Hosts Cal State Bakersfield- Sept. 28th - 7 PM 2007 Record: Last Time Faced: First Meeting Series: N/A Notes for Week of 9-19: Rebels Welcome in CSU Bakersfield for Final Non-Conference Match of the Season The Rebels continue their longest homestand since 1996, when they close out their non-conference schedule Friday at 7:30 with a tussle against Cal State Bakersfield. After Friday, the Rebels dive into conference play the following weekend with matches against Air Force and Denver. CSUB is in its reclassifying status with Division-1, after being D- II since its inception. The Roadrunners are their first transition year, the second year of the five-season process. * Lamar Neagle Named to College Soccer News National Team of the Week UNLV s Lamar Neagle picked up his second national weekly honor of his career on Monday, as he was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week for the week ending Sept. 23. Neagle earned the honor after being involved in all three of UNLV s goals over the past weekend, as the Rebels earned a win and a tie in the UNLV Rebel Classic. Against regionally ranked Drake on Sept. 21, the Rebels were trailing by two with nine minutes to play, but Neagle scored twice in an eight-minute span, including one with 45 seconds left in the game, to tie the score and send it into overtime. He followed that up on Sept. 22 by setting up the game-winning score, when he dribbled through three defenders before passing off to Daniel Cruz who scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Missouri State MPSF Standings (as of Sept. 26) Conference Overall Team W L T Pts. 2 Page 2: UNLV MS HEAD COACH MARIO SANCHEZ Mario Sanchez enters his second season as the head mentor of the UNLV men s soccer team. Sanchez was named the fourth men s soccer head coach in UNLV history in January of Sanchez came to Las Vegas from Akron, where he was an assistant coach for the men s soccer program for the past three years. While on the Zips staff, he helped guide them to three NCAA appearances, including an appearance in the Elite Eight in the 2005 NCAA Tournament, where they tied eventual national champion Maryland, which advanced in a penalty kick shootout. The Zips finished the 2005 season with an record and were ranked No. 1 in the nation for four straight weeks. I am extremely happy to be a part of the UNLV athletic department, I can definitely feel the excitement here for the direction that Mike has the entire department going, said Sanchez. I am looking forward to bringing success to the men s soccer program here. Last year was not Sanchez s first exposure to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, as he was an assistant coach at Fresno State from until the school dropped the men s soccer program. While in Fresno, he was also a staff coach for the Olympic Development Program Region IV from , and was an ODP coach for the Ohio North ODP program from November of 2003 until leaving for Las Vegas. Last summer, Sanchez was also named as head coach for the West Region 90s Boys Age Group team, and has coached them in international competition in A 1999 graduate of Fresno State with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, Sanchez was a four-year starter and two-time captain for the Bulldogs. Playing from , Sanchez earned all-far West Region honors in 1995 and He played for the national champion Central Coast Roadrunners in the United Soccer League from , and was a third-round draft choice in the MLS by the Kansas City Wizards in Sanchez also played for Orange County Zodiac (1999) and Stanislaus Cruisers (2001) in the USL Professional Division. Sanchez is married to the former Shana Stickel. They have two children, son Sebastian (3) and daughter Ella (2). Rebels End Non-Conference Slate Friday * Rebels Continue Hot Play in UNLV Rebel Classic UNLV, which is off to its best start since 2002, tied Drake 2-2 on Friday evening in a game that was delayed 40 minutes due to heavy rain and lightning. Drake scored the first two goals, but Lamar Neagle struck in the 81st and 89th minute to knot the score at two. Danny Cruz assisted on both goals, while Andrew Friel also was credited with a helper on the second tally. Against Missouri State, Neagle repaid Cruz for his good deeds the game before, assisting Cruz on the lone goal of the match. Calvin Bailey notched his second career clean sheet, making three stops. * Rebels Split Games in the 2007 UNLV adidas Invitational The Rebels, home for the first time in 2007, made the most of their home opener with a 4-3 win over regionally-ranked Cal Poly. UNLV grabbed three goals from freshmen, two from Stephen Sifuntes and one spectacular goal from Daniel Cruz. Ben Haugland scored the other goal for the Rebels, as Calvin Bailey stopped three shots in getting the win. On Sept. 16 though, the Rebels offense wasn t as potent as Cal State Northridge came away with a 1-0 victory. The Rebs had chances to score, but none came to fruition. Bailey finished the game with five stops on the afternoon. * Scouting the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners The Roadrunners, who are still in the Division-1 reclassifying stages, come to Las Vegas to take on UNLV for the first time in school history. CSUB is currently 2-5-3, most recently falling to San Jose State 2-0. The Runners are led by goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski, who ranks Rebel Notables * Seven Rebel newcomers have already started at least one game. * The Rebels scored four goals in their 4-3 win, the most they have notched in a match since Oct. 27, 2002 against Air Force (W, 6-0). * Lamer Neagle is currently tied for the conference lead with four scores on the season. * Danny Cruz tops the MPSF s list for points per game, averaging a point and a half per outing. * The 2007 version of the Rebels have four foreign born players, all coming from Europe (Paris, France; Mothewell, Scotland; Glasgow, Scotland; London, England) * Creighton transfer Andrew Friel was a part of the 2005 squad that made it to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. * The Rebels have taken no penalties this season, with Alex Hernandez taking their last PK on Oct. 26, 2003 against Sacramento State. * UNLV has scored 11 times this season, yet only four players have posted goals (Neagle 4, Cruz 3, Haugland 2, Sifuentes 2). * Eight of UNLV s 11 scores on the season have come in the second half. Their foes are more balanced, scoring seven goals in each half. * Seven players on the current UNLV roster come to Las Vegas from different colleges. * The Rebel s winning percentage is.500, the best through eight games since 2002, when they started 5-3 (.625) and finished 12-8 (4-2). * Last season, the Rebels had eight players with at least one point. Through eight games in 2007, they have already equalled that number. * Neagle scored twice in ten minutes, in helping the Rebels to a 2-2 tie against Drake. It was Neagle s first two-score game of his career, and second time this season a Rebel scored twice in a game (Sifuentes vs. Cal Poly, Sept. 14)

3 Sept. 28 vs. Cal State Bakersfield fifth in the country in saves per game with On the offensive side of the pitch, Towa Manda is the go-to guy for CSUB. Manda has scored four times this season, the only Roadrunner with more than one goal. Javier Barba, Robbie Gouk and Mike Esparza all have a tally and an assist on the year. * MPSF Releases Preseason Poll; Rebels Picked Fifth UNLV men s soccer was picked to finish fifth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation s preseason poll in a vote of the league s six head coaches. League head coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. The Rebels, who are entering their second season under head coach Mario Sanchez, received a total of 10 points in the poll. New Mexico received five first-place votes and 25 points overall to earn the top spot, followed by Denver (one first-place vote, 21 points), San Jose State (15 points), Sacramento State (12 points) the Rebels and then Air Force (seven points). * Cruz, US Team Play in u-17 World Cup Current freshman Daniel Cruz and his teammates on the U-17 USA World Cup team recently finished play in the 2007 U-17 World Cup, a tournament that spaned from Aug.18-Sept. 9 across eight different venues in South Korea. The US team was 1-3, rallying to make the medal round after defeating Belgium 2-0. In the first match of the elimanation round, the US fell to Germany 2-1, ending their medal hopes. Cruz saw action in two games, finding the field in a 3-1 loss to Tunisia and in a loss to Germany.
