W Last 10 Games HEADLINES PRESENTING THE PENGUINS Youngstown State took down second-place IUPUI on Thursday (Feb. 8) in Indianapolis for its fifth win in six games and its fourth-consecutive road victory. The Penguin victory saw 20 lead changes between the two teams, and allowed Youngstown to redeem itself from a loss to the Jags earlier in the season. Indiya Benjamin became the program s all-time assists leader, handing out 10 helpers while also tacking on 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half. LAST TIME OUT UIC took a loss to Cleveland State at home in the UIC Pavilion Thursday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Flames ended the game with a positive turnover differential (22-20), and were able to outscore the Vikings in the paint (24-20). UIC also notched 14 offensive rebounds to CSU s five, and was able to convert them into eight points, while the Vikings recorded just four second chance points. Taylor Toney was once again solid for the Flames, recording her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. Jada Nneji also matched her career-high in points (7) and was 5-for-9 from the charity stripe. Tia Tedford was back in the lineup for the first time since Jan. 13, and contributed a career-high four steals. RACKING UP SECOND CHANCES UIC is second in the Horizon League in offensive rebounds with 14.6 per game. Gabryelle Johnson leads the team with 75, and has nearly as many offensive rebounds as defensive (82). Four players (Johnson, Byrd, Toney, Lampley) have at least one game with five offensive rebounds, and the Flames have out-offensive rebounded their opponents in 19 of 23 games, including Thursday s game against Cleveland State. The team s 26 offensive boards and 25 second chance points against Indiana Northwest were both season highs. TURNING YOU OVER UIC has shown a commitment to disrupting opponents offensive rhythm, and reaped the benefits in the turnover category. The Flames are second in the Horizon League in turnovers forced. They have had a positive turnover differential in 11 of 23 games and have capitalized by going 6-5 in those contests. The team s brand of pressure defense shows up not only in steals, but in deflections and harassment of opposing ball handlers leading to bad passes and traveling violations. Flames opponents have committed more turnovers than assists in all but seven games so far. UIC is allowing 63.4 points per game overall this season, ranking sixth in the Horizon League, and opponents are shooting 41 percent from the floor. The Flames force the second-most turnovers (18.4 per game) in the Horizon League, which is also good for a top 75 ranking nationally. HITTING THEIR SHOTS UIC has shot 40% or better from the floor in seven games this season. The team is 5-2 in those games. The going has been tougher in games in which their shooting percentage dipped below 40%, as they are 2-14 in those contests. That is still two more wins than they got all of last season when making less than 40% of their field goals. The team is much more consistent inside the arc, having made at least 40% of their two-pointers in 14 contests, with a record of 7-7. UIC Numerical Roster # Name Ht. Pos. Yr. 3 UIC FLAMES BASKETBALL GAME NOTES GAME 24: UIC vs. Youngstown State - Feb. 10, :00 pm CT - UIC Pavilion - page 3 HISTORIC COMEBACKS The Flames comeback from 15 points down to Eastern Michigan was the second largest comeback in the Regina Miller era. It was the 11th time Miller led her troops to a win after facing a double digit deficit. The 11-point comeback against North Texas was the 12th such win. The Flames were down by 15 as late as the 3:18 mark of the third quarter against EMU, and faced their largest deficit as late as 3:24 in the third period against North Texas. ANATOMY OF A COMEBACK UIC has had several dramatic comebacks this season, two of which ended up in the win column. Its most recent come from behind win came against North Texas on Dec. 18, when the Flames over came an 11-point deficit to earn a win. The Flames also put up a season-high 31 points in the final quarter against Eastern Michigan (Dec. 8) for a win. Last month against Cleveland State (Jan. 6) and Oakland (Jan. 11), UIC has put up two of its highest point totals in a single quarter all season, and in both cases the Flames were down by a margin of 12 or more heading into the quarter. UIC put up 28 points in the third quarter against Oakland, and 25 points in the fourth quarter against Cleveland State to bring themselves back into contention in both games, but ultimately fell in both instances. Largest Comebacks (in a win, 2011-present) vs. Wright State 2/21/ vs. Eastern Michigan 12/8/ vs. St. Xavier 11/8/13 12 at Youngstown State 2/7/ six times, including 12/18/17 THREE-PER BY THE DOZEN UIC converted 12 three-point field goals against Eastern Michigan Dec. 8, and equaled that number against Evansville. That is a high in the six-plus seasons under Regina Miller. The wealth was spread out against EMU, as six players made at least one triple and nobody had more than three. Brittany Byrd did the heavy lifting against the Purple Aces, converting six of the team s triples. Highest Scoring Quarters ( to present) vs. Robert Morris (Chi.) 11/17/ vs. Eastern Michigan 12/8/ vs. Oakland 1/11/18 28 vs. Evansville 12/16/17 28 vs. Evansville 12/16/17 28 at Oakland 2/13/16 Most Three Pointers Made (single game, to present) vs. Eastern Michigan 12/8/17 12 vs. Evansville 12/16/ vs. SIUE 11/15/12 11 vs. Wright State 2/6/ twice RAREFIED AIR After alternating wins and losses throughout the first seven games of the season, UIC won back-to-back games for the first time all year, and the first time since Jan , 2016, with their wins over Indiana Northwest and Eastern Michigan. UIC then went on to take its next two games, Evansville (96-77) and North Texas (70-67) to extend the streak to four. By putting together four straight wins, they improved to four games over.500 for the first time since they were 9-5 in January TRIPLE DOUBLE Four players scored at least 10 points on Jan. 4 against Youngstown State, and three scored at least 10 points in the two games that followed, at Cleveland State (Jan. 6) and versus Oakland (Jan. 11). The Flames have had at least three players in double figures in nine games thus far. UIC is now 5-4 in those games (Jackson State - L; Indiana State - W; Indiana Northwest - W; Eastern Michigan - W; Evansville - W; North Texas - W; Youngstown State - L; Cleveland State - L; Oakland - L). THE DRIVE FOR FIVE The Flames recorded their longest home-court winning streak in a single season spanning Nov. 30-Dec. 18, but was snapped with a loss to IUPUI on Dec. 30. The run was UIC s longest since the team won eight straight from Nov. 14 through Jan. 2. PERFECT FROM THE LINE Taylor Toney was a perfect 12-for-12 at the free throw line against Fort Wayne Nov. 21, breaking the program record for most free throws in a game without a miss. The previous record was 10, set by Shamiea Green on Dec. 22, Toney made 17 straight foul shots overall until missing one against Bradley. She is the most efficient at the line, making 73 percent (70-of-96) of all freebies this season. TWIN TWENTIES Taylor Toney and Brittany Byrd each scored more than 20 points in two games this season (Fort Wayne and Evansville). Two Flames had not scored 20 or more points in the same game since Jan. 9, 2016 (Ruvanna Campbell - 29, Kendyl Nunn - 25). Both Byrd and Toney have racked up five 20-plus efforts this season, with Byrd also owning a 30 plus effort at Cleveland State on Jan. 6. This represents a shift from last season s showing, which included 13 different starting combinations. UIC s starters are getting the bulk of the minutes, too. Two of them (Byrd and Toney) are in the Horizon League s top ten in minutes played. Byrd leads the conference at 36.0 minutes per game. SHE GOES, WE GO Brittany Byrd set a career-high with 31 points at Cleveland State on Jan. 6. She made 13-of-18 shots and 5-of-9 three pointers. She is the team s leading scorer and ranks fifth in the Horizon League, averaging 14.9 points per game. The junior is also fifth in three-point field goals made, averaging 2.0 triples per game. Byrd has lead the team in scoring in thirteen games this season, the most of anyone on the roster. She had back-to-back 20 point outings two times thus far, and has five on the season. Byrd is the Flames leader in shot attempts and makes from the field overall and from three-point range. Given all those superlatives, it should be no surprise that her personal struggles have overlapped with those of the team. Byrd is shooting 43 percent in Flames wins, and 37 percent in losses. SCOUTING YOUGNSTOWN STATE Youngstown State has been hot on the road lately, taking four-straight road contests while also winning five of its last six overall. The Flames will have to be cautious of the Penguins going beyond the arc, as they lead the League in both three-point field goal percentage (.341) as well as three-point field goals made (8.5 per game average). The Penguins new all-time assists leader, Indiya Benjamin, also leads the conference in assists, averaging 5.2 helpers per game. Their two top shooters in Sarah Cash and Mary Dunn rank third and fourth, respectivley, in the League in field goal percentage. Cash is shooting.571 on the season while Dunn is.555 from the field. GABBY GOES DOUBLE-DOUBLE Gabryelle Johnson runner-up on the Flames with three double-doubles this season. She contributed on both ends of the floor against Jackson State, posting a career high 18 rebounds, 10 offensive, and tying her then-career mark with 13 points. It was her first double-double, and the most offensive boards by a Flame since Ruvanna Campbell snagged 10 on Feb. 20, Johnson set a new career high with 17 points against North Texas on Dec. 18 and added 12 boards for her second double-double, and recorded her third of the season at Cleveland State on Jan. 6 with 11 points and 10 rebounds. LIGHTING THE LAMP Tylah Lampley has cemented herself in the rotation as an important bench player, and has even appeared in the starting lineup on five occassions. She leads the team in minutes, points, and rebounds off the bench, and is the overall leader in blocked shots. Lampley s athleticism has impacted several games, including Jan. 11 against Oakland, where she posted 14 points and also posted seven rebounds and four blocked shots, both of which were career-highs. The sophomore ended the month of January recording career-highs in eight different categories, and is fourth in the League in blocks with a 1.0 per game average. RIGHT ON POINT Catera Etheridge has emerged as the Flames full-time starter at point guard this season. Though she did start 12 games last year, she averaged only 17.3 minutes. On the floor for 26.7 minutes per game this year, Etheridge has brought a steady hand to the ball handling responsibilities while also increasing her averages in points, assists, and steals from The junior guard posted a career-high 17 points on Dec. 30 against IUPUI in the Horizon League opener and matched her career-high assists (5) against Northern Kentucky and again in the rematch against IUPUI on Feb. 3. 5 UIC FLAMES BASKETBALL GAME NOTES GAME 24: UIC vs. Youngstown State - Feb. 10, :00 pm CT - UIC Pavilion - page 5 GETTING UP TO SPEED With six newcomers on the team, the rotation tightened up in the early stages of this season, but has recently experienced some wavering. The starters in the first 14 games (and three of the last four), all juniors and seniors, have accounted for 71 percent of the total minutes so far. Nonetheless, all six newcomers have seen game action. Freshmen Abreanna Lake, Tia Tedford, and Jada Nneji have been on the floor the most. They average 11.4, 13.1, and 8.6 minutes per game respectively. Tedford is the sole freshman to have earned a spot in the starting lineup after appearing in the starting five on Jan. 13 against Detroit Mercy. AFFECTING THE GAME Jada Nneji continues to build her skills, as she posted a season-high five rebounds against Oakland in 16 minutes of play. Nneji also had back-to-back quality appearances in which she has filled out the stat sheet. On the floor for 13 minutes against Bradley, Nneji had four points, four steals, and a block -- all season highs to that point. She also had three rebounds, one short of her previously set season best. She topped her season scoring high against Indiana Northwest with seven points, tied her then rebounding mark with four, and added an assist, a block, and a steal. The freshman also had a solid outing on Thursday versus Cleveland State, tying her career-high points (seven) while also providing three offensive boards. GETTING AN EARLY START The Flames no strangers to daytime (before 6:00 pm) tipoffs. They started the season with six out of seven day games, and only have one night game remaining on their schedule (Feb. 15 at Detroit). UIC will play 21 day games this season, and only 8 night games. The team is 4-13 in day games so far, exceeding last season s win total in day starts, and is 3-3 in night games. A CAREER NIGHT Teodora Zagorac set not one, but two career highs Nov. 30 against Indiana State. She hauled in 16 rebounds, easily eclipsing her previous high of 10. Fourteen of her caroms were on the defensive boards preventing the Sycamores from getting second chances. Zagorac also handed out six assists, mostly after drawing defenders under the basket and finding an open teammate. Her set-ups for easy shots helped the team shoot 41.5% for the game. The senior has also been the top rebounder in the last two games, including eight against Milaukee, recording an even four boards in both the offensive and defensive zones. HOOSIER HYSTERIA UIC will have plenty of exposure to Indiana schools this season. Five non-conference opponents (Bethel, Fort Wayne, Indiana State, Indiana Northwest, and Evansville) and Horizon League foe IUPUI hail from the Hoosier State. Saturday s tilt against IUPUI was UIC s final game against an Indiana opponent, leaving UIC with a 5-2 record against opponents from the Hoosier state this season. MAKING ACQUAINTANCES Five of the Flames 11 non-conference opponents are first-time foes in program history. All five meetings were at UIC Pavilion, including Bethel (W), Jackson State (L), Santa Clara (L), Indiana Northwest (W), and North Texas (W). HAILING FROM ALL OVER This year s freshman class, which hails from three states and Canada, brought increased geographical diversity to the roster. UIC s 14 players represent six states (Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan, Wyoming, and California) and two foreign countries (Serbia and Canada). Abreanna Lake (Elk Grove, Calif.) is the first Californian to suit up for the Flames since Jada Nneji (Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada) is the latest in a long line of international players to join the team, but the first Canadian to appear on the roster since NEWCOMER ON THE BENCH Kristen Morris joined the Flames coaching staff prior to this season. Morris was a four-year contributor at LSU, where she appeared in 108 games and three Final Fours. She was also a two-time Academic All-SEC selection. After graduating, she had a six year professional career overseas. She won two league championships and was the Eurobasket.com All-Belarusian League Player of the Year in This is Morris first collegiate coaching position.
