McKay and his staff had one of the best in the country as the Flames ranked 19th in Division I in scoring defense, allowing just 63.4 points per last year. NATIONAL RANKING / TEAM 9. On Feb. 7 at Charleston Southern, Kemrite broke Larry Blair s school record of 7 career three-pointers. At the conclusion of the regular season, Kemrite has made 43 career three-pointers. Currently, the team captain is tied with the school record for best three-point field goal percentage in a season at 44 percent tied with Matt Hildebrand in WITHIN KEMRITE S SIGHT ALL-TIME SCORING LIST 3 POINTS 14. John Caleb Sanders 1, Julius Nwosu 1, Jesse Sanders 1, Greg McCauley 1,8 18. Ryan Kemrite 1,184 BEAST MODE ON THE GLASS James proved to be one of the best big men in the league averaging 13.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. ENDING STREAKS Throughout the season the Flames have ended a number of bad losing streaks throughout the season both during conference and non-conference play. - The Flames win over Wake Forest was the Big South s first win over an ACC opponent since Dec. 7, 014 when Radford beat Virginia Tech It was also Liberty's first win over an ACC opponent since Nov. 5, 008 at Virginia (86-8), during McKay's first stint at Liberty. - Liberty's win over Wake Forest was vital for the Flames' program as it snapped Liberty's losing streak of straight DI non-conference road games with a win. Before the win over the Deacons, Liberty's last DI non-conference road win was over Western Carolina (63-6) on Dec. 31, It was also Liberty's first win over a Power 5 conference member since Liberty defeated Virginia on the road on Nov. 5, 008 during McKay's first stint at Liberty. The Flames also set a school record with five wins in the month of November during the school's DI era. - Liberty snapped a 13-game losing skid on Jan. 9 at the Winthrop Coliseum winning for the first time since Feb. 18, 004 (74-6). - Liberty snapped a 13-game losing skid against UNC Asheville on Feb. 15 with a thrilling 8-69 win in overtime. Pacheco-Ortiz's free throw percentage is currently the third highest ever by an individual in school history in a season. Record is held by Matt Hildebrand (9.6 percent). MAKING SCHOOL HISTORY Liberty set new records within the school s history as the Flames became the first team to post 0-plus wins in back-to-back seasons. Currently with back-to-back 1-win seasons, the Flames have set the school record for most wins (4) in a two-year span during its DI era matching breaking the school record when Liberty went 17-1 in 1996 and 3-9 in For the first time since 1997, Liberty will post back-to-back winning seasons. CHALLENGING NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE Liberty faced some quality opponents during its non-conference slate that proved to be some of the best teams in the country. It seemed as if the last possession of the game would determine the outcome and that proved to be the case as Radford's Carlik Jones hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to defeat the Flames, Neither team had a double-digit lead. The contest saw six different lead changes, plus it was tied five times. Liberty had the ball with 49 seconds left with the score tied 5-5 and Lovell Cabbil was able to get off a three-pointer with 3 seconds left, but Radford collected the rebound off the miss, setting up Jones' game-winner. Liberty's Cabbil and Scottie James were named to the Big South All-Tournament Team. 018 BIG SOUTH MEN S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Tuesday, Feb. 7 Thursday, March 1 Friday, March Sunday, March 4 First Round Quarterfinals Semifinals Championship Campus Sites - Higher Seeds at No. 1 seed at No. 1 seed at Highest Remaining Seed #7 High Point 7:00pm #10 Longwood #8 Charleston Southern 7:00pm #9 Presbyterian # Radford 1:00pm #10 Longwood (W, 68-55) #3 Winthrop 3:00pm #6 Gardner-Webb #1 UNC Asheville 7:00pm #8 Charleston So. 5 FLAMES LIBERTY TEAM NOTES PLAYER BIOS OUR PG FROM PUERTO RICO It has been a roller coaster of a summer for sophomore point guard Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz starting the summer in Egypt playing for Puerto Rico in the FIBA U19 World Cup. Pacheco-Ortiz and Puerto Rico played in seven games and finished in ninth place with a 3-4 record. For the tournament, Pacheco-Ortiz averaged 10.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and a team-leading 3.6 assists leading Puerto Rico to a ninth place finish, Pacheco-Ortiz ending the tournament with three straight wins. Throughout the course of the nine day event, Pacheco-Ortiz faced some of the top competition in the world, playing a handful of players that play for programs like FC Bayern Munich. In addition, Pacheco-Ortiz faced five players playing Division I basketball from schools like Kentucky, Miami and Gonzaga. ASSIST FOR PUERTO RICO College Insider s Angela Lento has started the Assist For Puerto Rico campaign where she is donating 5 dollars to Water Mission for every assist Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz and Liberty makes during Big South and tournament play. The money will go towards building safe water solutions in Puerto Rico. Lento has raised $7,05 as Liberty has recorded 81 assists. GIVING BACK TO PUERTO RICO The Flames basketball program and Liberty University continue to give back to the victims affected by the Hurricane Irma and Maria as they participated in a Hurricane Relief Exhibition at VCU. The Flames pulled out the victory but, more importantly, money was raised to help the hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. The proceeds generated from the contest will go to benefit the hurricane relief charity chosen by each school. Not only was it special from Puerto Rico native, Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz but he also made somewhat of a homecoming, having played his last two seasons in high school in Richmond at Deep Run High School. PARADISE IN LYNCHBURG An exciting three days of college basketball wrapped up from Nov at the Vines Center. Liberty University and the Paradise Jam raised $15,154 throughout the three-day tournament that will be donated to the hurricane relief efforts in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition to the $15,154 raised, 59 items were also donated that will go back to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Hoisting the 017 Paradise Jam championship was Colorado with a victory over Mercer. Colorado's McKinley Wright IV was named MVP of the tournament. CRASH THE GLASS Liberty's new depth in the froncourt has been on display this year in the rebounding department as it ranks fourth as the NCAA's most improved rebounding team with a +5. difference this season. RANK/SCHOOL MARGIN 1. Duke T. Northern Iowa T. Northern Iowa Liberty UNLV EVERY STEP OF THE WAY: THE MCKAY-SOUCIE CONNECTION The bond began officially in 1995 and they have never left each other s side. Ritchie McKay has always had associate coach Brad Soucie by his side since their days at Portland State. They started in the Pacific Northwest and have moved together across the country. They have made pit stops at Colorado State, Oregon State and New Mexico. The duo first came to Liberty from where they had a record of 39-8 before leaving for Virginia where they spent six years together under Tony Bennett. McKay and Soucie then came back to Liberty. COACH MCKAY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE BEST Ritchie McKay proved to be one of the best coaches in America last season as he was nominated for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year and also the Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year. The Ben Jobe award is presented annually to the top minority coach in Division I men's basketball. The Skip Prosser Man of the Year recognizes coaches that achieve success at a high level on the basketball court but also display high moral integrity off the court as well. In a season where Liberty faced nine teams with at least 0 wins, Liberty posted a 0-win season for the first time since the season, during McKay's first stint at Liberty. McKay's squad raised its level of play during conference play as they won a school record its first seven road games in the Big South. Finishing in a tie for second place in the Big South this year, the Flames had its highest finish in the Big South standings since the season when Liberty placed second. WELCOME TO THE PROS Liberty men s basketball program had two seniors last season in Ray Chen and John Dawson and both are currently playing professional basketball. In August, Chen was selected No. 1 overall in the Chinese Basketball Association Draft and Dawson was recently signed by the Greensboro Swarm in the NBA G League. Chen participated in the William Jones Cup in Taiwan where he was the tournament's leading scorer with 0.38 points per game. During the NBA s preseason, Chen and the Gaungzhou Long-Lions traveled to the United States to play the Washington Wizards. Dawson is on an exceptional NBA G League squad that consists of players from the ACC, BIG EAST, Big 10 and the SEC. Dawson is now the eight player that McKay has coached at Liberty that has been able to play professionally joining TJ Banister (Overseas), Ray Chen (Overseas), Seth Curry (Dallas Mavericks), B.J. During his two years since returning to Liberty, McKay has compiled 34 wins, a.667 winning percentage in the Big South and was the Big South Coach of the Year. After the team s 0-win season in , McKay was a Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year finalist and a Skip Prosser Man of the Year nominee. McKay is coming off a season where he led Liberty to the postseason, making it to the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Before returning to Liberty, McKay helped the Cavaliers post a record, including back-to-back 30-win seasons in and Virginia advanced to the NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament three out of McKay s last four years with the program. Following an ACC Championship in 014, the Cavaliers were the No. 1 seed in the East Region and advanced to the Sweet 16. The Cavaliers spent seven weeks ranked as the No. team in the country in , finishing the year with a 30-4 overall record and a 16- mark in ACC play. Virginia advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Final Four team Michigan State. Prior to his days in Charlottesville, McKay served two seasons as Liberty s men s basketball coach, posting a 39-8 overall record and a mark in Big South play. He was named the seventh head coach in program history on March 6, 007. Following a record during his first year at Liberty, McKay led the Flames to a 3-1 record in The win total matched the program s NCAA Division I record for most wins in a season (Liberty finished the season with a 3-9 overall record). Liberty finished the season third in the Big South standings, the Flames third double-digit win total in league play in the last 10 seasons (Liberty was 10-8 in and 13-5 in ). The Flames were invited to play in the inaugural CollegInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), advancing to the second round following a win over Rider. He finished the year averaging 0. points per game and was named 009 Big South Freshman of the Year (second player in program history to receive the honor). Curry spotlighted McKay s Top 50 recruiting class in 008, which was ranked No. 48 in the country by Basketball Times. McKay has compiled a career coaching record in 13 seasons as a head coach. McKay has the winningest career coaching record in program history with a.58 winning percentage. Prior to his first stint as head coach at Liberty, McKay served as head coach at Portland State ( ), Colorado State ( ), Oregon State (000-0) and New Mexico (00-07). Overall at New Mexico, McKay sported an 8-69 coaching record over five seasons. He finished the 005 campaign with a 6-7 record, winning the Mountain West Conference championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. McKay posted a 37-3 record at Colorado State, which included a 1999 National Invitational Tournament (NIT) berth. The Rams defeated Mississippi State and in-state rival Colorado at the event, before losing to eventual NIT Tournament champion California in the quarterfinals. The season featured the first year of play for CSU in the Mountain West, and the Rams logged an 18-1 record and a fourthplace conference finish. A pair of victories over nationally ranked opponents, the first time the program had accomplished the feat at Colorado State in a decade, and capturing the title at the second annual Pearl Harbor Classic in Hawaii were some of the highlights during the season. College Hoops Insider magazine noticed the success of the 000 Rams and tabbed McKay as its MWC Coach of the Year. Before arriving on the Colorado State campus, McKay began his head coaching career when he was named the head coach at Portland State. McKay started at Portland State in 1995, helping revive a program which had been dormant for 15 years. McKay led the program to nine victories in the school s first season of competition ( ) since the early 1980s. After the initial season at Portland State, McKay was named one of six finalists for the Clair Bee Award, given annually to the coach with the most influence and innovation in the game of basketball. Two other finalists for the honor that year were Dean Smith of North Carolina and Mike Krzyzewski of Duke. The Portland State team followed with a 15-1 mark and a third-place finish in the Big Sky Conference.
