This will be the 45th season of men s basketball at Liberty. Friday s game will be the second contest in a Vines Center doubleheader, as the Liberty women s basketball team hosts Duke at 6 p.m. This will be the fourth year in a row that Liberty has opened its men s basketball schedule at home. The average attendance for the last three season openers has been 5,478, and the Flames have won all three contests. Matchup Notes - These two programs, Liberty and Cairn, met under entirely different circumstances in their only previous meeting. Cairn, then known as Philadelphia College of Bible, defeated Lynchburg Baptist College, 86-79, on March 10, 1973 in the NCCAA District II Tournament. That game brought Liberty s first-ever season of men s basketball to a close. - Liberty is all-time in season openers, including 21-5 when its season opener is at home. At 52-47, he will have the second-best record of any Liberty head men s basketball coach through his first 100 games. This year the squad is much more experienced with most of last year s major contributors returning for another season in the Hill City Returning Games Started % % of points returning 74.7% 12% % of rebounds returning 67% 12.6% % of assists returning 69.5% New Faces The Flames will have five freshmen and transfer senior Ray Chen as additions to this year s roster. Additionally, head coach Ritchie McKay added a new assistant coach to the fold over the summer. Vic Sfera joins the Flames coaching staff after serving on the technical staff for the U16 Romanian national team. He spent the season at UVA as director of scouting/recruiting. Prior to that, Sfera served as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona during the and campaigns. He also has experience at Memphis and NAIA power Biola. Family Ties Family connections run deep at Liberty for this year s men s basketball roster. Redshirt sophomore Ezra Talbert and freshman Josiah Talbert are the first pair of brothers to compete for the Flames in men s basketball at the same time since Jesse Sanders and John Caleb Sanders during the season. The Sanders brothers finished were the third-highest scoring brother duo in Big South history, combining to score 2,619 career points. Sophomore Zach Farquhar s father, Steve Farquhar, was a four-year letterwinner in men s basketball from , which includes Liberty s first season as a Division I team. Brock Gardner joins the Flames after being a three-star recruit from Chandler, Ariz. Gardner s older sister, Macey, is currently in her first season as an assistant coach on the Liberty volleyball coaching staff. Macey Gardner was a three-time Pac-12 All-Conference selection while playing at Arizona State, finishing as the Sun Devils all-time leader in kills. World Travelers For the first time in five years the Flames embarked on an offseason journey outside America s borders. Coach McKay s squad spent five days in Costa Rica, playing three exhibition games against international competition and taking part in community service. On Aug. 9, the Flames squared off against Canadian competition, the University of Ottawa. The Flames started out slow, falling behind 17-2 to open the game and then trailed at the halftime break. Liberty fought back in the second half but could never fully recover. Liberty fell to the Gee-Gees Myo Baxter-Bell led all Liberty scorers with 12 points while Caleb Homesley and John Dawson each scored 10 points. On day two, Liberty spent the morning visiting the Holy Spirit Orphanage. The team stopped by the church first to learn about the mission of the orphanage which is to provide a home and education for children who come from broken homes and dangerous living situations. After eating lunch with the students, the team offered them some basketball tips while the children showed off their soccer skills for the Flames. The players also had a blast playing games with the children on the playground. Prior to departing for the day, the children told the players that they did not want them to leave. That night Liberty took down the Costa Rican National Team Lovell Cabil paced the Flames with 11 points including a 3-for-4 night from downtown. Brock Gardner tallied eight points while Caleb Homesley recorded 10 rebounds. In the third and final exhibition game of the trip, Homesley starred for the Flames as they topped Brock University (Ontario, Canada) The sophomore racked up 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting. He also recorded six rebounds. Brock Gardner scored 11 points to go along with three steals. Baxter-Bell gave the Flames ten points on the night. As a team Liberty was red-hot from the field, shooting at a 47.5 percent clip.
