Liberty High Point Radford Charleston Southern Campbell 71.7 OPPONENTS POINTS PER GAME KEMRITE REACHES 1,000 Kemrite looks to build off an exceptional redshirt junior campaign where he was named Second Team All-Big South as well as to the Big South All-Academic team. The redshirt senior became the 25th player in school history to score 1,000 career points as he reached the milestone on Jan. 6 against Kemrite Presbyterian. The native of Conroe, Texas who only had one Division I scholarship offer out of high school, is also the 21st player in Liberty s history to score 1,000 points while also grabbing 300 career rebounds. WITHIN KEMRITE S SIGHT ALL-TIME SCORING LIST 3 POINTS 19. Eric Gordon 1, Kyle Ohman 1, Cliff Webber 1, Mike Coleman 1, Ryan Kemrite 1,038 BEAST MODE ON THE GLASS Scottie James has been extremely effective rebounding the ball early this season as he ranks second in the Big South, averaging 9.0 rebounds per game. James 15 rebounds against Charleston Southern on Jan. 2 was the most by a Liberty player since JR Coronado grabbed 16 boards on Dec. 28, 2012 vs. Union College. James is the first Liberty to record three straight double-doubles since Andrew Smith did from Feb. 4 through Feb. 11 in JAN. 23 James PUTTING THE BIG SOUTH ON THE MAP The Flames win over Wake Forest was the Big South s first win over an ACC opponent since Dec. 7, 2014 when Radford beat Virginia Tech It was also first win over an ACC opponent for the first time since Nov. 25, 2008 at Virginia (86-82), during McKay's first stint at Liberty. ENDING STREAKS Liberty's win over Wake Forest was vital for the Flames' program as it snapped Liberty's losing streak of 22 straight DI non-conference road games with a win. Before the win over the Deacons, Liberty's last DI non-conference road win was over Western Carolina (63-62) on Dec. 31, It was also Liberty's first win over a Power 5 conference member since Liberty defeated Virginia on the road on Nov. 25, 2008 during McKay's first stint at Liberty. The Flames also set a school record five wins in the month of November during the school's DI era. The Flames win at Winthrop was the first for an LU team since Feb. 18, 2004 snapping a 13-game losing streak at the Winthrop Coliseum. CLUTCH AT THE FREE THROW LINE Liberty has stepped up when at the charity stripe, as they are ranked first in the country in free throw percentage, according to Kenpom. Not only was it special from Puerto Rico native, Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz but he also made somewhat of a homecoming, having played his last two seasons in high school in Richmond at Deep Run High School. McKay is coming off a season where he led Liberty to the postseason, making it to the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Before returning to Liberty, McKay helped the Cavaliers post a record, including back-to-back 30-win seasons in and Virginia advanced to the NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament three out of McKay s last four years with the program. Following an ACC Championship in 2014, the Cavaliers were the No. 1 seed in the East Region and advanced to the Sweet 16. The Cavaliers spent seven weeks ranked as the No. 2 team in the country in , finishing the year with a 30-4 overall record and a 16-2 mark in ACC play. Virginia advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Final Four team Michigan State. Prior to his days in Charlottesville, McKay served two seasons as Liberty s men s basketball coach, posting a overall record and a mark in Big South play. He was named the seventh head coach in program history on March 26, Following a record during his first year at Liberty, McKay led the Flames to a record in The win total matched the program s NCAA Division I record for most wins in a season (Liberty finished the season with a 23-9 overall record). Liberty finished the season third in the Big South standings, the Flames third double-digit win total in league play in the last 10 seasons (Liberty was 10-8 in and 13-5 in ). The Flames were invited to play in the inaugural CollegInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), advancing to the second round following a win over Rider. Under McKay s leadership, forward Anthony Smith ( ) finished his career ranked sixth in program history with 1,754 career points scored. Smith was named All-Big South first team in 2009, one of two first-team all-conference student-athletes coached by McKay (Alex McLean in 2008). McKay brought Seth Curry to Liberty and the rookie made an immediate impact on the program. He finished the year averaging 20.2 points per game and was named 2009 Big South Freshman of the Year (second player in program history to receive the honor). Curry spotlighted McKay s Top 50 recruiting class in 2008, which was ranked No. 48 in the country by Basketball Times. McKay has compiled a career coaching record in 13 seasons as a head coach. McKay has the winningest career coaching record in program history with a.582 winning percentage. Prior to his first stint as head coach at Liberty, McKay served as head coach at Portland State ( ), Colorado State ( ), Oregon State ( ) and New Mexico ( ). Overall at New Mexico, McKay sported an coaching record over five seasons. He finished the 2005 campaign with a 26-7 record, winning the Mountain West Conference championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. McKay posted a record at Colorado State, which included a 1999 National Invitational Tournament (NIT) berth. The Rams defeated Mississippi State and in-state rival Colorado at the event, before losing to eventual NIT Tournament champion California in the quarterfinals. The season featured the first year of play for CSU in the Mountain West, and the Rams logged an record and a fourthplace conference finish. A pair of victories over nationally ranked opponents, the first time the program had accomplished the feat at Colorado State in a decade, and capturing the title at the second annual Pearl Harbor Classic in Hawaii were some of the highlights during the season. College Hoops Insider magazine noticed the success of the 2000 Rams and tabbed McKay as its MWC Coach of the Year. Before arriving on the Colorado State campus, McKay began his head coaching career when he was named the head coach at Portland State. McKay started at Portland State in 1995, helping revive a program which had been dormant for 15 years. McKay led the program to nine victories in the school s first season of competition ( ) since the early 1980s. After the initial season at Portland State, McKay was named one of six finalists for the Clair Bee Award, given annually to the coach with the most influence and innovation in the game of basketball. Two other finalists for the honor that year were Dean Smith of North Carolina and Mike Krzyzewski of Duke. The Portland State team followed with a mark and a third-place finish in the Big Sky Conference. McKay started his basketball coaching career in 1988 as a graduate assistant at the University of Washington. After his start with the Huskies, he spent time as an assistant at Queens College in North Carolina ( ), Seattle Pacific ( ), and Bradley ( ) before returning back to Washington ( ). McKay also served as an assistant under Jim Molinari at the 1997 World University Games in Italy, where the USA captured the gold medal.
