2 30 John Zamberlin Head Coach Pacific Lutheran, 1979 John Zamberlin will enter his second season at the helm of the Idaho State program, after an inaugural season that saw Idaho State improve a game in the standings, and by leaps and bounds on the field. This season he will also coach a position, manning the linebackers, a position he knows very well after an NFL career as a linebacker. Zamberlin was named the 24th head coach in Idaho State University s rich football history on December 15, 2006, coming to Idaho State with 10 years of head coaching experience, and a track record of winning games and graduating student-athletes. In 2007, the Bengals went 3-8, but the offense improved to the tune of 16 points despite starting a freshman quarterback, and the team had four Honorable Mention Sports Network All- Americans as well. Also in 2007, the Bengals became the first team in FCS history to have a fumble return, an interception return, a kickoff return, a punt return, a rush, and a pass play all go for 65 yards or longer, all for touchdowns, proving the big play was back in the Bengal arsenal Overall, Zamberlin has a career coaching record of 66-49, including a mark over the past six years. Prior to coming to Idaho State, he spent 10 years as the head coach at Central Washington, where they won back-to-back Great Northwest Athletic Conference titles in 2004 and 2005, and Zamberlin won GNAC Coach of the Year honors both of those years. All told, Zamberlin was named GNAC Coach of the Year in 1998, 2002, 2004, and In 2003, the Wildcats were p r e s e a s o n ranked #1, and that came on the heels of an incredible 2002 season. In 2002, Central Washington ended the season ranked #5 (DII Football.com & AFCA), going 11-0 in the regular season, including a win over Big Sky co-champion Montana State, on their way to the NCAA Division II playoffs. Zamberlin also handled all of the defensive special teams at Richmond, and assisted with the strength and conditioning program. Prior to Richmond, John got a taste of the Big Sky Conference as he served as the linebackers coach at Eastern Washington, working for both Dick Zornes and Mike Kramer. With the Eagles, John also oversaw all defensive special teams, and he coached and designed the kickoff coverage unit. With the Eagles, Zamberlin was a part of their 1992 NCAA I-AA playoff squad that won a share of the Big Sky Conference title. Zamberlin got his collegiate coaching start at the University of Massachusetts as a linebackers coach from , helping the Minutemen to a pair of Yankee Conference titles in 1988 and The Yankee Conference morphed into the Atlantic- 10 Conference, meaning his nine years of Division I coaching came in the two dominant leagues in the Football Championship Subdivision. In his c o l l e g i a t e coaching career, Zamber- lin has been a part of seven conference titles (four as a head coach), and he has been a part of three trips to the Division I FCS playoffs (formerly I-AA) and a trip to both the Division II and the NAIA playoffs. He also has won five coach of the year awards, including the 2002 Western Region Division II Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Pacific Lutheran University Hall of Fame in 1996, and his jersey was retired in 1985 after a stellar career as an All-America selection in Zamberlin played linebacker in the NFL for six seasons, playing 78 total games with the New England Patriots ( ) and the Kansas City Chiefs ( ). 7 Brandon Cherokee Valeria Cornerbacks Central Washington, 1999 Brandon Cherokee Valeria is entering his second season with Idaho State University, and he will again oversee the cornerbacks. Valeria joined the Bengals after spending two seasons on head coach John Zamberlin s staff at Central Washington, coaching the corners. Last season, ISU s corners might have been the leagues most improved unit. Corner D.J. Clark earned honorable mention All-Big Sky honors in leading ISU in interceptions for the third year in a row, this time with four, including two touchdowns. Despite losing one player early to a season ending injury, ISU s corners combined for half of the team s interceptions. While at Central, Valeria helped Brandon Kennedy earn preseason All-American honors in 2006 as a sophomore. In 2005, Central won the GNAC title, going 8-2 overall and undefeated in league play. Central s defense was ranked 11th nationally, picking up 33 takeaways. Of those 33 takeaways, 11, or 33% were directly attributed to cornerbacks, and 21 came for the whole secondary. Both of Valeria s corners earned First Team All-GNAC honors. Valeria has also coached in minor league professional football, in the high school ranks, and with the Everett Hawks of the National Indoor Football League. All of his stops have turned up success stories. He was named the 2004 Northwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year by Minor League Football News after helping the West Sound Saints to the NWFL title game. Valeria played at Central Washington for four years, from , where he helped led Central Washington to the 1995 NAIA National Championship, eventually being inducted in 2006 into the Central Washington Hall of Fame. The 33-year old Valeria ( ) has a son, Ayosgi Uwasa (which means Last Warrior in Cherokee) and a daughter T Kia Li (which means Message from God ). His primary recruiting area is Arizona and Las Vegas, and he originally hails from Hilo, Hawaii. Nick Whitworth Recruiting Coord & RB Idaho State, th Season - Idaho State Nick Whitworth begins his sixth season with the Idaho State coaching staff, and he is in charge of both ISU s running backs and he serves as recruiting coordinator. Nick also spent two seasons as a student assistant with the Bengals. In his four years as recruiting coordinator, Whitworth s recruiting classes have all been highly touted. Whitworth, a Mackay native, has proven to be able to get some of the top student-athletes in the west, and in Idaho in particular. Last season, Whitworth s protoge Josh Barnett broke the school s alltime rushing record with 3,412 yards, rushing for 1,022, making him the first running back in school history with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Barnett s 2,129 yards in back-to-back seasons broke Whitworth s own record of 2,039 yards. Last year, ISU rushers accounted for 1,483 yards and 11 of ISU s 12 rushing touchdowns. In 2006, Barnett earned First Team All-Big Sky honors after rushing for 1,117 yards, the thirdmost in school history. Overall, ISU s running backs rushed for 1,358 yards and 13 touchdowns, and that comes on the heels of the 2005 campaign that saw the group rush for 1,714 yards and 23 touchdowns, the best numbers in over 20 years from that position. Both Josh Barnett and Ken Cornist earned all-conference honors, and Cornist set a Bengal freshman record with 14 rushing scores as both rushed for over 780 yards. Handling the running backs probably comes second nature to Nick. Whitworth had a standout four-year career at Idaho State from , the last two years as the team s starting tailback. Whitworth rushed for 1,106 yards as a junior, the third most in school history. Included in that total was a school record 273 yards against Fort Lewis College, which broke the school record. That game came on the heels of the season opener when Whitworth raced for 221 yards against Eastern Oregon, making his 494 yards rushing in back-to-back games the most in school history. Nick and Erin The Mackay Missile as he was called, also ended his career on a resounding note, with a 201-yard game in a win over FBS Utah State in Logan. Whitworth is the only Bengal in school history with three 200-yard games to his credit, owning three of the eight 200-yard games in school history. On the ISU career charts, he currently ranks third all-time in rushing with 2,353 yards and seventh in all-purpose yards per game at 92.9, and 10th in kickoff return average at 21.2 yards per game. The 29-year old Whitworth ( ) is married to Erin Whitworth, and he earned his undergraduate degree from Idaho State in His primary recruiting area is Idaho, and he originally hails from Mackay, Idaho. 35
