Virginia Tech's Special Assistant to the Coach, Dale Layer, was the head coach at Liberty from and was on Coach McKay's staff at Liberty and Colorado State. Liberty's win over the No. 5 seed Mississippi Stat was its first NCAA Tournament win in school history. The win over the Bulldogs was Ritchie McKay's first win in the NCAA Tournament as a head coach. Liberty's win over Mississippi State was the program's first win over a SEC school. This is head coach Ritchie McKay's second trip to the NCAA Tournament as a head coach, previously taking New Mexico in Liberty's 29 wins are the most in a single season in school history, passing the team (28 wins). Caleb Homesley's 30 points was the most points scored in an NCAA Tournament game in school history. It was also his career high. In Liberty's last two games against SEC schools (Alabama and Mississippi State) Homesley is averaging 26.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Liberty gives the ASUN Conference five NCAA Tournament wins since 2013 and eight total wins in conference history. McKay and his staff had one of the best in the country last year, as the Flames ranked 19th in Division I in scoring defense, allowing just 63.4 points per game. NATIONAL RANKING / TEAM 6. FLAMES MAKE HISTORY IN NON-CONFERENCE After one of the toughest non-conference schedules in school history, where the Flames scheduled five teams that played in the postseason last year, including three NCAA Tournament teams, Liberty tied the school record with 14 wins during its non-conference schedule. During the Flames' 14 wins, Liberty defeated a Pac-12 school for the first time in school history and also defeated a power 5 school in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history. MCKAY REACHES 100 WINS AT LIBERTY Liberty Head Coach Ritchie McKay became the second coach in school history to reach 100 career wins at Liberty when in six seasons at Liberty, McKay has a winning percentage of.601 and owns three of Liberty s five 20-win seasons in its DI era. McKay is 11 wins behind the most DI wins in school history. Jeff Meyer had 134 wins in nine DI seasons. BIG MAN RETURNS TO THE 'BURG Scottie James proved to be one of the best big men in the country averaging 13.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game last season. James shot 61.2 percent from the floor in which ranked 10th in the nation, and was the fifth highest field goal percentage in school history for a season. Last season, Scottie James and Cabbil were both named Big South All-Tournament. - The No. 2 seed has now won its last five appearances in the Championship Final, all of which have come against the No. 1 seed. - Liberty has claimed its fourth ever conference championship, having won the Big South Tournament in 1994, 2004 and Liberty's win over Lipscomb extended the Flames' school-record of 11 true road wins, the most in a single season. - The last two games Liberty has played on March 10, Liberty has punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament. Back in 2013, Liberty won the Big South Championship and the Flames defeated Lipscomb for the ASUN title on March 10. FLAMES LIBERTY TEAM NOTES PLAYER BIOS MCKAY'S JOURNEY BACK TO LIBERTY After spending two years as the head coach at Liberty from , Ritchie McKay left to be the associate head coach at Virginia, when Tony Bennett was named head coach. Considering himself an offensive coach throughout most of his coaching career, McKay earned what he called a master s degree in the Pack Line Defense." McKay was able to come back to Liberty when he was hired in April of 2015 and then implemented Virginia s defense in Lynchburg. McKay and the Bennett family are very close as McKay has considered Tony s father, Dick Bennett, a mentor throughout his entire life. LIBERTY'S ALL-CONFERENCE HONOREES After claiming a share of the ASUN regular season title, Liberty's Caleb Homesley and Scottie James earned ASUN First Team All-Conference honors. The Liberty duo are the first players to make a first team in a conference since Jesse Sanders earned First Team All-Big South honors in the season. They are also the first pair of Flames to earn first team honors in the same season since , when David Dees and Larry Blair made First Team All-Big South. SCOTTIE JAMES' JOURNEY TO LIBERTY In what Coach McKay calls A gift from up above, Scottie James journey to Liberty is quite unique. After starting his collegiate career at Bradley, James was looking to transfer. During that time, his mother was working at a school back in their hometown in Florida and the school shutdown. Looking to teach somewhere, she applied and accepted a teaching position at Liberty University. His mother reached out to McKay and former assistant coach, Kyle Getter, who is now at Virginia, explaining that her son is looking to transfer and she sent the coaching staff highlight tapes of James. Once granted his release, McKay reached out and brought him in for a visit and was able to get a commitment from the big man. MCGHEE - FRESHMAN SENSATION Despite not making the ASUN All-Freshman team, Liberty s freshman sensation, Darius McGhee, proved to be one of the best young players in the conference as he earned ASUN Newcomer of the Week four times, the most of any player this season. Despite being 5 9, the freshman is easy to spot on the court as he displays a 48 inch vertical. MCKAY RECOGNIZED IN POSTSEASON HONORS Liberty men's basketball head coach Ritchie McKay has been named a finalist for the 2019 Ben Jobe Award, Jim Phelan Award and the Hugh Durham Awards. The Ben Jobe award recognizes the top minority coach in Division I basketball. The Jim Phelan award recognizes the top coach in Division I basketball, while the Hugh Durham award recognizes the top mid-major coach in the country. POSTSEASON EXPERIENCE The Flames are prepping for their third straight postseason tournament, having participated in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) in the past two seasons. In 2016, Liberty made it to the CIT Quarterfinals, losing on the road to UMBC and last season the Flames made it to the semifinals where they eventually fell to UIC. 5 ONLY DIVISION I OFFERS Despite shining in a Liberty uniform, it was a tough road for a few of Liberty s key players as Lovell Cabbil Jr. and Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz were not sought after coming out of high school. Known for being able to recognize talent, Coach McKay was able to find diamonds in the rough as he was the only Division I head coach to offer Cabbil and Pacheco-Ortiz. The starting backcourt has now started 91 games together and has won 71 games during that span. SUCCESS ON THE ROAD Battle tested this year, the Flames have been tested on the road facing teams like Alabama, Georgetown, Kent State, UCLA and Vanderbilt. Liberty has responded with a school record 11 true road wins. Liberty s win over UCLA was the school s first win over a Pac-12 school. The Flames proved they could compete with anyone on their schedule as their biggest losing deficit during non-conference was 10 points (78-88) at Georgetown. Liberty was the ninth fastest team in the country to reach 10 road wins this season. THE MCDOWELL FAMILY Good genes are in the McDowell family as sophomore Keegan McDowell is one of two student-athletes competing at Liberty. Keegan s sister, Delaney, is on the track & field team at Liberty. Delaney has earned all-conference honors in both the Big South and now the ASUN. FUN IN THE SUN - FIRST YEAR IN THE ASUN On May 17, 2018, Liberty announced a new direction for its athletics department, as conference membership for 17 of its programs will move to the ASUN Conference. The Flames became the first team to win the ASUN Men s Basketball Championship in their debut tournament since the season. CREATING A WINNING CULTURE Ritchie McKay inherited a program that endured 84 losses in four previous seasons. After suffering 13 losses during his first 13 Division I games, McKay changed the culture at Liberty that has now posted three straight 20-win seasons, which has never been done before in school history. Throughout its history, Liberty has had eight 20-win seasons and McKay is responsible for four of those seasons. During its Division I era, McKay owns four of the six 20-win seasons. CAPTAIN CABBIL Lovell Cabbil Jr. was Ritchie McKay s first recruit he ever signed once he returned to Liberty in Cabbil had not received any Division I offers being told that he was too small to play Division I. Weighing in at just under 150 pounds, McKay saw something in Cabbil and offered him a scholarship. Four years later, Cabbil is now Liberty s most winningest player, leading the Flames to a school record 84 wins the past four seasons. THE PIERRE FAMILY It will be a family battle between Liberty and Mississippi State as Liberty's director of player development, Joe Pierre III has a twin brother, Josh Pierre who is the video coordinator at Mississippi State.
