 13.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last year. Over two-thirds o O'Neil's i eld goals last year were 3-point i eld goals. Kinnamon is the top returning assister ater averaging 3.3 assists per game last year. Five Overtime Contests Fort Hays State has now played i ve overtime games this season ater the overtime contest against Missouri Southern in the MIAA Tournament Quarteri nals. The Tigers won 86-85, picking up their second overtime victory in a row ater losing the irst three attempts this season. All i ve o the overtime contests this year have been away rom Gross Memorial Coliseum, which includes three true road games and two neutral site contests. The overtime losses were to Sioux Falls (neutral), Colorado School o Mines, and Southwest Baptist, while the other win was a double overtime game at Northeastern State. Entering this year, Fort Hays State was 20-7 (.741) in overtime games under head coach Mark Johnson, but now sits at (.688). Sharing and Protecting the Rock Fort Hays State is averaging 14.9 assists per game. The team had a season-best 30 helpers in the win over Kansas Christian (11/21). Point guard Kyler Kinnamon is averaging 4.3 assists per game so ar. The Tigers rank 32nd nationally in assist/turnover ratio (+1.35) and 32nd in turnover margin (+2.7). 30-Point Scorers in the Post Fort Hays State orwards Hadley Gillum and Brady Werth each have 30-point scoring games this season. Gillum had a career-high 36 points in the double-overtime loss at Colorado School o Mines, but also scored 30 against Missouri Southern in Hays and 35 against Northeastern State in Tahlequah. Werth scored a career-high 30 in the overtime loss to Sioux Falls, but scored all 30 o his points in regulation. Fort Hays State did not have a 30-point game rom a orward since the season, when Dwayne Brunson reached the mark twice that season. Gillum Leading in Scoring and Rebounding Hadley Gillum leads the team in scoring at 17.0 points per game and rebounding at 6.8 per game. He ranks 7th in the MIAA in scoring and 9th in rebounding. Gillum has i ve double-doubles this season and has reached 30 points in a game three times this year. He has reached double i gures in scoring in 25 o 30 games. Gillum ranks 11th in the MIAA in ield goal percentage (.479) and 5th in ree-throw percentage (.868). Kinnamon Among Top Assisters in MIAA Junior point guard Kyler Kinnamon ranks 6th in the MIAA in assists, averaging 4.3 per game. C.J. Carr o Missouri Southern is the leader at 6.0 per game. Kinnamon dished out at least 3 assists in 26 o 30 games this year. Kinnamon has shown good deense as well, ranking 6th in the MIAA in steals per game (1.5). Solid at the Stripe Fort Hays State currently ranks 3rd in the MIAA in ree-throw percentage at 76.2 percent. That ranks 26th in NCAA Division II. National leader Shippensburg shoots 80.6 percent as a team. With the solid shooting percentage as a team at the line, the Tigers rank 43rd in the nation in made ree-throws (470). Second Hal Comebacks In nine o Fort Hays State's 19 wins this year, the Tigers overcame a second-hal dei cit. The largest margin erased by the Tigers in the second hal in a winning eort was 8, which they accomplished against both Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State in the regular season, and then against Missouri Southern in the MIAA Tournament Quarteri nals. Gillum Becomes 9th Tiger with 1,000 Points and 500 rebounds Fort Hays State senior orward Hadley Gillum became the 20th men's basketball player in program history to reach 1,000 points in a career at FHSU with his i rst basket at Nebraska-Kearney on February 20. Gillum now has 1,069 points in his career. He is now 17th on the all-time scoring list at FHSU. On Tuesday night (Feb. 27) in the opening round o the tournament against Lindenwood, Gillum reached 500 rebounds in his career with his 10th rebound o the game. He is just the 9th Tiger in history to accomplish both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in their career. The last to accomplish the eat was Corbin Kuntzsch in Two years in a row a Tiger player reached 1,000 points in their careers at FHSU, which includes Rob Davis last year. MIAA Tournament History Fort Hays State is overall in its history o playing in the MIAA Tournament. The Tigers went 1-1 in last year's tournament, moving on to the quarteri nals as the No. 5 seed. The Tigers have won two games so ar this year and ace Washburn in the semiinals. The Tigers are 0-2 against the Ichabods all-time in the tournament, which includes a loss in Kansas City in the semii nals in when Washburn was the No. 1 seed and FHSU was the No. 5. Johnson has led the Tigers to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in his time at FHSU. Johnson became the all-time wins leader in Fort Hays State history on January 11, 2014 in a victory at home over Lincoln University, recording his 258th win. Johnson is just one o three coaches in Fort Hays State's storied basketball history to record more than 200 wins. He reached his 300th career win on February 13, 2016 in a victory at Missouri Southern. He has coached our All-Americans, 49 all-conerence selections, a conerence player o the year, a conerence reshman o the year, and three conerence deensive players o the year in his time at FHSU. Johnson has guided Fort Hays State to nine 20-win seasons, the most o any coach in the program's history. The Tigers reached the NCAA Tournament or the seventh time in his tenure in , i nishing overall. In , Johnson guided the Tigers to a record o 22-8 overall and their sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in his tenure. The Tigers were ranked as high as No. 15 nationally in Fort Hays State i nished 20-8 in and claimed its i rst MIAA Regular Season Championship since joining the conerence in , tying Central Missouri or the conerence crown. In the Tigers i nished 19-9 and reached the Top 10 o the Division II national rankings or the third consecutive year with No. 8 as their highest ranking. The team set a new school record or most consecutive weeks in the national rankings, which ended at 36 consecutive weeks, dating back to the season. In , Johnson guided his team to the MIAA Tournament Championship and second consecutive second-place i nish in conerence regular season play with an overall mark o It was the i rst MIAA Championship in any sport or Fort Hays State University ater joining the conerence in The Tigers went on to make their second straight appearance in the NCAA Division II National Tournament and third in a run o our years. They advanced to the semii nals o the South Central Regional or the second consecutive year, making it the third time one o Johnson s teams made the regional semii nal. Fort Hays State was one o just eight teams in NCAA Division II to remain in every weekly top 25 regular season poll, reaching as high as No. 3 in the nation with a 13-1 start to the season. In , FHSU posted a record o 23-7 and recorded their best record in the MIAA to date with a mark o 16-4, good or second place. FHSU reached the semii nals o the NCAA Division II South Central Regional. With a 17-1 start to the season, the Tigers ascended all the way to No. 3 in the national rankings by mid-season. The Tigers entered the national rankings in early December and remained in the polls the remainder o the season. In , Fort Hays State i nished 20-9 overall and third in the MIAA standings, beginning a three-year run o at least 20 wins in a season. In , the Tigers made their third NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance under Johnson, i nishing overall. The best season or Fort Hays State under Johnson was in , its i nal season as a member o the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conerence. The team i nished 27-4 overall, won the regular season conerence title with an 18-1 record, and reached the NCAA Division II North Central Regional semii nals. The Tigers were ranked No. 1 in the nation or two weeks during Johnson was named RMAC Coach o the Year or the i rst time in his career. He also coached the RMAC Player o the Year, Tyrone Shephard. The i rst FHSU team Johnson guided to the NCAA Tournament was the squad. The Tigers posted a record o 23-8 that season, tying the third-most wins or any o Johnson s teams at FHSU. Johnson s teams have made conerence post-season tournament appearances in all 16 years he has led the Tigers, with i ve in the RMAC and 11 in the MIAA. Prior to being named the head coach, Johnson served as the Tigers assistant coach rom 1996 until the season. He served as the Tigers interim coach ollowing Gary Garner s departure to Southeast Missouri State University prior to the start o the season. Beore coming to FHSU, Johnson was the assistant coach at Phillips University, Enid, Okla. He coached the season at Labette Community College under Rand Chappell and then moved along with Chappell to Phillips University. Following his playing career at Pittsburg State University he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Pittsburg State. Following a senior season that garnered him All-America, All-State, All-Metro and All-Conerence honors at Omaha Millard South High School, he played basketball at Kilgore Junior College, Kilgore, Texas. His sophomore year he was selected to the Texas Eastern Athletic Conerence Academic Team. Ater Kilgore, Johnson played two years at Pittsburg State University where he earned Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association honors twice and All-South Region honors as a senior.
