FOR THE RECORD The Tritons come home with an overall record of 1-4 and a 1-2 mark in CCAA play following their comfortable 70-50 victory over Cal State East Bay on December 15.

Head coach Chris Carlson s squad will now play five of its next seven games at home, where they finished with a 9-2 record last season.

Sat Sun GAME NO. 6 UCSD ENTERTAINS SDCC IN FIRST HOME GAME OF UC SAN DIEGO TRITONS (1-4) vs. SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN HAWKS (1-7) Tuesday, December 22, :00 PM RIMAC Arena (5,000) La Jolla, CA, TRITON UPDATES FIRST THINGS FIRST After picking up its first win of the season last week at Cal State East Bay, the UC San Diego men s basketball team will make its home court debut when San Diego Christian College pays a visit to RIMAC Arena on Tuesday. The Tritons will square off with the Hawks at 1:00 p.m., looking to build on their 20-point victory over the Pioneers in their first home game of the season. UCSD will then hit the road once again, resuming California Collegiate Athletic Association play at Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills on January 2-3. FOR THE RECORD The Tritons come home with an overall record of 1-4 and a 1-2 mark in CCAA play following their comfortable victory over Cal State East Bay on December 15. The win snapped a four-game skid for UCSD, the Tritons longest since dropping five straight to conclude the regular season in Head coach Chris Carlson s squad will now play five of its next seven games at home, where they finished with a 9-2 record last season. DEFENSE SHINES IN WIN OVER CSUEB UCSD entered last week s matchup with Cal State East Bay allowing an average of over 68 points in their first four games of , but the Tritons turned in a tremendous effort on the defensive end, holding the Pioneers to just 50 points on their home floor. CSUEB scored just 20 points in the first half and had a total of just 34 after 35 minutes of play. The Tritons limited the Pioneers to 33.3% (19-57) shooting from the field, 26% (5-19) from the three-point arc, and just 35% (7-20) from the free throw line. Tuesday s performance marked the Tritons best defensive performance since they held the Academy of Art University to just 40 points on 25.5% shooting on December 20, OFFENSE FINDS ITS RHYTHM While the Tritons were exceptional on defense against Cal State East Bay, the offense wasn t too shabby either. UCSD finished with a season-best 70 points against the Pioneers, converting half (26-52) of their shots from the floor, which was also a high mark for the year. The Tritons previous high was 63 points in the overtime loss to Colorado State-Pueblo in the season-opener November 20 and the 50% shooting clip came after the team had failed to shoot better than 34% from the floor in its first four games. A total of three Tritons reached double figures for the first time in , as Tyler Acevedo scored a game-high 16 points, Christian Hatch finished with a career-best 14, and Jordan Lawley added 13. UCSD enters Tuesday s home matchup averaging 55.8 points per game. BOARD GAMES One of the areas UCSD has found success so far this season has been rebounding the basketball. After holding a decisive edge on the glass at Cal State East Bay last week, the Tritons have now outrebounded the opposition in four of their five games this season. The only exception came against Cal Poly Pomona on December 5, when the defending national finalists held a advantage. UCSD enters Tuesday s contest against San Diego Christian averaging 39.2 rebounds per game, a figure that currently ranks second in the CCAA. The Tritons have a total of 60 offensive rebounds so far this season, 14 more than the opposition. SCOUTING THE HAWKS San Diego Christian College enters Monday s matchup with Trinity Western with an overall record of 1-7. The Hawks picked up their first win of the season against Pacific Union College on Saturday, shooting 54% from the field -- including a blistering 65% in the second half -- en route to a triumph. Sophomore guard Jason Starr scored 15 points off the bench to lead four Hawks in double figures against PUC, hitting 6-of-8 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 from the three-point line. Jack Colston finished with 14 points, while Ahmed Abdelhamid and Tyler Mutton scored 11 apiece. For the season, SDCC is averaging 69.7 points per game, while allowing over 80 per night on the other end. Tuesday s contest will mark the first meeting between UCSD and San Diego Christian.

2 HEAD COACH CHRIS CARLSON Chris Carlson enters his third season as the head coach at UC San Diego in The 11th coach in program history, Carlson has guided the Tritons to two of their most successful seasons at the Division II level since taking over in Carlson made an immediate impact at UCSD, leading the Tritons to an overall record of in his first season, which was the school s best mark since the campaign. After finishing sixth in the ultra-competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association standings at 11-9, Carlson s Tritons caught fire in March, defeating Cal State San Bernardino, San Francisco State, and Cal Poly Pomona on the way to UCSD s first CCAA Tournament title. UCSD earned a No. 8 seed in its first NCAA Tournament appearance at the D-II level, falling to the University of Alaska-Anchorage, The Tritons were one of the top teams in the CCAA again last season, recording an overall record of and a 13-7 mark in league play. After earning a No. 4 seed in the CCAA Tournament, UCSD defeated No. 5 Humboldt State in the first round before falling to host Cal State San Bernardino in the semifinals. Carlson joined the Triton family after spending the previous four seasons as the Director of Basketball Operations at UCLA under head coach Ben Howland. As the DOB, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program and served as a liaison to the athletic administration and other school officials. Carlson also assisted in scheduling and recruiting and helped guide the Bruin program to back-to-back NCAA Final Four appearances in and Before assuming his duties at UCLA, Carlson served in the same capacity for two years at the University of Pittsburgh, joining the Panther staff in the summer of Prior to that, he was a member of Howland s staff at Northern Arizona in , where he coached a Lumberjack squad that led the country in both field goal percentage and three-point percentage for the first time in NCAA history. He remained on at NAU for two years after Howland s departure ( ), where he worked with NAU s post players and oversaw recruiting and scheduling. Prior to his stint at Northern Arizona, Carlson served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, UC Santa Barbara, from , where he oversaw development of the team s perimeter players. He also served as an assistant coach at nearby Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, Calif. from Carlson worked as a game management assistant at the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star game for 12 straight years from and has worked four NCAA Tournament West Regionals. In addition, he was an intern in the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams media relations department, a sports information assistant at UCSB in , and a member of the 1994 FIFA World Cup media relations staff. A San Diego native, Carlson is a 1993 graduate from UCSB, where he received his bachelors in History. Prior to his days as a Gaucho, Carlson attended Helix High School in La Mesa, Calif., where he earned All-League honors in basketball. He and his wife Karen have two sons, Nicklas and Charlie. NEWS AND NOTES ACEVEDO ANSWERS THE CALL Tyler Acevedo was in the starting lineup for the first time in his career against Cal State East Bay and he came through in a big way, finishing with 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists to lead the Tritons to the victory. He finished 5-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-5 from the three-point line, reaching double figures for the third time in five games this season. Acevedo enters Tuesday s contest with San Diego Christian College averaging a season-best 10.6 points and 3.2 rebounds in 23.4 minutes per game. He is shooting 33.3% from the behind the arc and leads the team with 10 threes on the season. Acevedo was also named UCSD s Athlete of the Week for his performance against the Pioneers. LAW MAN After averaging a team-high 13.9 points per game as a junior in , Jordan Lawley has picked up right where he left off, leading the team in scoring at 13.6 points through five games this season. The senior guard is also averaging 4.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game entering Tuesday s home opener. Lawley had one of his better all-around games of the season at Cal State East Bay last week, finishing with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and a steal in 37 minutes. The Lodi, Calif. native finished 6-of-14 from the floor and hit one of his four three-point tries. Lawley has led UCSD in scoring twice this season. FRONT AND CENTER Sophomore center Christian Hatch had his best game as a Triton in the win over the Pioneers, tallying 14 points and 11 rebounds to record his first career double-double. He hit 4-of-9 shots from the field and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line en route to a new career high. His 11 boards was also a personal best, eclipsing his previous mark of nine that came in the loss to Cal State San Bernardino on December 4. Hatch is currently fourth on the team in scoring at 6.8 points per game, while his 5.8 rebounds rank second. He is shooting a team-high 75% (12-16) at the foul line. 3 NEWS AND NOTES CONT. HOME COOKING UCSD has been very tough to beat at home recently. Since Chris Carlson took over as head coach before the season, the Tritons have gone 20-5 (.800) at RIMAC Arena. UCSD was 9-2 on its home floor last season, with the only losses coming to Cal State Dominguez Hills (63-51) and eventual national finalist Cal Poly Pomona (61-39). The Tritons are 4-0 in nonconference home games under Carlson, defeating Alaska Fairbanks (69-58), William Jewell (70-51), Wayne State (73-59), and Grand Canyon (62-52) during the campaign. Tuesday s contest will mark UCSD s first nonconference regular season game at RIMAC since January 29, TRITONS PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH IN CCAA COACHES POLL UCSD was selected to finish sixth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season standings, according to the league s preseason coaches poll that was released last month. The Tritons, who finished tied for fourth in the conference last season at 13-7, received 68 points, two behind fifth place Cal State L.A. Cal Poly Pomona was picked to win the CCAA regular season title, receiving six first place votes and a total of 115 points. Humboldt State collected 113 points and five first place votes to finish second, while Cal State San Bernardino was third after garnering 95 points and the remaining first place vote. Cal State Dominguez Hills was picked fourth after receiving 87 points and Cal State L.A. was fifth with 70.
